U.S. Rep. Julia Carson died at home this morning following a battle with lung cancer. She was 69.

Carson's death comes just weeks after she announced the cancer, which she had beaten before, was back with "terminal vengeance."

Two days later, she said she would not seek re-election to a seventh term in 2008, saying her time away from Congress would be "a time to weep and a time to laugh," and she added, "a time to heal."

The governor of Indiana is a Republican; Rep. Carson was a Democrat.

"What we have done for ourselves alone dies with us; what we have done for others and the world remains and is immortal."

Rep. Julia Carson was an advocate for children, women's rights, and the homeless. She represented those who had no voice or powerful lobbyist firms to take up their cause. Prior to the invasion of Iraq, she was an outspoken detractor who saw through the rhetoric to call the invasion by its rightful definition: an act of aggression by the US to protect its oil interests.

My deepest condolences go out to her family, friends and her constituents. She truly did represent, with integrity and honor, the people of the United States.

This is sad. 69 is young and it's a shame she lost her battle with cancer.

She had a good life and she served our nation with honor. She'll be missed.

Rest in peace.
