The full scale of the chaos left behind by British forces in Basra was revealed yesterday as the city's police chief described a province in the grip of well-armed militias strong enough to overpower security forces and brutal enough to behead women considered not sufficiently Islamic.

As British forces finally handed over security in Basra province, marking the end of 4½ years of control in southern Iraq, Major General Jalil Khalaf, the new police commander, said the occupation had left him with a situation close to mayhem. "They left me militia, they left me gangsters, and they left me all the troubles in the world," he said in an in an interview for Guardian Films and ITV.

Khalaf painted a very different picture from that of British officials who, while acknowledging problems in southern Iraq, said yesterday's handover at Basra airbase was timely and appropriate.

"Southern Iraq "Close To Mayhem"

When one of George Bush's assistants read this title to him, as we all know George can't read anything beyond the level of 'My Pet Goat', he ponders the words very carefully and proclaims.

" Iraq is clearly a Utopian Free Democracy "

I was thinking to myself just last week about my two young girls. I was thinking that they were very fortunate to be born at a time when women are breaking down barriers, that they would be afforded more opportunities than other women throughout history. "What a wonderful time to be born female!" I thought.

Knowing that we have created a most horrifically opposite scenario for the women of Iraq brings tears to my eyes.

A trip down memory lane to 2003:

Feb. 7, Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld, to U.S. troops in Aviano, Italy: "It is unknowable how long that conflict will last. It could last six days, six weeks. I doubt six months."

March 4, Air Force Gen. Richard Myers, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, at a breakfast with reporters: "What you'd like to do is have it be a short, short conflict. . . . Iraq is much weaker than they were back in the '90s," when its forces were routed from Kuwait

March 11, Deputy Defense Secretary Paul Wolfowitz, in a speech to the Veterans of Foreign Wars: "The Iraqi people understand what this crisis is about. Like the people of France in the 1940s, they view us as their hoped-for liberator

March 16, Vice President Cheney, on NBC's Meet the Press: "I think things have gotten so bad inside Iraq, from the standpoint of the Iraqi people, my belief is we will, in fact, be greeted as liberators. . . . I think it will go relatively quickly, . . . (in) weeks rather than months." He predicted that regular Iraqi soldiers would not "put up such a struggle" and that even "significant elements of the Republican Guard . . . are likely to step aside."

Of course let's not forget the famous
MISSION ACCOMPLISHED sign.

As far as I'm concerned the bravest and best fighting force in the world has done everything asked of it. It is time to declare VICTORY and bring them home. Give Iraq back to the Iraquis

From the Grammar Police. This is just a warning.

"Mayhem" is the crime of maiming someone, analogous to murder being the crime of killing someone.

Certainly there is plenty of mayhem in Iraq -- sadly, this is hardly news.

When people say "mayhem", they usually mean "a chaotic free-for-all", or "Bedlam".

"Bedlam" is an abbreviated name for "St. Mary of Bethlehem" also known as "Bethlem Hospital". This was the earliest hospital to accept "lunatics". "It was like an insane asylum" carries the same meaning.

See en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bethlem_Royal_Hospital

yeah... no one saw this coming!

no shock here -- at all!

I've only seen one web site that mentions Iraq daily -- spindrain.com

it is criminal that news outlet ignore the chaos still rampant in Iraq -- where our men and women toil daily

Hey all the Repubs are claiming victory, the surge is working, it's going well, were winning? Don't mind those IED'S going off and bodies all over, we don't count them in our body count unless they are shot between the eyes.
I cannot believe how sick the Republican party has become. Obsessed with winning, what exactly I don't know, a blown to hell country with few people left except the poor who cannot flee. Our national debt in the trillions, all of the soldiers killed and maimed and yet by God were staying because the rest of us morons just don't understand how we must be in charge, of Iraq, Iran, Syria the entire middle east. I guess the GOPERS want to own the Middle East for generations to come. Hopefully, they will be just as willing to send their kids over so the body count can continue.
They claim religious morality, that Democrats and anyone else are traitors, or don't support the troops? I suppose by supporting the troops they mean, keep sending them in to get blown up or maimed and then when they come back slap a medal on them and the VA will of course lose their paperwork, not treat them properly and basically ignore their mental health problems.
If you Republicans believe that George Bush the almighty is the second coming, Might I suggest that you and George and Cheney pack up and move over to Iraq, that way you can keep tabs on your oil and the "terriorist". The rest of America will simply try and rebuild our country, what's left of it.

Its a Quagmire!... Media Reports 6 Bogus Stories in 6 Weeks!

1. On Monday October 29, 2007... The Multi-National Force Iraq turned over Karbala Province to the Iraqis.
This was supposed to be good news, right?
It wasn't.

The good news was drowned out by media reports that 20 headless bodies were found in Diyala Province

2. On November 29, 2007... It happened again.
The Western media including the Reporters Without Borders organization reported:

11 close family members of Jordanian-based Baathist reporter Dia al-Kawwaz, who runs the online anti-Iraq newspaper Shabeqat Akhbar al-Iraq, were slaughtered in Baghdad. The attack occurred in the Al-Shaab neighborhood shortly after 7 a.m. Shia militia men shot dead two of Kawwaz"s sisters, their husbands and their seven children, aged 5 to 10. They then exploded the house on their way out.
This made headlines around the world.
This was a lie, too.

3. On Thursday November 29, 2007... The mainstream media reported that 12-25 "construction workers" were killed in a Bombing by NATO forces in Afghanistan this time.
The so-called construction workers ended up being Taliban fighters after all

I feel pretty safe in saying that this won't be appearing on any of the major news programs here. It's too much in conflict with the Bush propaganda machine.

Why there's as much mayhem and beheadings at an eagles game in Philly, even more at the Italian Market.

Baghdad and much of Iraq will go the way of Basra. American forces cannot remain forever and the fractionalized weak Iraq government will not sustain. Why is it taking us so long and the loss of many lives to realize that Iraq will not move forward as this administration predicted but backward to its cultural roots. What is going on in Basra is no different than Baghdad and we only see and hear what this administration and its loyal military wants us to. The city of Baghdad is more like a prison camp..heavily secured by Iraq, US military and civilian forces in order to maintain stability and project a picture of normalsy. It doesn't take much to realize that if it takes all this military might just to help this city survive..it will tumble and fall without it. The British lost almost 200 soldiers in Basra since the War began and that city is worse off today in every way and will soon fall under the control of militia or Shia and never see democracy. A waste of British lives that the British Military will never admit. In fact this War and loss of many lives will never justify our own involvement and the massive amount of instability we have caused in that part of the world. The future of Iraq remains questionable but one thing is certain.. it will never see any form of democracy..we made sure of that!!

Since the MSM reported as many bombings, beheadings, mass killings, rumors and propaganda from Iraq BEFORE the SURGE and HuffPo Whiners touted that as proof of failure. Is the non-reporting of such 'chaos' in the South proof of British success? Or has the MSM been 'fooled' by the President and his Administration again?
