Gov. Jon S. Corzine signed into law Monday a measure that abolishes the death penalty, making New Jersey the first state in more than four decades to reject capital punishment.

The bill, approved last week by the state's Assembly and Senate, replaces the death sentence with life in prison without parole.

Conservatives have never been worried about the death penalty. Only poor minorities get executed in Texas!

What a non-story. NJ hasn't executed ANYBODY since 1963!!!!!

If progress is the sum of small acts of courage and small statements of principles, this is a leap forward. Governor Corzine and the New Jersey legislature are to be commended.
And while I am offering commendations, let give the Speaker of the House one. The menu changed today in the Congressional lunch box. They went organic and local. That's the sort of thing we have been doing in San Francisco for over a decade. That's a San Francisco value, supporting family farms and locally grown produce. Now if I can only get her to pay more attention to the Farm Bill and cut subsidies to big agribusiness.

You know for all the flack NJ gets it just might be one of the better states in the Union. Progressive but not in granola sort of way, solid Senators and Representatives, and the nations best paid teachers.
Heck its the land of Springsteen, John Stewart, and the Chairman of the Board so it cant be all that bad.

Kudos NJ, kudos Corzine...

I am as happy as a pig in shit.

Corzine has been the best Governor, he ended the budget battle by closing the casinos along with the state government offices - that ended that real quick. What good are tools if you don't use them.

I think the last time we executed someone was in 1963. Good for us.

5. Once executed, the punishment is over.

Maybe these death supporting cretins believe spending the rest of one's days in a cage is a delight, but I remember the first to be executed after the reinstatement, Gary Gilmore, fought to BE executed. Many others since have chosen death and the the stupid vindictive populace is only too happy to accommodate. Must be a very empty feeling to have to wait until the next one.

If someone I love was a victim of a capital crime, the last thing I want is for the criminal to have assisted suicide, a kindness these same whackos deny to incurably ill or horribly suffering people. This country is so pathetic since the lemmings wholesale rightward march and the rest of the civilized world knows it.

This is awesome news. When can we move to New Jersey where sanity reins and hearts can truly feel. Maybe next they'll actually rehabilitate prisoners instead of warehousing them where they only become better criminals.

Well done New Jersey!

Welcome to the civilised world!

I don't live in New Jersey, so what they choose to do doesn't effect me very much.

That said, I am in favor of the death penalty. My support isn't based on deterence, justice or vengence however.

It costs about 30k per year to keep someone in prison for a year. A young enough murderer ould easily cost all a million bucks. They are not worth it.

Like a bad dog, just put 'em down and move on.
