Anorexia may be caused by inherited differences in the way a sufferer's brain operates, leading to obsessive behaviour, according to research.

Rather than being triggered by images of super-thin models and celebrities, the eating disorder could be brought on by the in-built way in which the brain responds to pleasure and reward.

Are these "researchers" (who paid them, I wonder?) discounting the direct correlation between young girls and women being bombarded by advertising/magazines/television/movies showing skeletal models and actresses (famous or infamous) and having a poor body image? So I guess the epidemic of anorexia and bulimia just came out of nowhere? Just genetics...I don't think so.
When I watch an independent film made in another country, the people look "real", they're not always Hollywood "picture perfect", and I appreciate it and can relate to it. When I see an American made film, the women all look like skeletons or walking clothes hangers. No connection?
I'm sorry but I disagree.

Should we rule out a nature-plus-nurture combination, then?

Research has shown, too, that girls exposed to ultra-thin models became dissatisfied with their bodies. Male college students exposed to male models experienced the same. An environment that nurtures unrealistic body image one way or another has a negative influence among adolescents.

Anorexia may largely be caused by heredity, but an environment that promotes a realistic body image will be more helpful in keeping temperamentally vulnerable children from thinking that there is an "objective" body image as exemplified by models and celebrities.

As always, we should count in "nature and nurture".
