Ronpaul

Congressman Ron Paul's presidential campaign has been defined by exceeded expectations. During debates, the Texas Republican has separated himself from the GOP pack with unrelenting criticism of the Iraq War. On the Internet, his supporters have flooded discussion forums with such ferocity that several websites have barred their participation. And in the world of political fundraising no one, not even Sens. Hillary Clinton or Barack Obama have had single day successes that approach Paul's cash hauls.

The latest of these occurred yesterday, when the Paul campaign took in a record $6 million in a 24-hour period. The total, which came a month and a half after supporters - independent of the candidate - brought in $4.2 million dollars on a single day, eclipsed the record $5.7 million that Sen. John Kerry raised after he received the 2004 Democratic nomination.

The money is indeed impressive and has made Paul the envy of some in the GOP field.

"We have friendly relationships with a couple of the other campaigns," Jesse Benton, Paul's spokesperson told the Huffington Post. "I joke with the [Mike] Huckabee campaign. We wish we had their poll numbers and they wish they had our cash."

But, as Benton acknowledges, with surveys showing Paul well behind in Iowa and trailing in New Hampshire, the question remains, what can the campaign do with their stuffed coffers to generate growth in the polls.

Apparently, a lot. Already preparations are being made to build infrastructure in the February 5th primary states, signifying that Paul plans to stay in the race no matter how the early elections go.

"Our immediate focus is Iowa and New Hampshire," said Benton. "But what is great about having this money now is that it allows us to step back, hire staff and get some paid media for the February 5th primary. We still need to do well in New Hampshire and Iowa to prove that we can continue to grow and maintain momentum."

Paul's team will also be promoting what it calls the "Christmas Vacation" program, which involves paying the room and board expenses of college students who want to help out in the first two states during the winter break.

But it's not just college kids who are coming on board. Within the next few days, the Paul campaign says they will hit 200 employees nationally with roughly half of them based in Iowa.

"We are hiring people so fast it's hard to keep track," said Benton

In addition, Paul will be devoting more money to advertisements, with a fifth campaign commercial set to be released soon in both New Hampshire and Iowa. And yet, for someone who has profited so bountifully of the web, little in terms of Internet innovations is being planned.

"We will go as far as the web wants us to go," said Benton. "We don't do anything magical on the web. It's just that the message is so powerful that it goes viral and spreads."

Real change for the Paul campaign, however, may not be something that the candidate or his staffers can possibly affect. As Benton notes, the perception of Paul as a fringe candidate (even after all the cash hauls) remains ingrained in the media psyche.

"We still have a ways to go," he said. "To get into the earned media cycle you have to earn it. More and more people are talking about Ron and mentioning him as a candidate. The talk about him being nice and having loyal fans but no chance of winning is finally fading out... These fundraising events have given us a megaphone to say there is a lot of support for us out there."

And indeed, other Republican candidates are starting to take notice. Even if Paul doesn't win the nomination, his fundraising efforts have made him a remarkable political weapon. As an aide to a rival campaign said, when asked what he would like to see the Texan do with all his money: "I'd like to see him spend it on Huffington Post web ads."

He'll donate that haul to charities, like all libertarians concerned about the needy.

Oh, wait...

I went to hear Ron Paul in Elko NV this past Friday. He gave the most inspired political speech since I heard JFK speak way back when.

As an FDR democrat, it was hard for me to leave Kucinich and back RP.

RP said that if we are tired of our big, impotent government being run by the big-money and special interest lobbies in DC, then we have to dismantle the federal government, so the big-money won’t have an empire to control.
It’s true.
Big-money will never give up control of our government voluntarily, and there will never be a majority of politicians courageous enough to give big money the boot.

So rather than have a big gov./empire controlled by big money, I agree with RP: return the power to the states & counties, where residents have more control.

As always, in 'merica, it's the lesser of the evils.

I hope he goes nuc-le-ar against these other Bush-bots. They have so many weaknesses and the American people hate them as a whole. I hope the Repubs are smart enough to realize that only Paul could beat a Democrat in this cycle. (Unless the raise the terror level....again -haha)

I like his nationalism but look at the AARP this month as to how the candidates feel about health care.
Paul would be good if you are rich or healthy, hopefully both, and eternally young.
How many Harley riders would establish adequate Health savings accounts before they thought of the bike, or how many women would end up dead of cancer because they just didn't have the money to spend on a doctor visit because of some lump or abdominal discomfort they figured would go away on it's own? So the kid has been crying again, we'll get to the doctor if we can borrow some money.
People would just end up paying higher rents to landlords or banks if they have money in hand.
His is a real survival of the fittest program for sure. His health care ideas are really turn of the century...1800.

Thanks for the coverage Sam! We SURE DO APPRECIATE IT!

You ask an important question in your title. We do trust Dr. Paul and his campaign because this isn't Dr. Paul's first rodeo, so to speak, and he has tackled these hurdles before..ie, media blackout and running against neocons and neolibs...yet getting re-elected in his district time and time again (Tom Delay cowers to him lmao).

More importantly, I think the material that really hasn't been discussed in depth is the MILLIONS that have been spent OUTSIDE of the official campaign by people, on their own volition...to bring Dr. Paul's message and record to their friends, neighbors and fellow Americans. MILLIONS.

NOT BOUGHT BY THE CAMPAIGN, BUT WITH THEIR OWN MONEY

blimp

100s of highway billboard signs

banners

signage

stickers

slim jims (brochures)

buttons

rallies

festivals

concerts

transportation

grassroots canvasing www.fiveforfreedom.com

www.grannywarrior.com

www.teaparty07.com

people quiting their jobs to campaign

voluntarily

painting their cars

becoming delegates

organizing registration rallies

going door to door

writing handwritten letters to primary state
residents

writing their client base for support (stansberry, schiff, rogers, etc)

puchasing newspaper adds (one gentleman spent $85,000 of his own money in USA today)

started radio stations

made DVDs for distribution

self generated organized overseas meetups

1300 meetups across the U.S.

changed their lifestyles after becoming knowledgeable about economics. housing, savings, gold/silver, debt, property rights, becoming more volunteering and philanthropic

i think the last is the most exciting. it is uncanny how many opportunities i've had talking to strangers that we share an interest in dr. paul. so many people. so different backgrounds. one american principle. freedom.

damnit people, let us take our country back.

Unless Paul runs for the Libertarian Party...he's toast after Feb 5th

But he has a nice chunk of change to take lots of blimp rides.

Ron Paul is the Republican Dennis Kucinich: absolutely unelectable.

Personally, I'd love to see Gravel and Ron Paul do a remake of "Grumpy Old Men."

The most stunning thing about his campaign is how easily he's made hay while the sun shines. I'm totally facinated to see what happens to him in Iowa, New Hampshire and No. Carolina.

I like some of his ideas, especially the one's he's rehashing from the Goldwater days. (My Republican dad would have loved him, except for his stance on abortion.) It's really funny how the tables have turned so much since the Eisenhower years to where Republicans are the racists and the ones pandering to religion. I think it makes Paul sick to see how much damage the Reagan revolution has done to his party. It would have made Goldwater barf, too.

But I'm not entirely comfortable with a candidate who repudiates the neo-natzi's contributing to his campaign, while refusing to return their money or give it to charity. That's the part that seems more Republican than Libertarian.

But, hey... when you got so little to work with, it's no time to be looking a gift horse in the mouth.

Without Ron Paul, this election would be another "not a dime's worth of difference" election. I would be the choice between another self-righteous nut case to whom God speaks, or a spineless Tickle Me Elmo.

I can sum up what's truly sad about Paul's candidacy: For most of the past 28 years, we've elected presidents who have publicly expressed no interests in running government. These men claimed to want to lead but not govern. And they've lambasted and put down virtually all aspects of government and gutted programs whether they work or not all the while bloating the business fortunes of campaign donors and the national security complex. I have to ask: How can any reasonable person expect a politician to govern who doesn't believe in government? Has anyone bother to ask Paul this very simple question (the response, he only wants to shrink government is disingenuous and simply not supported by his statements). Frankly, I don't give care what Paul says but I care what he means and that is crystal clear: He could be the most honest individual ever to walk into DC but this doesn't qualify him to run a government. Whether Paul or the rest of his follows like it; we need government and we are going to have to live with it; that being the case, it might be nice to elect someone to lead it that doesn't have an abiding interest in shutting it down. In closing let me say that Paul's candidacy at this time is patently ludicrous as is his libertarian ideology.

Americans are witnessing history...
The revolution has begun....

Watch the bombs fall.
Watch them try to continue to ignore him..
Then watch them gang up and try to confuse him..
He will be steadfast and his message absolute.
"The people will no longer accept rogue government and corrupt politicians. We will demand truth and we want justice."

Ron Paul is the vehicle of choice, but do not mistake him for the ONLY vehicle.

You will now begin to witness what has made this country great and unlike any other..
We are all Americans.
Watch how we all unite against this corrupt government.
Watch how the populous wakes up, one by one, and comes around to the calls of their brothers and sisters.
We have tasted the taste of freedom and we have to take control, now, before its too late.

Despite my reservations, I'm going to actually register republican so I can vote for the good doctor in the primary. We don't have the luxury of a perfect candidate at this point and I don't trust a single spinless, special interest democrat (Gravel and Kuchinich are done, sorry.)

For so long I have turned away in disgust from the actions of our government.

Those running for office all were promising more of the same: war and welfare.

Warantless searching, spying, torture.

Preemptive war against peoples and nations that we had attacked in the first place.

Inflation, the housing bubble, the dot-com bubble, offshore outsourcing.

Bloated bureaucracies supposedly making us safer, healthier, more educated, more energy independent.

ENOUGH!

Dr. Paul has cured my apathy.
