Sherri Shepherd: I Couldn't "Beat" My Kid In A "Rich White Folks' Store"

Yesterday on "The View," Sherri Shepherd discussed taking her two-year-old son Jeffrey to a toy store that was having a sale instead of giving him a nap. She described the store, Giggle, as "a rich white folks' store."

What distinguishes a "rich white folks' store" from any other store? For Sherri, it's the inability to physically discipline her screaming child. Jeffrey was crying as they shopped for toys, but Sherri told the panel that, because she felt guilty about bringing him to the store instead of letting him nap, "I couldn't do what I normally would have done. Plus the people [were] looking at me like, this wasn't a store that looked like they beat the kids. So I had to do as the Romans do when I was in the Roman store."

It remains unclear whether these Romans came before or after the Christians.

Shepherd calls herself a comedian, but what she's saying is not funny. Her comments reveal the unease and inferiority she feels in comparison to and in the presence of whites. No amount of career success can erase her personal sense of shame as a black person. Why do people scream that a double standard is being applied when her comments only reinforce a concept of white superiority. Her words are not racist, only the social/historical context in which they were formed.

I think Rosie was funny and added a lot to the show whether you agreed with her or not, Sherry is just plain dumb. How did she get on the view? I think they have really "dumbed down" this show since last season. To bad. Whoopi is trying real hard to be respectable.
Joy is just plain funny as hell. She and Whoopi is the reason to watch that show.

Ah the world according to Sheri Shepard is quite the fantasy land. There Jesus came first, the world is flat and stagnant, the Greeks feed their the lions with Christians and now apparently the Romans beat their kids but not in the Roman store.
One does have to applaud Ms. Shepard for being able to have done quite well for herself despite her stupidity for she sits as a commentator on a national women's programme produced by Barbara Walters. That's quite an accomplishment.
Still the question remains why? If it is comedic value then we should spare her the embarrassment. It would be a mercy firing really. If she were a financial instrument like say a stock, right now she would be heavily shorted with the stock in freefall but she's not, she's a mediocre comedic actress who was once a legal secretary. But her main crime isn't her fault, it is the fault of the educational system in the United States that is not only producing idiots but failing to produce also people with much common sense.
But I do admit that she is fearless because by now she must realize that brilliant she is not.

Huffpost editors: you should change the headline here. Sherri didn't really say she would have beat her kid if it wasn't an upscale store. She was riffing on an amusing scenario that had a racial angle. At the end she adds a throw-away line that really can't be taken at face value.

Readers: these abusive posts are over the top--I hope it's not just white folks doing the trashing and name-calling; that would be too depressing.

Why shouldn't someone with life experience and a sharp sense of humor get to add her views on the view? do only PhD's get to have opinions and jobs in what is--let's face it––an entertainment show?

Interesting how Sheppard is seen by so many as representing her "community" while Goldberg's intelligent commentary gets little to no attention at all.

The simple truth of the matter is that many here who say such things are picking and choosing who they want to see represent said "community" because it reinforces the stereotypes that they have already accepted to be true.

No one ever claims that Bill O' Reilly or Bill Maher represent their "community" (whatever community that might be) but the ugly double-standard that permeates our culture always rears its head when anyone non-white is speaking on any issue whatsoever.

I got rid of my TV ten years ago. I have a nice big flatscreen with an SvideoIn jack that I plug to my computer and run dvds, online movies out of Google Videos, etc and don't miss broadcast television one little bit. No Fox news, no CNN, No View, No Barney, no 4th grade crap masquerading as science....

If I want news, I get online and dig around for it...

My time spent with 12minuts of advertizing for every 7minutes of programing is long past... and I don't miss it one iota.
