I will withold judgement...the screenplay by Aaron Sorkin (of West Wing fame) may have a few theatrical political comments tucked in neatly. Hanks is no conservative either....
Umm, people should actually see the movie before they judge it. Try not to be one of those typical religious hypocrites that judges a movie they haven't even seen yet, nor ever will.
I saw CWW at the LA premiere. It's a damn good movie and damn funny. Hoffman is a riot. It also makes you think, which very few people actually do nowadays.
Tom Hanks screwed up "Bonfire of the Vanities" so bad that it was unrecognizable. Maybe it was the screenwriters.
This portrayal of events overlooks the harm done by trying to bankrupt the Soviets by using radical Muslims. Carter's hawk, Brzezinski, claims credit for the strategy. Reagan continued it. Bush 41 continued it. Clinton armed the radical Muslims in Bosnia and Kosovo.
William Casey believed that any religious nut was better than an atheist communist. So strong was Casey's belief as former director of the CIA, that he insured that all radical Muslins were armed.
Now we are paying the price in blowback, according to Chalmers Johnson in Blowback and Nemesis.
Now we have to go on the "dark side." We've been on the dark side. Charlie Wilson sat watching the events on 9-11. The film doesn't blame him. Johnson does.
It's a movie based on a true story, not a historical treatise.
brzenzki was more interested in destroying the soviet union to bring capitalism to poland than in doing good things for the usa. He ended up supporting and building up Osama and the islamic fundamentalist. Afghanistan, the USA and the rest of the world would have been much better if carter and brzenzki had never gotten involved in that part of the world.
It's nice to see Roberts looking her real (instead of her "official") age. With that wig, she is a dead ringer for Martha Mitchell.
It's amazing to me that so many people could have such entrenched negative opinions of this movie without having seen the film. I've seen it and I can't wait to see it again. It's smart, fun, and entertaining, a movie for grownups. Hey, but what do I know? I've seen it, so you might want to discount my opinion in favor of those who have not.
I'm looking forward to seeing this. If nothing else, it shows that at least we had a Congressman who did SOMETHING!
I love the line in the trailer where she asks how does this covert war compare to any of the others.
Covert, examine that word. It is only covert if you don't WANT to know about.
There is a great wave in nortwest Costa Rica-we called in Ollie's point. Believe me there was nothing covert about the arms shipments to the Nicaraguan "contras". I saw it once stated that everyone in the world knew about it except the US Congress... not far from the truth.
It won't flop, it will be lauded by a population that can't read.
I should not be so critical, maybe the trailer sucks and the movie will be "enlightening". The CIA can with "good" intention supply military hardware to groups that turn around and attack us.
Sadly, this is not new information.... Axis of oil, I mean Evil....Iran,Iraq and Afghanistan.
I was talking to my daughter last evening, 20 year old woman who lives in NYC. She has such a difference of opinion of the CIA. I grew up in the 1960's thinking the CIA was this slick clandestine organization that could accomplish anything. By contrast, her statement to me last evening was aren't these guys a "bunch of fuck ups". I later found out her opinion was based on the stories and conversations with a XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX in Washington last summer. I found it comical that he thought todays CIA incompetent, but in the past it was "a can do organization".
She also told me when introduced to this man, he said, "My God you are not a Republican are you?" . Point being-every president, whether Democrat or Republican, was so involved, and at the same time so unaware of the activity of CIA, its facinating. Obviously the Kennedy's and Nixon/Kiss, the most aggregious.
I don't know where I am going with this other than to say this movie can't help to be anything but a Sunday school lesson.
Just when you thought Hanks couldn't suck any harder. Not even the great Philip Seymour Hoffman can save this turd.
Hanks et al aren't acting! They are playing their own boring selves.
