Huckabee And Harriet Miers

The Atlantic:

A conservative counter-revolution is breaking out in the talk radio universe and on prominent conservative blogs.

The same forces that joined to force the White House to withdraw Harriett Miers' Supreme Court nomination, a tender by the president that was as explicitly grounded in Miers' identity as a born again evangelical as Huckabee's presidential campaign surge is based on his choice of career and religious affiliation.

Economic conservatives and military security types would be happier with Hillary. She agrees with them 100%, as the article points out. Then why does she call herself a Democrat? Ask Lieberman, I guess.

Propaganda radio has gotten its marching orders from the fascist GOP establishment. Religious nuts are to serve only as pawns, never as kings.

These whacked out Revival Tent Republicans will not be trifled with. They aren't the type who listen to talkradio all that much anyway. This crew gets their marching orders from a HIGHER Authority. Huckabee speaks their language, talks their talk, and has spent a good deal of his life preaching to them. He is their candidate.

Huckabee will win Iowa. The Crusade will march on to NHampshire only to be defeated by those damn Yankees who will have no part of such nonsense. Neither will Wyoming, Nevada or Michigan. He'll win SCarolina and Florida only to be astonishingly crushed on Feb 5th when New York, New Jersey, Illinois, Arizona, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Idaho, Massachusetts, Minnesota, New Mexico and California have their say. Huckabee is a regional populist whose base only has political power in the South and a few other Bible Belt states.

However, the Social Conservatives are going to have to be placated. Huckabee is virtually assured of being the VeeP candidate. The GOP will have no choice. And with Huckabee anywhere on the ticket, the GOP can expect to lose about 40 states. Santorum sized loss. One of the worst electoral routs in American history.

And the GOP will have at least four and probably eight years to listen to the words of Barry Goldwater: "If they suceed in establishing religion as a basic Republican Party tenent, they could do us in."
