Mad for Vlad! Time magazine officially unveiled its annual "Person of the Year" this morning, and it's....Vladimir Putin! I know! Remember that huge thing he did this year that was awesome? Time does, but more importantly, he's not Al Gore — the presumptive nominee based on Nobel/Oscar/identifying and spurring action on an issue which is surely the most globally pressing of our time, with the possible exception of what we may be hiding in our shoes at airports. But! Al Gore was boring, expected; Putin is fresh! And exciting! And surprising — so surprising that he was barely even mentioned at this years' POY panel, except offhandedly by Brian Williams as part of the triumvirate of crazy dictators with Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and Pervez Musharraf, who was looking like he could have been a pretty scary Person of the Year himself around that time. Anyhow, the important thing is, it's not Al Gore, though he got to be runner up. There's a 2000 election joke in there somewhere! (Don't worry, Al, it's not like Putin was ever going to get the Nobel Peace Prize).

So: What does this mean? Well, for one thing, probably more David Remnick on the news! Maybe statements from the candidates, after they're done commenting on America's Top Teen Pregnancy (Jamie Lynn Spears = Political Lightning Rod, mark our words). Otherwise, the good news is it will shower attention on Putin and Russia, which, as Remnick pointed out on "NBC Nightly News" last month, we ignore at our peril. He's worth re-quoting here:

We should pay attention to what's going on in Russia for any number of reasons. First of all it's a gigantic country, with a gigantic land mass, with nuclear weapons, with enormous economic resources, its importance in geopolitical terms is fantastic -- it borders on Iran and Central Asia, it borders Europe -- it couldn't be more important. But our eye has been off the ball essentially for quite a long time (a) because the Cold War ended and (b) because we've been so obsessed, for obvious reasons, on South Asia and the Middle East .

Time's Adi Ignatius sheds some light in the cover piece, creating a pretty awesome picture of Putin as one hell of a villain at the beginning (cold stare; compact, coiled-strength body; tightly-controlled face, save for veins on his forehead that look "ready to pop." Yikes). Thank goodness, somewhere in there lies a softie: His favorite Beatles song is "Yesterday."

Speaking of yesterday, that's when I noted that Time seemed underwhelmed by its own list, including Putin, whom they all but called a lame duck. Gore they red-herringed as doing his heavy POY lifting in 2006, and second runner-up J.K. Rowling they damned with this faint praise: "Hard to argue she was the most important person of 2007." But apparently not hard to argue that she was the third-most important person! Well, the important thing is, God's Green Earth got at least some recognition. Hopefully this edition will help save the environment. Now, get on out there, Time, and sell some magazines! As I always say, if a tree is standing it means circ must be down.

Who gives a fuck about Time's precious little lists? I seem to remember this uber-retarded top 100 bests of the 20th Century, where Elvis was buried beneath the Beatles and/or Sinatra and given this Bullshit Dick Clark write-up. Switch it around, put Elvis over Frank or the Fabs, and have Casey Kasem write about the Beatles, and you can see where I'm going w/ it. Point is-Time's fucking lists are only important inside their own heads, and they've basically buried the lead here as always. Putin? why not the current Pope? Morons.

I don't know, I kind of like Vlad, at least
when the oil company tried a hostile corporate
takeover of HIS country, he had the fortitude
to take issue with the situation...still
kinda scary-looking, though...

Hi,

Does Vladimir Putin, in foreign affairs, only do things which are in Russia's national interest?

Can the same be said of George W. Bush?

What do U think?

A correct choice by TIME

I just moved away from Russia after living there for the last 18 years, in part due to my disgust with the current political direction.

I too was shocked at Time's choice, but on further reflection, I must say I have to agree.

The West, left and right, has been deriving enormous psychological satisfaction from rubbing Russia's nose in the mud for the last 25 years.

Most would like to continue to treat Russia as a subjugated adversary. The Clintons' actually re-started the Cold War in the 90's with their covert support for Chechen terrorists and even more so with the expansion of NATO.

Well, the West needs another a cold slap on the face to snap us out of our late 20th century delusions of grandeur, since sadly, Iraq doesn't seem to have been enough.

The Cold War Victory Party is over, and much as I reject his means, Vladimir Putin is certainly the face symbolizing that important truth.

Time has given us that slap, and done a definite journalistic service in bringing this important fact to the attention of the US.

Let's hope that this strong medicine will help us turn away from our narcissistic view of the world, and realize we need to work much, much more closely with other nations to solve our current problems and make progress.

Remember: if the Fed lowers interest rates too precipitously due to domestic clamour over economic slowdown, the dollar is in real danger of implosion. And the more arrogant we are now, the less the Chinese, European, Russian and Islamic will pity us when they purchase cheap US assets in the future and start directing our economy.

Putin is the ONLY thing keeping WWIII at bay and there are many who know it.

Don't you wish they would just get over themselves and drop the "it isn't about the best....but the most interesting" man bullshit. It's a crock of intellectual malarky just like the rest of our media. We should all see it from your perspective and stop thinking for ourselves. We have mainly you guys to thank for most of this global mess.....boycott Time!

My person of the year is the little starving black child, standing with tears streaming down his cheeks, staring fixidly at his dead parents and his siblings!
He has been my person of the year, every year that I can remember, and shall be every year into the future, as long as there is one starving child out there that has been neglected by his fellow man!

As for those high flying jet set politicians types who fail the starving poor of the world, they, along with Time Magazine, should be deposited in societies trash can!

What Keeps Mankind Alive?
(Weill/Brecht 1928)

You gentlemen who think you have a mission
To purge us of the seven deadly sins
Should first sort out the basic food position
Then start your preaching, that's where it begins

You lot who preach restraint and watch your waist as well
Should learn, for once, the way the world is run
However much you twist or whatever lies you tell
Food is the first thing, morals follow

So first make sure that those who are now starving
Get proper helpings when we all start carving

The last Dem to be the sole 'Person of the Year' was Bill Clinton in 1992. In that 15 year period Republicans have been named four times. When the GOP took control of Congress Newt Ginrich was named, but not Nancy Pelosi last year despite her being the first female speaker of the House in history. George Bush was named twice in 2000 and 2004. However, Clinton wasn't named when he was re-elected in 1996. Time clearly has an anti-Dem bias.

Why not honor Vladimir Hijo de Putin? State should arrange for an outlaw motor cycle club to designate Vlad as an honorary guest of honor at a gang rape too. The cold war is so over.

Time Magazine's Person of the Year is a dangerous, neurotic, intellectual exercise. When they made Adolph Hitler Man of the Year, I'm sure there were smirking neurotic intellectuals shouting at those critical, "It isn't about the best person of the year, just the most fascinating person you idiot!" Great, so meanwhile, everyone guilty of this misinterpretation-waiting-to-happen (as in accident-waiting-to-happen) hears serious American praise for Hitler at a point in history when it Actually Might Have Made A Difference. So Time Magazine, stop smirking at your intellectual inferiors who don't get it, and just shut the up. You're a shame and a disgrace to us non-smirking, non-neurotic intellectuals.

Many may disagree but Putin is the correct choice for Man Of The Year. Why? Simple. As GWB has been trying to force his beliefs on the world through attacking soverign nations and bleeding us into poverty through Jesus Christ, Putin has been taking care of his citizens. During the last seven years as GWB has been bleeding us Putin has raised the living standard for the Soviets, putting Russia into the black with natural resources and gained friends around the world. Now, compare GWB and his deeds and I think even the dumbest can understand Time Magazine choosing Putin.
