Clinton Insiders Fear Secret Service Records Could Damage Campaign

Even as Hillary Clinton's operatives were dropping hints that Republicans would exploit Barack Obama's youthful drug use, some Clinton insiders privately worried about her own vulnerability because the Bush administration possesses detailed knowledge of her movements - and her husband's - over the past seven years.

Because of Sen. Clinton's unique status as the first former First Lady to run for President - and because her husband was succeeded by a Republican - she is the first candidate to have both her and her spouse be subject to regular, long-term surveillance by an Executive Branch agency controlled by the opposing political party.

Since they left the White House in 2001, Bill and Hillary Clinton have been under the protection of the Secret Service, formerly a branch of the Treasury Department and now part of the Homeland Security Department. Records are maintained showing where they go and whom they meet.

Homeland Security is under the control of Michael Chertoff, a longtime Clinton nemesis dating back to his work as a Republican lawyer on the Senate's Whitewater investigation in the 1990s. In 2003, Sen. Clinton cast the sole dissenting vote against Chertoff's nomination as a federal judge in protest against his abrasive conduct during the Whitewater inquiry.

Though Secret Service records are supposed to be closely held secrets, a source close to the Clintons told me that it is believed that senior Republicans have received regular briefings about movements of the Clintons that might prove embarrassing if released during the general election campaign.

OK, I would like some credit. I have been saying since the day Clinton announced her candidacy that the Republicans were only pretending to be afraid of her. They would LOVE for her to be the party's nominee. Then, as soon as she's been chosen, anointed, kissed and sent on to this fantasy of unstoppable victory the Dems keep stupidly swooning about, the White House hits all print and online media with a "leak" about Bill Clinton's activities.

Dems: If you want to WIN in 08, get off the Clinton train now. Right now. You are as foolish as the rightwing Christians who bought into all the Bush Christ-Speak. If you want to win and see real progress in this country, get behind Obama and Edwards---and press them to join one another on the same ticket after the primaries edge one or both of them out. Together, they could bring this election home and change the nation.

Clinton is a hardworking and brilliant woman, but she is tainted, tainted, tainted. And Bill Clinton will always be a liability to her and to us.

Gee, does this mean that the DLC camp is as corrupt as the right wingers say they are? Obviously, a Clinton administration is not as bad as Bush43's but corrupt? Very likely. I love Bill's charm, open ease and man of the people image. He is a fantastic communicator, especially when speaking, off the cuff. Hillary is just as smart though less charismatic but they're a true power couple and love the wealth that comes with it.

Why we should consider continuing the BCBCB dynasty is beyond me. It will only lead US to JeeBush and the Norte American Fascist Union, as GHWB intends.

The Clinton's are against full disclosure; which leads one to ask: "What are they hiding??"

We've had 7 years (with another one to come) of a President who doesn't believe in full disclosure and hides behind executive privilege. I don't want to see another 4 to 8 years of the same back-room crap!!!

I think it's too early for GOP sources to "leak" what they know about Bill and Hillary's doings the past 7 years. The smart thing to do is let the early Caucuses (sp?) get out of the way, and if it looks like Hillary may take the primaries, oops...a leak or two, or three.
I certainly hope they won't wait to use Secret Service info when and if she gets the Democratic nomination...that would really put a large feather in the GOP candidates hat; and maybe loose us the election.
