Media Upbraids Itself For Its Own Unfair Treatment Of Clinton

These days, if you walk into any campaign office, you're not likely to be able to swing a stick without thwacking somebody who feels the media isn't treating their candidate fairly. It's much less frequent that these grievances receive a fair hearing. And it's rarer still to find the media willing to assail itself for its perceived harms. Yesterday, however, The Washington Post's Howard Kurtz did just that on behalf of Hillary Clinton. And what can we say? It's a nice piece of work, if your campaign can get it.

Kurtz's overarching point is this: "Clinton's senior advisers have grown convinced that the media deck is stacked against them, that their candidate is drawing far harsher scrutiny than Barack Obama. And at least some journalists agree." There's a case to be made, here. As a fitting example, Kurtz makes lengthy mention of David Gregory's recent tilt with Clinton on the Today Show. During his interview, Gregory, appropriately, pressed Clinton for failing to give him a straight answer on her campaign's contention that a vote for Barack Obama was a "roll of the dice." A day later, however, Gregory failed to apply the same tenacious standards during his interview with John Edwards. Faced with a response filled with the same dodging and the same empty platitudes, Gregory let Edwards skate. In both cases, it was like watching a grown man interrogate a Pez dispenser, but in the case of Edwards, Gregory was only too happy to swallow the candy.

There's an even better example of rank media "unfairness" toward Clinton that Kurtz fails to mention, actually. In the period between the debate in Philadelphia and the one in Las Vegas, the media indulged itself in a hopelessly inane discussion of Clinton's use of "the gender card." Chris Matthews was one of the notable drum majors of this discussion, quixotically endeavoring to find dark undercurrents to her use of Harry Truman's famous "If you can't stand the heat, get out of the kitchen" line and a statement Clinton made at Wellesley, in which she praised the institution for preparing women to ably compete in a man's world. As if she would say otherwise, in deference to every other candidate.

The "gender card" discussion was, at the root, unfair. Clinton, obviously, can do nothing about the fact that she's a woman. But more to the point, if there's advantage to be had there, why is it unfair for her to claim it? Rudy Giuliani gets to make hay of his proximity to the World Trade Center, after all. John Edwards gets to bask in his "mill village" upbringing. Neither man has been the focus of a fortnight's senseless circumlocutions on these circumstances.

The whole thing reached its apotheosis in Las Vegas, where Campbell Brown, of all people, asked Clinton if she believed in the existence of an "old boys' club." In the split second after the question was asked, I wondered exactly what brand of mouthwash Brown was going to use to rinse the taste of utter preposterousness out of her mouth, but then there was Clinton, parrying the question with charm and aplomb, simultaneously arch and above the fray: "Campbell...Well, it is clear, I think, from women's experiences that from time to time, there may be some impediments." It was a great answer, and it went a long way toward finally changing the conversation.

So, Mark Halperin is correct when he tells Kurtz, "She's just held to a different standard in every respect." He's similarly right when he says, "It's not a level playing field." But there's the rub. When CNN begins its debate by egging the other candidates to attack Clinton, it's not a level playing field. But it's also not a level playing field when Clinton gets handed the planted "diamonds or pearls" question. It's not a level playing field when, as Kurtz himself notes, all six morning news shows are ready to respond at a moment's notice to help Clinton launch the new "humanizing" facet of her campaign message. And until any other candidate gets Howard Kurtz, Mark Halperin, and Howard Fineman - luminaries all - to inveigh on their behalf against the media's unfairness, we're just going to have to say, yes, indeed, it is most definitely not a level playing field.

Let's face it. In the grand scheme of things, Clinton is The Get. She's the number-one seed. The road to the White House goes through her. And if the downside is scrutiny, the upside is the ability to change the conversation, as we've mentioned before. The talk of "the gender card" has indelibly shifted to talk of "change" and "experience." This is a fair fight, it's the fight the Clinton campaign sought, and it's the fight it's getting. Howard Fineman is of the belief that the media isn't "tough enough on Obama," observing, "There may be something to that. He's the new guy, an interesting guy, a pathbreaker and trendsetter perhaps." But whose "path" is Obama trying to "break?" Whose "trend" is he attempting to offset? Clinton's, of course.

In the end, we have this quip from Clinton spokesman Jay Carson: "I'll just say that at the Clinton campaign, we do our best to live by the old adage that it's not wise to pick fights with people who buy ink by the barrel."

Seeing as those people are so willing to reach into that barrel to make a donation, why would they?

Any politician who wants fair handling is either a wimp or deluded or both. They all know what it will be like and want the power bad enough to put up with it. I have no sympathy for republican or democratic candidates. I do sympathize with their families.

At this point, it"s hard to tell if the polls are driving the news or the news is driving the polls.
God knows the issues seem to have vanished entirely.
News coverage on Iraq has virtually disappeared, there"s been no mention of the new improved fast-tracked trade deals, healthcare proposals, immigration reform, or the fact that the Status Quo congress is carrying on business as usual, while pretending to be interested in oversight.
Genuine reporting seems have been replaced with "election entertainment" with only the frontrunners participating.
I seriously hope that the voters in Iowa and New Hampshire throw the entire process on its ear, and vote the issues instead of the personalities.
Besides showing up the political pundits for the fools that they are, it might just be a step in returning the process to the American people.
So go Iowa!
Go New Hampshire!
Show these clowns what you"re made of, and send a message to the RNC AND DNC.
You can do better than this, and we"re tired of being manipulated.

Jason,
I'm not sure where you're coming from. You're correct in pointing out that Clinton actually has an advantage in media coverage. But, then you agree with a couple proposterous claims that some of the coverage is unfair towards her.

Clinton playing the gender card is legitimate criticism of her, and in no way is it analagous to Edwards using his mill worker's son upbringing to distinguish himself. Edwards never himself, or through his surrogates, complained that the media was being unfair to him because he's a mill worker's son. Huge difference.

And, Campbell Brown pitched Hillary the biggest softball in debate history with that "are you playing the gender card" question. To think that Hillary did not have a well planned answer to a gender card question is ludicrous. Her campaign was salivating for a chance to talk about that issue, and they prepared an answer that had the media swooning for days. Hillary got to simultaneously play the strong, reasonable woman who doesn't complain about perceived gender bias ; and at the same time she played the gender card by talking about grandmothers travelling hundreds of miles to fulfill their dreams and meet a woman who would be president. I mean, gimme a break. That answer was as well crafted and beneficial to Hillary as a campaign commercial they would pay hundreds of thousands of $ for.

And, then the media buys into the spin that Campbell Brown asked her a surprising, tough question that crossed the line, but somehow Hillary pulled through only because she is some sort of brilliant debater and public speaker. Laughable.

I used to worry that Senator Clinton couldn't win in the general election, now I worry that she could. I was a big fan of Bill Clinton, now I can't stand either one of them. I cannot go from Hope in a greater America to Stay the course with Hillary. If she wins the nomination I will do something I have never done before in my entire life, vote for a Republican. If she's the nominee, my Obama yard sign will be replaced by one for Rudy, Mitt, or Mike.

Last night NBC Nightly News ran what could only be called a four minute ad for Senator Clinton.
The report chastised Obama for missing votes, and went so far as to run Ms. Clinton herself saying, "To be President you must be present" .
NBC failed to mention the voting record of any other candidate for comparison.
They also failed to mention that not one single Senator running for President voted on the Nafta extention into Peru.
I guess I shouldn"t be surprised, as main stream media failed to cover the deal at all.
The Nafta extension into Peru was the first fast-tracked free trade package before the 110th Congress and was seen as a bellwether as to whether the Democratic Congress, elected in part on their opposition to just these sort of deals, would stand up and be counted.
Apparently not.
So I don't see where there is any anti-Clinton bias in the news. The corporate owned News outlets are going to parrot the talking points of the status quo politicans, and right now, Hillary Clinton is the darling of K-street, wall street, and business as usual on the hill.

I feel it is 100% true. The media dogs Hillary Clinton and drags up anything and everything 20 years old. They also constantly pitch on the sexist card.

But they never ever get on Obama for anything he has done. None of the MSM has questioned him on his resolve to bomb Iran. In his 2004 campaign he said to a reporter he would not hesitate to bomb Iran. On the say so of bush and his Iran nuclear lie. But he goes after Hillary for the fact that they based the vote for the IWR resolution on a lie bush told them.

What's the difference. I don't understand unless they are afraid if they say anything bad about Obama he will scream they are racist.

This morning's newspaper ran an Associated Press story about a man who is accused of murdering his wife. The headline reads "Clinton neighbor arrested." It then goes on to say that the accused, Carlos Perez-Olivo, lives three doors down from the Clintons - as if the close proximity of their house has something to do with his crime.

Do I find this unfair? Yes. Stupid? Absolutely.

I"ve come to the conclusion that media bias absolutely does exist, but only when its working against your candidate or cause¦..

Personally, I'm still scratching my head over the collective media brain-shutdown surrounding Clinton's purported 'misstep', during the debate, on the question of NY Governor Spitzer's proposal to offer special, restricted drivers' licenses to undocumented residents.

To any person with a functioning grasp of the English language, her initial response made perfect sense -- as did her follow-up comment. For the learning-challenged, she first said the proposal "makes a lot of sense" -- she did NOT say she ENDORSED it.

She then amplified, saying that she UNDERSTOOD Spitzer's frustration and his objective -- given the Feds' abject failure to control immigration -- but she didn't necessarily ENDORSE the proposal as an ultimate solution.

It was, I believe, Chris Dodd (bless him!) who jumped on her second response -- as any self-respecting opponent might be expected to -- and, in a real reach, accused her of contradicting herself.

The entire press establishment -- the same vigilant keepers of the Fourth Estate who failed to challenge Junior in the Iraq run-up, stenographically fed us pablum on him and took him seriously as President until very recently -- immediately adopted the false narrative on Clinton's comments and proceeded to do what it does best: endlessly recycled the meme.

Kurtz has been among the worst offenders in that regard.

For the record...

LIMITS OF LIABILITY OF MOTOR VEHICLE ACCIDENT INDEMNIFICATION CORPORATION (NY State)

Effective January 1,1996 for accidents occurring thereafter, the maximum recovery for injury to one person is $25,000 and the maximum recovery for injury to two or more persons as the result of one accident is $50,000. In case of death the applicable coverage is $50,000/100,000.

* Note: there is NO coverage for property (i.e., your CAR) damage!

In other words, if you're seriously injured by an undocumented, uninsured motorist in NY State, YOU'RE SCREWED.

That's a lot of commentary for the simple point -- which is exactly right -- that the biggest stick in the game is the Clintons. They're the "champ" or the "incumbent" and to beat them you have to overcome their inherent advantage and win decisively. Ties and close calls will go to the Clintons, just like it is in heavyweight championship fights.

What is neither said nor acknowledged, however, is the fact that right from the beginning Senator Obama has never complained or whined about unfair treatment -- unlike the Clintons. Indeed, his own key supporters were begging him to confront and criticize both Senator Clinton and the media coronation her campaign staged in the late summer and early fall -- to little or no avail. The real story here is the consistency and the core integrity of the Obama campaign. He has had a message that has been consistent from the outset and while it has matured and ripened it hasn't changed. No other candidate can say the same to the same degree. Nor does Howard Fineman's "left field" suggestion that Senator Obama has received a free pass from the media hold water. He's been there, answered the questions and presented his case. He's stood up to a reasonably consistent -- until lately anyway -- chorus of media geniuses bloviating to the effect that Hillary is the inevitable winner and that Barack can't seem to get untracked. Now, all of a sudden, as the same geniuses are waking up to the fact they were missing the real story for the last several months, they want to talk about how he hasn't been tested by media scrutiny. Bunk!! He doesn't have to be attacked unfairly, figuratively beaten and left for dead in order for the media to say he has been tested. Indeed, if the media wants to beef up its testing where it has been completely and embarrassingly incompetent, they ought to have a look at their free pass given over the past 7 years to the current occupant of 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue.

I don't care if the media trashes Clinton. Or Obama. Frontrunners, maybe, but qualified to be President? No. So, have at them. I only regret that the media is not giving enough time to those who are qualified: Richardson, Kucinich, Dodd.

You get it about half right; then blow it with the "dimonds and pearls" example. "Planted question", by whom? And doesn't that smack of the non story about Hillary and "planted questions."

The Dimonds and Pearls question (and HOW does that serve Hillary?") was a stupid choice made by CNN in a search for some fluff.

SO, even in your piece about fair play to the Clintons, you pull a major boner of the stripe so often used to tilt the deck against the Clintons. Or consider that the HP hired Marc Cooper, an extremely confused individual who has written more personal vitriol against the Clintons than even his friends like right wing nutcase David Horowitz.

Alas, when we look at the facts, your "She's the Front runner" arguement falls apart. Bush was the front runner too... Did the press ever go into the Harkin stock dump like they did Whitewater?

Have you ever noticed that whenever something negative is brought up about Obama that everyone cries foul on Clinton. There's one word for that - and it ain't "Clinton"...it's DEFLECTION.

Seems that some of this "Clinton is being Negative" is a dirty trick the Republicans or some anti-Hillary operatives (ie. Obama) are pulling to continue to tear her down. Here's an interesting news item that the MSM decided to gloss over - a BarackOsama2008.org site points to an IP address of HillaryClinton.com - that even Andrew Sullivan, an Obama supporter, thought was fishy - http://andrewsullivan.theatlantic.com/the_daily_dish/2007/12/barackosama20-1.html

How many people heard about an Obama volunteer wearing a press badge asking a softball question at an Obama rally?

How many people have heard about Obama having the second worst record in the 106th congress for attending Veteran Committee meetings? (he's missed 19 of 37 meetings) http://noquarterusa.net/blog/2007/12/20/while-illinois-veterans-suffer-obama-campaigns

How many people here have heard about Obama chairing a Senate subcomittee on Foreign Relations and not having one hearing since he started chairing it a year ago?

How many people here have heard that Obama had made only one brief official visit to London " and none elsewhere in Western Europe or Latin America? http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/world/us_and_americas/article3080794.ece

And don't even get started on the Obama's ties to shady developer Tony Rezko...http://www.suntimes.com/news/metro/353829,CST-NWS-rez23.article
