We were touched (and kind of put to shame) by the philanthropic efforts of 8-year-old Stephen Smith, who's been running a holiday toy drive since he was 3 years old. That's right, 3 years old. Is it possible that he's a charity prodigy? Take a look and let us know how Stephen inspires you.

Charity is a selfish act to feel better about your own pathetic existence. The care of others in society should be compulsory and anonymous through the efforts of government.

Sad that those who see only the child and not the idea. So many people who have posted about the way the kid looks and what he has to say and how he says it. I wonder if anyone who has posted gave away anything for any poor person this year much less for christmas. have any of you given a dollar to a poor person/street person this year? I your idealogy so self centered that you refuse to believe anyone, even a smal child, can want for others what they have? I know of very young kids who save to buy toys for kids who don't have any. I also know of very young kids who clean out what doesn't fit in their closet for the kids who don't have clothes, a coat, a toy and force their parents to take these to goodwill. Where did these ideas come from? The parents? Maybe. Tv? Maybe. Where the ideas come from doesn't matter but if more kids were taught that what extras they have can be donated/given away to those less fortunate the world might be a better place. Cynical I am enough to know those who wrote the above posts represent most who could care less about their fellow man. Their kids have toys and clothes piled up in their own rooms. Charity isn't a bad word and should be taught to the adults first so the kids might have a chance. Those who damn SCHIP and have healthy kids should shut up and look at those with sick kids who lose it all down the street. Otherwise it looks like this post is just another one who brings together all the self centered jerks who have it all and are keeping it.

Let us pray:

Dear Lord, may your chosen billionaires leave us something in the trough after they've had their fill.

Amen

If this child had been a girl his parents would have turned him into a beauty pageant contestant... instead they turned him into little Mr Santa.

I think it's wonderful that he and his parents do this. It brings it home what the season is all about. Merry Christmas to all!!!

That's when Lou Dobbs started out. At age 10 months he could count to 100.

The ends justify the means somewhat here, but the kids parents are a disgrace. No 3 year old starts a drive. They started it for him and he liked the attention. By 5 he might have realized more, but this is the another set of parents manipulating a child to live off his fame. I will not buy that he came up with this on his own at 3. Period.

It's a bizarre story, but no doubt kids being kids need to feel like everyone else: like they deserve to get toys, so why not?

This story really makes me kinda sick. Fresh-scrubbed little white children giving cheap plastic crap to the less fortunate, to make them "feel better." Reminds me of the crack Barbara Bush made at the Astrodome after Katrina, about how "this should work well for them because they're underprivileged already." Do the rich little white kids actually go give the toys to the poor kids? Why of course not. That would be "dangerous."

I challenge this kid to go ask Daddy why people are poor. Would be interesting to hear the answer he gets.

This boy is so brave... to be so generous during this Jamie Lynn Spears pregnancy crisis.

Be brave young man

Sounds like a nice story. I wonder what the prodigy thinks of SCHIP. On the one hand you've got Santa Kid giving away toys; on the other you've got President Grinch vetoing their health care.

Maybe he can spend the other 11 months of the year lobbying to help the kids stay healthy enough to enjoy those toys.

I don't buy it. I trust nothing that comes out of Houston, Texas.
A kid from Texas who looks like George Will magically ends up on CNN talking about about philanthropy and his Bible teacher while Huckabee & Romney fight it out in Iowa ? That this kid started at 3 years old is preposterous. I've worked with dozens of kids that age & at 3 they can barely cut & paste. If they would have said he started at 5 or 6 it MIGHT have a shred of credibility. The story comes from KTRK, the Flagship ABC station. Why is it on CNN ? It's not the Cuban Missle Crisis, it's your basic local story. The question is : who pumped it up ?
Don't get me wrong, I'm all for kids giving at Christmas, but the Salvation Army
is a self-righteous profit making organization and generally makes me puke.
Once I was so poor, I had holes in my shoes. It was the middle of winter and my feet were freezing in the snow. I went to a Salvation Army store and tried to buy a pair of $5.00 shoes. They wouldn't take my check. When I appealed to the clerks basic humanity, the guy said, " Tough luck, the Salvation Army isn't a charity. It's a profit making organization. " Screw the Salvation Army. I'd like to know a lot more about the ABC connection to the Republican party and this kids parents before I accept the validity of this story.
Looks more like a Republican Ad than a genuine "feel good" story.
