Amazon.com Inc. said Wednesday its 2007 holiday season was its strongest to date, with Nintendo Wii game systems and the "Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix" DVD among its top-selling products.

The online retailer said it sold about 17 Nintendo Wiis per second when the product was available. The fifth Harry Potter movie led DVD sales, followed by "Planet Earth: The Complete BBC Series" and "Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End."

Other products that sold well included Garmin GPS systems, the Apple MacBook and KitchenAid stand mixers.

When I read the headline, I thought "Great, people are actually buying books." Now I see it's video games and movies. I should have guessed.

Ease of use, much less time consuming, and you don't wait in line, but on-line.

Sorry, couldn't resist.

This trend might die out, if stores ever put customer service and quality of experience at a higher priority. Don't hold your breath, but it is nice to be treated well. They should think about it.

Uh oh! Good news on sales for the season. Must be a mistake!

Online sales are so much easeir then shopping in stores and getting headaches from that whole fiasco. That trend has been increasing each yeard for the past few years. Same with the gift card phenomenon.

I did about 80% of my shopping online this year. The remaining 20% took me an hour to do. It was wonderful!

So why should we be surprised when Target announces sales drop. People are shopping more online when they are able to do so. Except for the thrill of trying on clothes or shoes, it's just easier to buy it on the internet.

On the bright side, "Planet Earth: The Complete BBC Series" ranking so high; bet that information will lead to some new advertising slants coming from the energy, chemical, and manufacturing industries. And if advertising alone doesn't suffice to soothe boardroom flutters, it might even engender a little more environmental responsibility on their part.

Here's hoping they don't continue their trend of limiting their environmental good deeds to only those nations willing and able to control them while seeking to build ever more and ever dirtier facilities in those nations having weak or non-existant environmental laws.

On the dark side: On-line retail sales don't feed as many people as sales in the traditional retail world do. Every on-line sale is one gone from the traditional retail market.

I'm not surprised. They offer good prices, good service and lots of choices. I would much rather deal with them on -line than with some sleazy salesperson at Best Buy or Compusa (which is going out of business).
