Obama And Clinton

The early expressions of sorrow over the assassination of former Pakistani leader Benazir Bhutto on Thursday morning turned into delicate and carefully-worded political posturing between the presidential campaigns on Thursday afternoon.

The suicide attack, which occurred at an election rally in Pakistan, was seized upon by several members of the Republican field to stress national security credentials in times of terrorism. Sen. Barack Obama's campaign, however, used Bhutto's death as a way to draw foreign policy distinctions between himself and his chief rival for the Democratic nomination, Sen. Hillary Clinton.

"Well, it puts on the table foreign policy judgment, and that's a discussion we welcome," said the Illinois Democrat's chief strategist, David Axelrod. "Barack Obama had the judgment to oppose the war in Iraq, and he warned at the time it would divert us from Afghanistan and al Qaeda, and now we see the effect of that. Al Qaeda's resurgent, they're a powerful force now in Pakistan, they may have been involved - we've been here, so I don't know whether the news has been updated, but there's a suspicion they may have been involved in this. I think his judgment was good. Senator Clinton made a different judgment, so let's have that discussion."

Alexrod went on:

The Clinton campaign was quick to respond:

"This is a time to be focused on the tragedy of the situation, its implications for the U.S. and the world, and to be concerned for the people of Pakistan and the country's stability," Clinton spokesman Phil Singer said in a statement. "No one should be politicizing this situation with baseless allegations."

The back-and-forth between the campaigns underscored the heightened pitch of presidential politics and the various frames through which candidates are now addressing foreign policy and national security issues. Following Bhutto's death, the Obama campaign, sought to make the argument that the assassination was an indictment of President Bush's policies in Iraq, which, they claimed, had distracted the United States' attention from more pressing needs in the war on terror. Senator Clinton, they pointed out had voted for those policies.

Story continues below

"It's hard to judge the political significance at this point," said Robert Gibbs, the communications director for Sen. Barack Obama. "If this ultimately turns back to a discussion of foreign policy, I think we are well-suited...The next commander in chief has to have the judgment to deal with it."

Sen. Clinton's campaign took umbrage with the insinuation that Bhutto's death could be traced to the Senator's vote, but only in private. In public they asserted that, if anything, the terrorist attack proved the need for a more experienced hand in the White House.

"I am profoundly saddened and outraged by the assassination of Benazir Bhutto, a leader of tremendous political and personal courage. I came to know Mrs. Bhutto over many years, during her tenures as Prime Minister and during her years in exile," Clinton said, "it certainly raises the stakes high for what we expect from our next president. I know from a lifetime of working to make change."

Sen. Evan Bayh, a Clinton surrogate, took the line of reasoning even further, suggesting that in a general election, Republicans would be able to paint candidates other than Clinton as weak on national security. "When there are unfortunate calamities like this, the Republicans [will say], 'See. See what we told you? We have to have someone who's strong to defend America at a time of concern.' Well, Senator Clinton is strong," he said. "And she's experienced. And she's tough enough to defend this country and do it in a way that's true to our values, the civil liberties we cherish, and that's one of the reasons why I'm supporting her."

The Obama campaign declined to comment on Bayh or Singer's statement, pointing the Huffington Post back to Axelrod's initial remarks.

The single dumbest thing this nation could do right now is elect a one term nobody with no experience that matters one bit in world affairs.
The fact the obama tried to make this horrible event political right away proves the above point. "community organizing" is not what a President is made of.

Democrats need to wake up.

I don't want to have to tell grown men and women to read carefully before making a comment!

Obama NEVER said ANYTHING about Clinton! It is his camp if anything that brought it up. It is a legitimate point.

If anyone is desperate and ruthless, it is the Clinton camp talking about essays in kindergarten and bringing up useless old stories.

When will she release her W.H records?

A person who runs on the achievement of another is unelectable that is without factoring in the fact that 50% oppose her nomination.

What has she done in the senate?

I don't think I saw her pushing universal healthcare vigourously on the senate floor.
Don't ask her because she will tell you she has been fighting for it since she was in High school!

"I know from a lifetime of working to make change." - Hillary Clinton

Beyond her numerous campaign slogans and hair styles, what change has Hillary ever made?

I think most of you are leaping from the cliff. Axelrod didn't BLAME Hillary, he simply pointed out (correctly) that invading Iraq, as Ms. Clinton favored, diverted attention from the main culprit and Mr. Obama saw through the lies from the beginning. I don't see that as off the mark. You Obama bashers need to wake up. It is Ms. Clinton who is toast. She isn't "tough;" she's plain wrong.

Pat Buchanan wants badly for Hillary Clinton to run, the Republicans will tear her apart in the general election, even I won’t vote for Hillary and I’m a life long Democrat.

Who here would support an American government that allows a nation filled with terrorist camps to develop and openly test nuclear weapons. Well we are now debating whether to support the same bastard who allowed an unstable nation like Pakistan to develop nuclear weapons. Why did Bill and Hillary allow Pakistan to develop and test nuclear weapons.

Shut up already Hillary, this terrorist nation develop nuclear weapons on your and Bill Clinton’s watch, what the f### was Bill Clinton thinking. Oh excuse me, he was too busy with Monica in the Oval Office, while Pakistan was building the bomb.

Obama is correct, and if he did not point out now, in three days most of us will forget who was Bhutto; sorry, but that is how far the WEst's memeory goes. Just look at the chimp and fatso in the whitehouse: every week there is a major scandal, and guess what? Nobody remembers, not even Huff PO.

Similarly, if Obama's camp was not to remind, Hillary, Nancy and all those rich Dems, who are really Repubs, would just get away, just like the chimpy bushy's boy.

One is at a loss to evaluate whether Obama's judgment in attempting to politicize the most unfortunate assassination since Sadat's or Huffpo's efforts to exploit, nay, to engender a polemic response from the candidates by tastelessly headlining an alleged dispute was the most irresponsible. The only positive from this post was a lower echelon response from the Clinton camp that such a dispute was at inappropriate. That should have been so obvious that it could have been called a truism

Obama is an ass. I couldn't be more fed up with a democrat candidate. I'm going to have to hold my nose to vote in the general if this calculating, "present"-voting, use'any-dirty-to-smear, tabsentee senator gets the nomination.

The slimy Mr. Axelrod has just iced the cake for choir boy Obama. Is Mr. Axelrod applying for nasty Karl Rove's old job? Shows just how naive they both are. What a tasteless and stupid implication. But to our detriment that is how ugly rumors are planted. God help this country if this rookie should attain the White House. First he would have to ask directions to the men's room before giving one of his "I alone will change Washington and the world" speeches. Remember what I said in the Illinois state senate? Only Biden and Clinton have shown statemanship today relating to this tragedy.

This really shows what a low person Obama is. He didn't vote one way or the other because he wasn't in office. He undoubtedly would have voted to go to war because he's so Republican lite on everything.

It's just ugly that he would blame Clinton for some pol getting assassinated in Pakistan. That's worse than the Swift Boaters smearing Kerry or Limbaugh smearing Bill. Down with Barack Obama.

Saw Pat Buchanan on Hardball. He
was pretty hard on Obama. No he
was REALLY hard. Obama scares
the republicans very much. They
know even if Hillary wins she loses
the congress. Then gop stymies
her for 4 years. After that we get a
republican president, again.

All of the frontrunners Reps & Dems, are or will use this trajedy as an opportunity to show they have the right stuff to deal with a nervous electorate. All Obama said was the he was saddened by her assassination, and extented his condolences to the Pakastani people and/or her supporters. He didn't politicize squat. Now, Axelrod should have followed suit, and declined answering a provocative question by a lead-thirsty reporter. But when everyone else is posturing, he made a choice to take an untimely swing at Hill. The more important aspect is Obama predicted that this unrest would occur as a result of our heavy occupation of Iraq. I trust this man's judgement, fueled by his openess to listen to other smart people.

So, all you Obamaphobes...Go ahead and use this as another opportunity to bash with your exaggerated claims and juvenilish name-calling.

WOW! Big surprize... Clinton and Obama exploiting a tragedy.

Richardson stated the obvious. Kucinich has the dignity to stay above it.

Let's let the ADULTS in this country have some influence here.
