Timing Is Everything: New Giuliani Ad May Benefit From Bhutto

Today Rudy Giuliani dropped a new presidential ad, in which he finally — and unsurprisingly — plays the 9/11 card. Giuliani leads with Sept. 11th, framing it in broader terms of America as a beacon of liberty through the world wars, the cold war, and the ultimate last stand against forces of evil. Here is the key graf, set against patriotic images from history — Iwo Jima, shuttle launching, firefighters at Ground Zero, general wartime flag-raising — all intercut with close-ups on Rudy's face, looking lined and weathered, but resolute:

So, the Islamic terrorists would make a terrible mistake if they confuse our democracy for weakness. Our democracy means we disagree with each other, but when you come and try and take away from us our freedom, when you try and come here and kill our people, we're one and we're going to stand up to you and we're going to prevail.

The ad frames Rudy as the candidate who understands what is at stake in the war on terror, the national security candidate who will stand up to those who would threaten the American way of life — and has. And what a day to launch it, as Benazir Bhutto is assassinated in Pakistan. Bhutto's assassination — likely by al Qaeda extremists — is global news today as Pakistan has erupted in response and suddenly that nation is coming back into focus as one hell of a global destabilizer. Suddenly, the focus on the campaign trail is back to national security — which just happens to be Rudy's extreme comfort zone. (No doubt Rudy has his fingers crossed for the type of bounce President Bush received in 2004 when the Osama bin Laden tape dropped days before the election.) The ad will air nationally on cable and in Florida and New Hampshire (note the absence of Iowa, which does not constitute a Giuliani comfort zone).

In addition to linking himself to 9/11 and standing up to terrorism, as is his wont, Giuliani re-frames the post-9/11 generation flatteringly as the descendants of the "Greatest Generation" of World War II (giving Tom Brokaw a nice blurb in the process). Here, Giuliani shoots the current war on terror through the loving, soft-focus lens of history, and makes fighting the war on terror about as American as apple pie. It's a deliberate construction, obviously, but in light of recent events it's one that will surely resonate differently now. Bet he's kicking himself for skipping Iowa.

Unfortunately this is the patriotic club that works so exceedingly well on many Americans.

"We're awesome. Our awesomeness brings tears to our eyes. We're free. Our love of freedom makes us righteous. Hey, they're attacking our freedom!"

Add violins and it's enough to convince us. Yessir, Rudi, we're awesome and free! Confirming our most cherished self-delusion makes you right. On everything.

Never mind that our awesomeness hasn't come forth in the face of real attacks on our freedom - attacks by the policies Rudi supports. These are too nuanced, too complex. Hell, we don't know what Article IV of the Constitution says, or those 10 Amendments. You may take them away as long as you don't take away our FREEDOM. Let's vote for Rudi, the Protector of our Grand Delusion!

Rudy is a vile ASSHOLE who only cares about getting elected so he can further enrich himself and his cronies, just like the current occupant of the White House. Another jerk who cares nothing about minorities or the poor.

How is it that a polarizing manipulator like Rudy can go from mayor to possibly being a president? He likes to trumpet that he was in charge of NYC, but NYC is not New York state. Under Rudy's "leadership", just imagine what he would do with FEMA. He couldn't even get working radios for the NYFD. If you think Katrina was bad under Bush, what do you think would happen under Rudy? Who would get the blame? Who would get the no-bid contracts?

It would be more of the same and more of it!

Nice and subtle: Christian cross at ~0:40. Hucklebee has to be jealous of this degree of sophistication and effectiveness.

I say bullwicky!

George W. Bush has been surrounded by "years" of this so-called EXPERIENCED personnel and look where they"ve taken us. President Bush himself has now had over 7 years of foreign policy experience and look at the mistakes he continues to make on a daily basis.

Experience is sort of like education. It"s nice to have, you can always say, "Been there, Done That"; but most likely, you"ll never use or you will forget the training and lessons you were given.

Just to show you how experience can and cannot help you. Governor Richardson said today after hearing about Bhutto"s death, that Pakistan's President Pervez Musharraf should immediately step down from his office. On Countdown, Chris Dodd, said this would be a terrible mistake. We should remember that Pakistan has nuclear capability " it would be very dangerous to ask Musharraf to step down, not knowing at this time who would replace him. Dodd also recommended that the upcoming election be postponed in Pakistan to allow the Bhutto party to regroup. President Bush said the opposite, he wants the election continue. These three men have decades of experience. Who"s right?

Some of our most famous American"s never experience war but ended up being some of our national heroes. Some never had experience in a political office, but ended up performing some pretty fantasic maneuvers while in office.

To get down and dirty, I"ve seen some pretty "experienced" parents really screw up on the parenting of their kids and grandkids.

What the man or woman has as a vision for America and her fellow allies around the world, what they feel in their hearts is the right course to take, how they approach a problem (with careful thought instead of hate or fear) and their past judgements " along with what experiences they had over the years " are the true things to look at.

Even Voters must have "all of the above" to make the right decisions on voting day. Nobody is perfect or has all the answers

What an Opportunist.
He reaffirms that every time he opens his mouth. Regardless if this was made long before yesterday and scheduled to air: He's still using the lives lost and the raw emotions of 9/11 to weasel his way into the WH.
I am constatnly offended by his attempts to manipulate using gutteral responses as his justification.
We are past it and are now in the fight for our democracy- EYES WIDE OPEN!!
He's be best to drop out of the limelight, lest we turn our attention more towards him personally and professionally.
BEWARE OF WHAT YOU WISH FOR RUDY- IT MIGHT JUST BITE YOU IN THE ASS!

We know Rudy is a sleaze bucket, bla, bla, bla..

But what I don't understand and this goes for Biden as well but here it is; days away from the Iowa caucus and on Huffington Post's Political tab there are no headline stories on Dennis Kucinich, not one.

Huffington Post I thought was a liberal based site, sure all ideas are vetted here but shouldn't all the democratic candidates get equal time so that people can make an informed choice? Shouldn't at least a left leaning site try to be fair and equal?

Here we go again, it is 28 Dec 07 and the headline count is in (includes pictures if not named in headline and includes any mention in headline):

CLINTON - 3 headlines
EDWARDS - 3 headlines
OBAMA - 3 headlines
RICHARDSON - 1 headline
RUDY - 2 headlines
ROMNEY - 2 headlines
HUCKABEE - 3 headlines
THOMPSON - 2 headlines
RON PAUL - 2 headlines

How is it that there is not a whisper about Kucinich - his opinion is just as valuable on the issues of the day and the election as anyone else listed and should have at least as much attention as the Republican candidates.

I am tired of Huff's snub, I like this site normally but I am very disappointed to realize that the Huff is more like the corporate media than the other liberal sites that are out there.

It is a shame. Would it really be so hard to find a story on all the candidates?

Sigh.

Strength through Peace - Kucinich '08

my conspiracy theory:

first of all, it seems that a key conspirator in her assassination was Bhutto herself. she attended a planned rally and then rode in a car standing through a sunroof.

second, listening to this interview from Nov. 2, it sounds like she was not just against the terrorists, but the figures in the Pakistan government who "organize and finance" them. she calls it "the poisoned cake."

I think the people of Pakistan (especially on the extreme side) have been duped into thinking Bhutto was an American puppet. on the contrary, she was all about exposing the entire web of Al Qaeda finances and organizational support. a nuclear situation.

Did anybody catch Morning Joe today? He and his loyal minion Mika Brezhinsky wasted no time to conflate the Bhutto assasination with a "need" to vote for Rudy Guiliani for President. Mika even had the NERVE to call him the "hero of 9-11" That made my blood boil. No Mika, it's the firefighters who rushed into the towers without benefit of communication equipment that could have saved their lives who are the heroes, NOT the guy wearing a dust mask walking around pointing at things with a camera crew and entourage. And who's to blame for the firefighters not having those communcation equipment items? None other than your vaunted anti-hero, Guiliani.

They are so nakedly partisan it's sickening. Scarborough was almost giddy that people are going to get "dumb and scared" once again because Republicans feast on that like vampires for votes.

That show REALLY needs to get cancelled.

Al Qaeda? Why would Al Qaeda assassinate Bhutto?

Musshariff ordered the assassination of Bhutto, not Osama. Does Guiliani think we are stupid here?

Of course the Guiliani base still thinks Saddam Hussein and 19 Iraqis flew the airplanes into the twin towers of the world trade center even after Osama took credit. They might beleive anything. They might beleive Hillary has Bhutto assassinated, worth a try to make the charge Rudy Kazootie.

For bloggers who want to refresh their memories of what Joe Biden wrote on two occassions on Pakistan on Huffington Post on November 6th and November 8th - two months ago, here are the links.

It is worth reviewing to see how prophetic Biden was and right on the money considering how today's tragedy has worked out.

Here we go again! The terrorists that killed her will be on our dirt next! Fear Fear Fear!!! This wingnut Rudy has been using 9/11 and how wonderful he was as his cornerstone and now he has another incident to wave his flag with his name on it. Not the US flag. Rudy used everything that was going on before he became mayor of New York to show he man of steel persona. He didn't provide those who died in the towers who worked for his city the correct equipment and he was in bed and made money off the radio deal that helped kill some. Poor man but his delusion gives more energy to the fears people hold.

Well now having finished throwing up I can respond to this ad. Rudy unable to run his campaign
on his liberal views or his disgusting lifestyle or his lack of preparedness before 9/11 plays the fear card. Rudy wishes us to believe that only Saint Rudy of 9/11 can deliver us from evil -Amen
I"m surprised that the "Il Duce" wanna be didn"t have one of his minions Photo-Shop his ugly puss over the faces of the "Real" heroes in the images. "Rudy Walks on the Moon !!" "Rudy Raises the flag at Iwo Jima!!" "Rudy Wins Gold at the Olympics !!" err... strike that last one We Know what Rudy thinks of Afro- Americans, no Rudy"s ugly face on Jesse Owens. I wonder how many of the Fire Fighters shown in the footage from 9/11 love all that Rudy did for them and don"t mind him using their images to promote his unholy campaign. Though we should be thankful we don't have to endure Rudy in drag as "Rosie the Riveter"

Absofreakinglutely disgusting, but not at all unsurprising. This is exactly what Naomi Klein's Shock Doctrine describes; take advantage of some disaster and while the people are distracted, steal their lives, liberties, and happiness. Then be sure to kick them a few extra times while they're down. HUFFPOST, Please don't let this nonsense go by without comment!
