Obama

Clinton, Iowa -- Barack Obama unveiled his closing act in the run-up to the January 3 caucuses and it's a heady mix of soaring promises, inspirational vision and a tightly targeted, one-two attack on his closest rivals, Hillary Clinton and John Edwards.

"This is a defining moment," the Illinois senator told an enthusiastic audience of 300 in the Washington Middle School gym in this eastern Iowa river town late Friday afternoon. "We cannot wait to fix our schools, we cannot wait to stop climate change, we cannot wait to get universal health care... and we cannot wait to bring this war in Iraq to an end."

While Obama sounded his now standard themes of "hope" and "change you can believe in," he simultaneously sharpened his direct attacks on Clinton and Edwards, reverting to a defiant tone bordering on anger.

Obama's newly focused closing argument comes as he, and the other major candidates, are frenetically leap-frogging across the state, making five, six or more stump appearances a day. All three top candidates are running dead heats in most polls.

"The real gamble, the risk, the real risk in this election is playing the same Washington game with the same players and expecting a different result," Obama said in a direct riposte to the Clinton campaign. Two weeks ago Bill Clinton warned a national TV audience that nominating Obama would be a "roll of the dice" on America's future.

Obama continued his thinly veiled assault on Hillary Clinton, sarcastically deriding her repeated campaign claim that her experience trumps his message of change. "We don't need someone to work the system better because the system doesn't work for us," Obama said to a swell of applause. "We don't need someone who says, ' I know how to work the game,' because the game plan isn't working."

Rival John Edwards also came under a withering attack from Obama. "Some people say, 'Well, Obama talks a good game, but he's not angry enough, he's too conciliatory,'" he said, referring to a new stump speech by Edwards claiming the powerful must be confronted and not conciliated. "I don't need lectures about how to bring about change because I've spent my life bringing about change," Obama said in response to his own rhetorical query. "I turned down the big jobs to do community organizing in Chicago. I turned down the big money law firms to be a civil rights lawyer. I took on the lobbyists in the state legislature in Illinois."

"We don't need more heat in Washington," he added. "We need more light."

In these final six days of the Iowa campaign none of the major candidates are mentioning each other by name but are instead speaking in near-transparent code about each other. They are finely honing their messages, straining to starkly underscore their differences with each other. John Edwards has ratcheted up his economic populism with a new stump speech denouncing what he called "the profiteers" dominating America. Clinton has been doubling-down on her experience card. And now Obama has stiffened his tone, claiming to be the only reliable agent of change.

But Obama also took pains to burnish his credentials as a potentially strong commander-in-chief. Former Air Force General Tony McPeak warmed up the crowd saying that Obama possessed all the key qualities of a top military leader: reliability, authenticity, good judgment and intelligence.

"We've been conducing a colossal experiment for the last six years to see if it matters very much if the guy in the White House isn't that smart," McPeak said to whoops of laughter.. "And," he said, "the results are in."

New Players? Obama campaign is employing almost as many as Bill Clinton's former advisors as Hillary Clinton's campaign

Feb 6th should go down as one of the MOST awkward mornings of this Century.
Not so much for Republicans, I doubt they will have rallied behind one of their Pack of Losers before their laugh riot Convention in Minneapolis restroom...er...Convention Center.
No, it's Edwards, Obama, and Clinton who will be looking like two oscar nominees, and one oscar winner. Nobody is gonna offer a job on winners campaign, (too much bitterness and slashing to the bone for that.) But DNC and DLC big bosses will insist on warm congratulations to the winner...which will be through CLENCHED TEETH at BEST.

In light of Bhutto's assassination and the tense situation in Pakistan, this election calls for critical thinking, experience, a steady hand & wisdom. Hopefully, in 10-15 years, Obama will have all that. But for now, Joe Biden comes to mind.
A CRISIS INTRUDES ON IOWA (excerpt)
The Washington Post
By E. J. Dionne Jr.
Friday, December 28, 2007
DES MOINES -- The assassination of Benazir Bhutto came as a brutal reminder of the gravity of the decision Iowa's voters will be rendering in their caucuses next Thursday night. Its impact may be felt most powerfully by Democrats who have been thinking less about issues than about the style of leadership they are seeking from their next president.
All of a sudden, the politicians' endless loop of television advertisements took on a somber significance. During coverage of Bhutto's murder on "Good Morning America," up popped a Hillary Clinton ad where the message over grave music is that the moment "demands a leader with a steady hand who will weather the storms." No kidding.
A short while later, a Joe Biden commercial looks as if it had been produced precisely for this moment. "We don't have to imagine the crises the next president will face," intones a very serious voice. Indeed not.
Clinton, of course, is hoping that the chaos in Pakistan will fortify her relentless arguments about the importance of experience. Biden's refusal to back away from his insistence that this should be a foreign policy election seems shrewder now than it did last week. Biden has been warning not for months but for years that the United States faces its gravest challenge in Pakistan.
The images from Pakistan ratified that Biden was no Chicken Little. He noted yesterday that he had "twice urged President Musharraf to provide better security for Ms. Bhutto and other political leaders." Biden was suddenly relevant -- to television bookers for sure, but also, perhaps, to voters....

I hope Obama supporters are pleased with their candidate's placement Thursday night, but in the even they're not, I'll offer the following:

~He spent more than any other Dem.
~He is a Senator from a neighboring state.
~He followed advice from David Axelrod and went negative.
~He was statistically tied in third for weeks.
~In order for candidates to win, supporters have to go vote.

I hope Edwards takes Iowa, and Im not even an Edwards supporter.

I'd like to see Edwards and Huckabee, actually.

Because it would be fun to watch the conservative "national security" punditry choke on their own tongues.

They'll be red-faced and sputtering with rage.

Plus, Huckabee is a lunatic.

Here is a Daily Kos post favorable to both Obama and Edwards:

"Folks, this is a plea. Look at our two attractive young candidates with ideals and hope for the future. Look at the revolution they will be able to unleash with democratic majorities in Congress! Don't let this opportunity slip by by once again."

Strategy session:

Obama: I'm going to run a positive campaign.
Handlers and pundits: We think you should go negative.
Obama: OK.

there's a lot of rhetoric going on in the comments today. democracy in action, etc.

i think we should throw away the Bush equivalency statement though. can't we all agree that nobody=Bush? I could run the country better. My little sister could run the country better. almost anyone could run the country better, even previous presidential fuckups. Reagan could have run the country better. so please stop, that shit is obnoxious.

Disclaimer: Obama is my second choice.

But my concern at this time is the critical degree to which his campaign is dependent upon the mythical "first time caucus goer" who never seems to materialize.

Should he win in Iowa, it will be because he brought in many new people to the process and that bodes well for his campaign moving ahead.

His victory will signify more than a good finish in Iowa, it will signify the START of something really special - perhaps even something of HISTORICAL significance.

If we really cared about electing the person who would make the best president, we would all vote for Biden. This is stupid.

One-two punch? Hardly. More like a featherweight dancing around the ring. The rhetoric is just empty. Like "I spent my life bringing about change" because I turned down the big jobs and the big money and took on the lobbyists. Problem is there is not much record of this. Obama's records in Illinois apparently disappeared. Turning down a job is not a record of bringing about change. Part time legislator, lawyer who never tried or won a case and community organizer are not strong enough credentials.

Obama is a queen bee and right now we need to nominate and elect one of the worker bees like Edwards or Dodd or Biden who have done the heavy lifting and hard work their entire lives.
