Clinton, Iowa -- Barack Obama unveiled his closing act in the run-up to the January 3 caucuses and it's a heady mix of soaring promises, inspirational vision and a tightly targeted, one-two attack on his closest rivals, Hillary Clinton and John Edwards.

"This is a defining moment," the Illinois senator told an enthusiastic audience of 300 in the Washington Middle School gym in this eastern Iowa river town late Friday afternoon. "We cannot wait to fix our schools, we cannot wait to stop climate change, we cannot wait to get universal health care... and we cannot wait to bring this war in Iraq to an end."

While Obama sounded his now standard themes of "hope" and "change you can believe in," he simultaneously sharpened his direct attacks on Clinton and Edwards, reverting to a defiant tone bordering on anger.

Obama's newly focused closing argument comes as he, and the other major candidates, are frenetically leap-frogging across the state, making five, six or more stump appearances a day. All three top candidates are running dead heats in most polls.

"The real gamble, the risk, the real risk in this election is playing the same Washington game with the same players and expecting a different result," Obama said in a direct riposte to the Clinton campaign. Two weeks ago Bill Clinton warned a national TV audience that nominating Obama would be a "roll of the dice" on America's future.

Obama continued his thinly veiled assault on Hillary Clinton, sarcastically deriding her repeated campaign claim that her experience trumps his message of change. "We don't need someone to work the system better because the system doesn't work for us," Obama said to a swell of applause. "We don't need someone who says, ' I know how to work the game,' because the game plan isn't working."

Rival John Edwards also came under a withering attack from Obama. "Some people say, 'Well, Obama talks a good game, but he's not angry enough, he's too conciliatory,'" he said, referring to a new stump speech by Edwards claiming the powerful must be confronted and not conciliated. "I don't need lectures about how to bring about change because I've spent my life bringing about change," Obama said in response to his own rhetorical query. "I turned down the big jobs to do community organizing in Chicago. I turned down the big money law firms to be a civil rights lawyer. I took on the lobbyists in the state legislature in Illinois."

"We don't need more heat in Washington," he added. "We need more light."

In these final six days of the Iowa campaign none of the major candidates are mentioning each other by name but are instead speaking in near-transparent code about each other. They are finely honing their messages, straining to starkly underscore their differences with each other. John Edwards has ratcheted up his economic populism with a new stump speech denouncing what he called "the profiteers" dominating America. Clinton has been doubling-down on her experience card. And now Obama has stiffened his tone, claiming to be the only reliable agent of change.

But Obama also took pains to burnish his credentials as a potentially strong commander-in-chief. Former Air Force General Tony McPeak warmed up the crowd saying that Obama possessed all the key qualities of a top military leader: reliability, authenticity, good judgment and intelligence.

"We've been conducing a colossal experiment for the last six years to see if it matters very much if the guy in the White House isn't that smart," McPeak said to whoops of laughter.. "And," he said, "the results are in."

I'd say this is a good one-two punch. I support Edwards, but Obama is on the mark with these comments.

Well, I for one STILL am not sure who I will vote for. For me, I like all 3 top contenders and, I like Biden. This is one election that I could pretty much support any of them. However, even though I like Clinton, I am leaning toward Obama or maybe Edwards. Too many people hate Hillary (although I'm not one of them). I fear that we may get stuck with another Republican if Hillary gets the nomination. Also I think there may be a burnout (of sorts) having a Bush/Clinton/ Bush Clinton Administration.
Anyway, I look at the mess of an Administration we have now and figure it couldn't possibly get any worse.
No matter the turnout, I'm looking forward to following the results of this election, with the high hope of course, that a Dem wins.

O wants to enter the system so badly that he'll say anything about anyone to get in.

He'll pretend to be anything, just to get in the system he derides. He's a wannabe.

He's a Wannabe Clinton, a wannabe President. The imitator who hypocritically talks about change.

Funny how even as so many rail against the media bias toward the "top three", nobody bothers to comment on any of the underdogs who might actually bring some real change to the system.

All three of these people have so much baggage it's difficult to believe they'd accomplish anything if elected. Edwards would probably be the best bet, but they'll hang him for being "lawyer-friendly". As though a thousand lawyers command the same kind of influence as even one of Obama or Clinton's corporate backers.

Kucinich probably makes the most sense, but who's going to listen to him? He's short, and he looks kind of goofy and he's got a gorgeous wife all the male media wankers want to screw (and some of the female ones, too, no doubt). How can simply being an honest populist overcome those three strikes?

Obama is also dealing with an onslaught of Edwards ads that misrepresent his health care plan and pretend to be from unions. Fact is, they're being paid for in larage part by Edwards' lawyer friends, and the 527s were organized and run by his campaign staff.

It's the same sh*t Edwards pulled with the charity scam between elections - the guy sure knows how to play the edge in legal matters, especially when it comes to getting around campaign finance laws.

At any rate, Obama should take a tough stand against Edwards' hypocrisy. Obama's not allowing 527 ads on his behalf. Edwards said he wouldn't, but he is - his staff, his friends money, even his smiling face right in the ad.

Anyone who thinks Edwards wouldn't be taking lobbyist money if they would give it to him is very sadly mistaken.

Edwards is a Hypocrite. Capital H.

"Obama Unpacks Closing One-Two Punch"

You know if HuffPo's going to constantly have orgasms over Obama's empty campaign the least you could do is have them in private as it's kind of tiresome and nauseating to watch.

His entire campaign has been built on slamming others and dreams of la la land. Always making an effort to avoid EVER talking about facts or his qualifications.

What bullshit. You people are giving him a free ride through this campaign.

With every freaking headline on here you take the opportunity to play up Obama like he's some worthy god, never scrutinizing him, while bashing Hillary with every headline you can think of, and virtually ignoring Edwards altogether.

When some bastard on the right wins the election against Obama, we'll remember who to thank for this catastrophe.

In his closing remarks, Barack Obama outlines the exact reasons I'm voting for him. I'm tired of the gridlock in America. I'm tired of the pandering to special interests. But most of all, I'm tired of watching my party become it's enemy.

I'm tired of the same childish and irrelevant talking points designed to kill, not encourage discussion; the same blind obedience to talking points with no supporting facts; the same abusive and irrational invective from Clintonistas that spews from Limbaugh's minion.

It's not a coincidence that Hillary seems just as divisive, short sighted and secretive as George Bush. She represents the opposite side of the same coin:

Entitlement.

Barack Hussein Obama is a self-made man, who rose to the same scholastic and political heights as Bush, and Hillary, but he went much farther. He went on to America; in teaching constitutional law; the Illinois legislature; and finally the streets of Chicago. His experience is his own. His vision is unique. His ability to work with others is legend.

There is only one thing standing in the way of his becoming the 44th President of the United States: the ability of voters to exercise an equal share of judgement, vision, and courage. About every fifty years (roughly a generation) America gets it right. Now is that time.

Marc Cooper has been an astute commentator and continues to inform the public. Thanks, Marc. I think the "poisoning" that Obama spoke of early in his campaign is real. Do you think he is only referring to right-wing lunatics? Is he only talking about someone else?

An argument containing f--- is no more convincing, nor is personal slander of a candidate's spouse. And a lack of historical knowledge is not something to be proud of.

Make your choices based on policy, substance and depth of character...the candidate's AND yours.

My choice is Obama. He is a clear thinking, level-headed leader who has a consistently pro-worker viewpoint with a unifying message.

You know all my life I have wanted a woman president of the United States of America.

I thought Hillary Rodham would be that woman

when she came and saved Bill Clinton during

"G. Flowers-gate." But the more I got to know her.....well.

Hillary would have won me over when she declared her candidacy if she had demonstrated

purpose and conviction. She reminded me of the fateful moment that Kerry could have won the Presidency, had he said: "Health-Care must be a right, not a privilege" He punted and showed how lame he was with what he said.

He lost at that moment. Hillary comes across the same way.

A woman president someday....uuummmhow about

Michelle Obama?....there is an idea for you.

Hillary Clinton stood up and said that she is against Iran building nuclear weapons.
Where was Hillary when the Clinton administration was providing the technology for Pakistan"s nuclear program. Now the world is threatened by instability in a Pakistan armed with nuclear weapons.

Why then did the Clinton administration provide the technology for Pakistan to build the bomb and guided missiles. Is it because Pakistan was our friend and we did not want them to drift towards Russia, well this was never going to happen since Pakistan and Russia were never on friendly terms.

Bill Clinton gave Pakistan the bomb, now the world has to live with an unstable regime with nuclear weapons and missiles.

"I don't need lectures about how to bring about change because I've spent my life bringing about change," Obama said in response
-----------

Ooooh! Cocky!

Mr. Obama, I for one don't really give a shit with what changes you brought to your life.

Let's examine what changes you have been able to make as Senator on important issues facing our country.

None.

You have accomplished nothing. Zilch. Zero. Nada.

Now, that settled, I don't dislike you. You are a good candidate. You have some good ideas. And some bad ones.

Most importantly, don't get too fucking cocky. You haven't earned that right. Yet.
