I Like ItI Don’t Like It

Eldridge, Iowa - Barack Obama and John Edwards might want to change the world. But Hillary Clinton wants to protect you against it.

That's the unmistakable message that Senator Clinton is pounding out in this final phase of the campaign to capture the Iowa caucuses. In a world brimming with danger and uncertainty, she argues as she blitzes the Hawkeye State, there's no time to waste daydreaming about pie-in-the-sky promises of reform.

Instead, the American people must choose a leader ready to immediately start fixing the problems that already exist and one who is immediately ready to face the inevitable and "unpredictable" crises looming right over the horizon. And that would be Clinton.

"We know some of the challenges that await the next president," Clinton told a packed crowd at a junior high school Saturday morning. "But no matter how much we know, we can't possibly anticipate all the problems."

The razzamatazz cheerleading, sloganeering style that punctuated her earlier campaign events has now been replaced by a sedate, somber, even grave tone coming from the podium. Clinton never raised her voice, never elevated the mood, and at times sounded like a concerned, responsible parent telling the kids that something terrible was taking place outside the door but not to worry because Mom and Dad - or in this case Hill and Bill- would take care of it.

Becoming president, she said in a hushed tone, is "an awesome responsibility. And it was thrown into relief with the events last Thursday with the assassination of Benazir Bhutto."

"When that person gets into the Oval Office," she said, referring to the next president, "there will be a stack of problems already waiting: a war, another war to resolve, an economy that is faltering, housing values that have dropped 6% in some parts of the country...all of those millions, 47 million of them uninsured."

As is now customary among her leading rivals, Clinton didn't utter the words Obama or Edwards - the two candidates now in a dogfight for the mantle of change- but she drew a bright shining line between her position and theirs. They are the dreamers. She is the doer. All three are locked in a dead heat to win next Thursday's first-in-the-nation caucus.

"Everybody running is talking about change," Clinton said, sporting a royal blue blazer over black slacks. "Some people think you bring change by demanding it," she said, referring to Edwards. "Some people think you bring it by hoping for it," she continued in a clear reference to Obama. "And some people think you bring it by working very, very hard everyday. And that's what I've been doing for 35 years."

Even the name of this last-minute, multi-stop, week-long closing swing through Iowa carries the ultra-utilitarian title of "Big Problems, Real Solutions - Time to Pick a President."

Clinton's pragmatic pitch was well-received by the disproportionately elderly audience. And while Obama rallies are fueled with hard rock and Edwards events incline toward country fare, Clinton's rally was preceded by a performance by an accordion-led trio playing the U.S. Marine Corps hymn.

"I went to see Obama give a speech last night and he was inspiring," said Louise Mooney, a Maryland physician volunteering for the Clinton Iowa campaign and who attended Saturday's rally. "Obama is more conceptual. But Hillary's more of a leader, she's more nitty-gritty, more X-Y-Z."

While Clinton has been chided by her rivals for representing the past, she unabashedly touted the "1990s as a time of jobs and prosperity," and joked that "the 90s aren't exactly ancient history." She lauded the accomplishments of the Clinton administration including the 1996 abolition of the federal welfare safety net saying, "You know, the best way to help somebody is prepare them to get a job."

Much as her husband often did as a sitting president, she eschewed any sweeping promises of radical change and, instead, ticked off a long list of bite-sized program applets she would tackle as president: increased Pell grants, expanded tax credits for college tuition, and universal day care for 4 year olds. "And I'm going to eliminate those financial aid forms that parents have to fill out that take hours and hours," she promised.

"The economy was in great shape when her husband was in office," said a woman supporter in a green union T-shirt. "I think she learned a lot from him."

I voted for Bill twice, but I also was very upset with the whole Monica saga. Both with Bill's lie and the Rethugs attempt to impeach him. I have also investigated Bill's liason with Poppy Bu$h during the CIA drug running out of Mena, Arkansas in the 80's. No wonder they are so tight nowadays. Now this! Sorry Bill, but Hillary has flunked the test. She failed in the Senate in her most important vote, the Iraq war resolution. So did Kerry, Biden, Dodd and Edwards, but at least they have shown remorse for that vote. Then recently, Hillary voted with all the other hawks in the Kyl/Lieberman bill about Iran. I used to be a Democrat, but am now an Independent due to the actions, or INACTIONS of Nancy Pelosi and the gang. I'm still not sure who I will vote for. It may be John Edwards. It may be Ron Paul. Maybe somebody else. But NEVER Hillary!

Everything Hillary is saying is correct, people
may not like her, but what she is saying is
correct. The last thing we need is anything
"trainee" in the White House. We have all seen
what the current "trainee" has done. Obama
is an empty suit, a phony and he has LIED.
His stump speech has him raising his voice and
saying, "There will be NO LOBBYISTS in MY
WHITE HOUSE," and the crowd cheers. He has
now CORRECTED THAT STATEMENT with - "Lobbyists
will NOT DOMINATE MY WHITE HOUSE." If Hillary
said that, the media would stone her and attack
her non-stop 24/7. Obama also LIED when he told
the people of Illinois, "I will NOT RUN FOR
PRESIDENT in 2008."
He quotes President Bill Clinton's experience
when he ran for President, but again OBAMA
LIES - he leaves out the FACT - Bill Clinton
was an extremely successful Governor.
Obama attacks Hillary on her vote for Iran,
but he didn't bother to come back to the Senate
to vote. He was too busy getting his picture
taken. It's clear - it could not be clearer
how this guy is even on the stage with these
other candidates is amazing. And I am not a
Hillary supporter, but fair is fair - and the
truth matters, the facts matter. Hillary is
a leader, she has the experience, she is an
adult and she would make a very good President.

Bill Clinton is dangerously irresponsible in his shameless promotion of HIS "WIFE" as a presidential candidate. This is the ultimate ego trip for Bill: can he get unqualified Mrs. Bill elected.

In this self-serving nepotistic pursuit, Bill Clinton has abdicated the responsibiliies of a former president. Bill deserves to be be ostracized for his attacks on other Democratic candidates in a primary, simply because they oppose his WIFE.

I just want Bill and Hillary to GO AWAY!

Be Afraid, All Right! The Clinton political machine is liable to do ANYTHING to win! How many people have died in their wake? Word was that JFK, Jr. was planning to run for the Senate seat in New York; the result would have been a landslide for him; Clinton would have none of that.

If Hillary wins the nomination, she'll have to do a flip flop because she is less experienced than all the Republican candidates and Bloomberg should he enter as an independent.

I don't agree with Bill that you never look beyond the race you're in. Both Bill and Hill are pander bears who end up standing for nothing because they keep trying to change reality and end up looking like the liars that they are.

All I really know is that if a great candidate does not get into office and make the correct changes for America's future, young people in this country are going to feel it painfully for the rest of their lives. A job at Walmart doesn't exactly spell the American Dream with no offense to people who do work at walmart (minus the store manager and the corporate crew in little rock). How do you buy a home, a new car, have decent healthcare and raise a family on those wages?

Hillary is a centrist and in the political spectrum she has lived in, that means she is rethug-lite. For at least the last thirty years, America has leaned right, giving up on the Great Society that Roosevelt started and reverting to the 'conservatism' that Reagan fronted for.

Today we see the clear failures of the GOP plan to shift wealth to the top and let it trickle down. When combined with globalization, that phony plan became a disaster.

To get back to the middle ground where the middle class benefits, we need to push back corporatism and promote populism and that is not Hillary!!!

I definitely agree that Hillary has lots of experience.

That is quite my concern, actually.

It's important to look at the experiences she's had.

Another dollop of drivel for the Hillary haters. As if it's going to make an ounce of difference. She's going to be the nominee despite the rantings of the Freepers on the right and Naderites on the far left. As Koestler said what's the difference.

Hillary has had so many messages and campaign slogans in this race. One day it's "Let the conversation begin", the next day she's "experienced". Then the polls show that voters consider change more important than experience, so Hillary morphs into the "change agent". Please. This isn't leadership, it's a marketing frenzy to disguise Hillary as being stronger, better, with less fat and 20% more fiber, hoping that voters will once again buy the same old crap of the status quo.

Hillary is the next president. She will work tirelessly and vigorously and will bring America back to the respected position we once knew. Be as cynical as you wish and as hateful as you desire, but she is the only candidate who is not afraid of the Repubs. She gets lambasted because of Bill, but so many of her critics, including those here today, cannot say what she has done to deserve anyone's ire. She has endured more investigation than any other candidate and fully vetted. What is all the blather about?...............

There is nothing Bill Clinton would do for a buck, ultimately he alianed himself with the now President Musharraf of Pakistan, I invite you to read more.

Why was President Clinton so determined to crush Pakistan because of an unpaid bill to some Little Rock company. This was not just any company. But that wasn’t much. More important, Entergy and its partners, the Riady Family of Indonesia had just paid about half a million dollars to Hillary’s old Rose Law Firm partner Webster Hubbell. Odd that, hiring Hubbell. Why would Entergy pay big bucks to Hubbell as a "consultant" when he was on his way to jail for a felony. Hubbell was doing time because he refused to testify against Ms. Rodham.

Did President Clinton know about the payment to Hubbell? Clinton denied it to the press, but under oath, to the FBI, Bill said he, "wouldn’t be surprised" if the Riadys told him about the payoff to Hubbell in one of Bill’s several private meetings with them in the Oval Office.

With Pakistan’s army in control of the nation’s infrastructure, and acting as guarantor of payment to the US and UK power giants, General Musharraf’s final takeover of the entire government nine months later - a "surprise" coup to the Western press - was, a forgone conclusion. And the Clintons, complicit, like Bush today, could say little.

Just months before he left office President Clinton paid a sudden visit to Musharraf. Congressional Democrats were stunned. Musharraf had quickly shown himself to be a Taliban-loving, unbalanced dictator who violated US treaty terms by exploding a nuke and threatening to incinerate our ally India. Notably, the Ambassador with Clinton made payments to the electric companies a top item on his agenda.

Favors done; favors repaid. Nothing new under the sun, but it’s a dangerous game, Senator Clinton.

I think Hillary's final strategy, "Be Afraid," is right on target, except that it applies to her. She's absolutely terrified of having a single, unscripted moment. In what way does this qualify her to be the POTUS? As president, she'd have a lot of unscripted moments, and she'll have to face situations a lot tougher than stump speeches in Iowa.

As a certified conspiracy theorist, I will argue that none of Hillary's claims of accomplishment hold up to close scrutiny. I'm not comparing her to the other candidates but looking at her for her own sake. What constitutes an accomplishment in the eyes of the faithful? I'd sure like to hear your responses.

I suspect 2008 has more to do with 2012, when Jeb Bush will emerge as the Republican front runner.

'Round and 'round we go...
