Hillary's Final Strategy: Be Afraid

Eldridge, Iowa - Barack Obama and John Edwards might want to change the world. But Hillary Clinton wants to protect you against it.

That's the unmistakable message that Senator Clinton is pounding out in this final phase of the campaign to capture the Iowa caucuses. In a world brimming with danger and uncertainty, she argues as she blitzes the Hawkeye State, there's no time to waste daydreaming about pie-in-the-sky promises of reform.

Instead, the American people must choose a leader ready to immediately start fixing the problems that already exist and one who is immediately ready to face the inevitable and "unpredictable" crises looming right over the horizon. And that would be Clinton.

"We know some of the challenges that await the next president," Clinton told a packed crowd at a junior high school Saturday morning. "But no matter how much we know, we can't possibly anticipate all the problems."

The razzamatazz cheerleading, sloganeering style that punctuated her earlier campaign events has now been replaced by a sedate, somber, even grave tone coming from the podium. Clinton never raised her voice, never elevated the mood, and at times sounded like a concerned, responsible parent telling the kids that something terrible was taking place outside the door but not to worry because Mom and Dad - or in this case Hill and Bill- would take care of it.

Becoming president, she said in a hushed tone, is "an awesome responsibility. And it was thrown into relief with the events last Thursday with the assassination of Benazir Bhutto."

"When that person gets into the Oval Office," she said, referring to the next president, "there will be a stack of problems already waiting: a war, another war to resolve, an economy that is faltering, housing values that have dropped 6% in some parts of the country...all of those millions, 47 million of them uninsured."

As is now customary among her leading rivals, Clinton didn't utter the words Obama or Edwards - the two candidates now in a dogfight for the mantle of change- but she drew a bright shining line between her position and theirs. They are the dreamers. She is the doer. All three are locked in a dead heat to win next Thursday's first-in-the-nation caucus.

"Everybody running is talking about change," Clinton said, sporting a royal blue blazer over black slacks. "Some people think you bring change by demanding it," she said, referring to Edwards. "Some people think you bring it by hoping for it," she continued in a clear reference to Obama. "And some people think you bring it by working very, very hard everyday. And that's what I've been doing for 35 years."

Even the name of this last-minute, multi-stop, week-long closing swing through Iowa carries the ultra-utilitarian title of "Big Problems, Real Solutions - Time to Pick a President."

Clinton's pragmatic pitch was well-received by the disproportionately elderly audience. And while Obama rallies are fueled with hard rock and Edwards events incline toward country fare, Clinton's rally was preceded by a performance by an accordion-led trio playing the U.S. Marine Corps hymn.

"I went to see Obama give a speech last night and he was inspiring," said Louise Mooney, a Maryland physician volunteering for the Clinton Iowa campaign and who attended Saturday's rally. "Obama is more conceptual. But Hillary's more of a leader, she's more nitty-gritty, more X-Y-Z."

While Clinton has been chided by her rivals for representing the past, she unabashedly touted the "1990s as a time of jobs and prosperity," and joked that "the 90s aren't exactly ancient history." She lauded the accomplishments of the Clinton administration including the 1996 abolition of the federal welfare safety net saying, "You know, the best way to help somebody is prepare them to get a job."

Much as her husband often did as a sitting president, she eschewed any sweeping promises of radical change and, instead, ticked off a long list of bite-sized program applets she would tackle as president: increased Pell grants, expanded tax credits for college tuition, and universal day care for 4 year olds. "And I'm going to eliminate those financial aid forms that parents have to fill out that take hours and hours," she promised.

"The economy was in great shape when her husband was in office," said a woman supporter in a green union T-shirt. "I think she learned a lot from him."

The 1990's brought the maturation of the Tech Boom and the explosive growth which followed. That is the reason the '90's are remembered as a time of great prosperity. That Tech Boom is now over as is the Housing Boom. Greenspan allowed the creation of Housing Bubble but as millions of people whose houses are now being forclosed on know, the Housing Boom is over. Don't expect any rejuvenation of the 1990's between 2008 and 2012.

dudeE:

1. I stand corrected. Bill Clinton DID sign (pen) into law several progressive measures, as well as measures that have undermined that ideology. Shall I cut and paste the list?
2. The First Lady is not a branch of the Executive.

abdiel:

1. I chose to ignore your challenge re: Obama because I don"t support his views, and therefore I have no reason to promote them.
2. Public Service - Hillary Clinton"s public service has been an exercise in self-service, although there"s no denying her advocacy for women and children.

See? Even the most ignorant of us can come around.

Hillary has taken a lot of hits for certain votes that she has cast, as she should. But there appears to be a double standard when it comes to John Edwards. Like Hillary, Edwards also voted for the Iraq war, voted for the Homeland Security Act, voted for the No Child Left Behind Act, and voted for the (SAFE) Act of 2001 which gave $15 billion in tax breaks to oil companies. Why is Hillary attacked and criticized for her votes, but some are so quick to give Edwards a pass on his votes?

The world is far safer than it ever was. We live longer, are protected by vacinations, antibiotics, surgery, medication and insurance.

What we lack is freedom. Our every movement is increasingly constrained, we are subjected to laws that govern even our social interaction. A woman cursing in her own bathroom was overheard by a neighbor - the police was called in. Our telephone conversations are tapped, our email is no longer private, our civil rights declared caduc.

Many of the lives people live are close to being dead and we are supposed to need one of these mealy-mouthed clowns to keep us safe.
Don't make me laugh!

She Got Iraq Wrong. She got Iran Wrong. She Got Lebanon wrong.

She wants to maintain the status quo in the Israeli Palestinian conflict, which her own husband refered to as the philosophical underpinning of Midde Eastern terrorist recuitment.

She got Healthcare SO wrong that it scuttled any reform for more than a decade after her debacle, and now, as the second highest recipient of Big 7 insurers PAC money in the entire US government, she wants to force EVERYONE to have to buy insurance from the big 7, as though they will magically start to treat people fairly.

She is a sellout hack, and no amount of experience will EVER improve her horrific batting average. WHY WHY WHY would anyone want someone who has already been SO WRONG on so many critically important subjects to be POTUS?

Have others observed how many news photos and news videos have been aired in the past few weeks showing Bill Clinton in the campaign spotlight and foreground and Hillary Clinton in the background? The photo in this news story is IMO just another prime example. Makes one wonder which one is running for President?
I keep hearing all of this talk about HRC's leadership, preparation, experience, etc., but IMO it is becoming more and more obvious that without Bill Clinton, HRC would likely be last in the Dem. polls. It's easy to display a "perception" of Presidential leadership when the former President keeps getting placed in the spotlight and foreground by the MSM and in so many news segments and photos relative to the HRC campaign.
Respectfully, can HRC really stand on her own as a Presidential candidate and potential leader? Seems to me that all of these years of experience HRC touts may be primarily years of simply being around a past President, and not personal experience. I don't see the same experience factor and so called leadership having been displayed while HRC was a Senator. When did she show herself as a proactive leader in the Senate and take assertive and Presidential type leadership positions amongst her peers on the current serious political issues?
IMO Sen. Obama has displayed significantly more tangible leadership type skills and people skills as a US and State Senator and as a Community Organizer, Constitutional Law professor, civil rights lawyer, etc.

Clearly, I'm not a Hillary supporter. IMO her base is comprised of a lighter version of the conservative fear machine. The need to be tough, to be seen as tough, smacks in the face of progress, which can only come about through understanding and a willingness to listen. Probably why I like the unelectable Kucinich - peace is the answer, and Hillary supporters just don't get it.

In addition, Bill Clinton is no progressive, and never has been. Elect one and you get the other.

It's funny Hillary would criticize John Edwards for "demanding change" and Barack Obama for "hope".

In the 1992 campaign, I believe it was Bill Clinton who (rightfully) slammed the incumbent administration by saying:

1) "Don't want to be sucker punched by a do-nothing president"

and

2) "I still believe in a place called Hope.

Is Hillary now campaigning both ON Bill Clinton's legacy, and AGAINST it???

I will look forward to reading the comments here on Friday morning when Senator Clinton places second in the Iowa caucuses.

On Meet the press this week they ran some footage showing Hillary saying "I've been IN government 16 years". Did I miss something? She's been a senator since 2001. Isn't that the total of her experience IN government?

Part 1
Back to the future? No thanks! I remember when Hillary"s serial adulterer husband was running for president in 92. I also remember all the scandals about his infidelities and her/his association with the Bush family/Mena - Iran Contra, CIA drug money laundering. The Clintons then promised to be agents of change like she"s claiming she is now. So what did Hillary"s serial adulterer accomplish? He shoved NAFTA down our throats against the will of the majority of the people. The "man of the people" lied, begged, borrowed and bribed to get it passed by a Democratic majority Congress. Hillary was busy attacking the doctors in our health care system and saying no way to a single payer health insurance system that would leave out the parasitical health insurance companies. Those same companies are now giving her record numbers of campaign contributions. Déjà vu.

After passing NAFTA, her serial adulterer husband then bailed out the Mexican and New York banks to the tune of over $50 billion of taxpayers money. Yes, they started bailing out the rich early in their 1st term in the White House. Remember how he felt "our" (the working class) pain, even though his actions contributed to it? In 96 Bill & Hillary gave us the Telecommunications Act, which allowed media consolidation. That"s why we now have to take our truth to the internet. Bill & Hillary then cut the capital gains tax rate to 15% so the people that feed off of the working class pay a lower tax rate than the working class that creates the wealth. Bill"s so called balanced budget was achieved by smoke and mirrors -- he "borrowed" our social security funds to cover the actual deficits they were truly running. Bush followed suit and now they"re claiming social security is in a crisis. Thanks Bill! Now Hillary wants to finish it off by handing our social security accounts to Wall Street, just like Bush tried to do.

I have noticed that some posters on this site claiming "Hey I am not a Hillary supporter," sound an awful lot like Hillary supporters.

Do these scare tactics seem similar to you?

President Clinton: "There is a better than 50 percent chance that sometime in the first year or 18 months of the next presidency, something will happen that is not being discussed in this campaign. President Bush never talked about Osama bin Laden and didn't foresee Hurricane Katrina. And if you're not ready for that, then everything else you do can be undermined. You need a president that you trust to deal with something that we will not discuss in this campaign. . . . And I think, on this score, she's the best of all."

Cheney: "If we make the wrong choice, then the danger is that we'll get hit again -- that we'll be hit in a way that will be devastating from the standpoint of the United States."
