AS Katie Couric puts a wrap on her first calendar year as anchor of the last-place "CBS Evening News," she's staring at some sobering stats: more than 1.1 million viewers have tuned her out over the last 12 months.

That's as if 100 percent of the households in Los Angeles had watched her last year and every last one of them shut their sets off last week. And that's really not that funny because the embattled newscast does particularly bad in the City of Angels.

I think all the major networks know who is a hot female and who is not. Candy Crowlee on CNN is NOT a hot chick, but she is a solid reporter. The reporter Lara Logan is really hot. And that's part of what these networks want. It is obvious that there are many talented reporters in the world. The networks want handsome men and beautiful foxy women. Couric has incredibly beautiful legs and IS incredibly pretty. Diane Sawyer is up there, too, Paula Zahn, my all time favorite.
Katie is her own producer, so the show is being set up and moves according to what she wants, not others. I imagine CBS will pull the plug this year. There are several other newscasts which dilute some of this segment's audience. I think Bob Schieffer was excellent, and more in the tradition of Cronkite and Rather.
None of these news broadcasts are totally news in that all have slightly longer interview segments and international events like bloody rioting in Kenya get 30 seconds. Couric has given it a good try and CBS has allowed her that time. If the losses continue this year, I'd say a change is coming.

As if it really matters who reads the bullshit they try and feed you every night.

The evening news is about entertainment, ratings and money....I'm just old enough to remember when it was about the truth.

Sometimes the American people demonstrate good old fashioned horse sense, especially when they reach to new news sources like HuffPo and DailyKos, along with online offerings from Salon, New Yorker, Atlantic Monthly, Nation, and other much more informative sources than the moribund network news, especially when network news has been 'prettied up' by the cutesy as poo KKKKatie Couric, who has all the depth of spit on a hot rock -- gee... I wonder if she's related to GWBush...

The Today Show wins it slot not because of the hosts, but because of the show, it the Today Show dummy. Now that NBC knows this, they could pay the host much less, so you want to leave, go right ahead. We will replace you with a green horn and still win our time slot.

Now you know Katie, the no 1 rating for the Today Show had nothing to do with you and now CBS knows it too.

She could try doing a female version of "Howard Beale".

Katie's longer hair diminished her fresh appeal.

The fault is not Katie's. The offering is not stick news like Gibson's broadcast. The genre pulls fewer viewers in this time slot, since it is traditionally for "Cronkite" type newscasting. Apparently, this is what CBS wants.

They could try to hike ratings with some novelties, that gets people to watch, like features of the week -fickle finger of fate award for wasteful spending in Congress, or something with an edge to it. In these days of specialty news, there is probably a woman's market - news from a woman's perspective, for example. Could be big !

She seems to be caught between universes.

I think she needs to sto reading Q cards and teleprompters and just lead and understand what she is reporting. Unfortnately there is not investigatve reporting and as a consequence, there is no value added regardless of who is in that seat. As long as she tries to look cute and read those eye candy the notes, thre is no content provided. She or ayone else might as well be reading the weather. There is no news in the news today there is no research being done, because networks believe ratings come from other things. The baby boomers just don't care about the crap that news companies put on TV any more. My dad reads a variety of newspapers and has friends all over the world that tell him the truth about the war and politics and legislation before is come out

I'm surprised. She seems to do a good job.

CNN has a lot of female news leads, including Nancy Grace doing Phyllis Diller and Fang. If Nancy Grace can remain on the air after all of the appeals courts criticisms she has received for knowing zero about criminal law, criminal procedure, court decorum and behavior, Katie should be able to command enough respect from viewers to keep them tuned to CBS.

ABC's Gibson, for example, has been around since Washington took Trenton. He is about as bright and shiny as patina, and as boring as Huckabee. Yet even Gibson seems to be doing OK on ratings.

Are women now being shown the door by the viewing public? One Hollywood type recently yelled "no more female leads" in movies.

Unless women and kids are the only ones left who watch the tube, I don't know any man who enjoys watching traditional Shakespearean casts - all men, dressed in drag for female roles.

Someday maybe I'll watch CBS news when they actually report it like they used to try to do.
