An Obama-Krugman Truce Over Health Care?

I didn't watch Russert -- I almost never do -- but apparently Barack Obama has just floated the idea of imposing some penalty on people who fail to sign up for health insurance.

If he's serious, and the penalty is sufficient to deter free riding, great. I don't care what you call the measure that makes universal health care work, as long as it gets the job done.

I followed the link from Krugman's blog to the original report where posters had weighed in.

(1) Like all of Obama's 'plans', his healthcare 'plan' was not thought out and was left with real problems dangling. He was too busy chanting "I am an agent for change" to sit down and figure out change-to-what. Details are NOT his strong suit.

(2) The Obama supporters posting on the linked column were all whining that they didn't want to have to pay for health insurance until they needed it because until then they were only subsidizing "older and sick people." They whined that they shouldn't have to pay for health coverage because they were pyaing off student loans, buying houses and having babies.

WOW! Apparently Obama attracts the completely selfish, utterly clueless and I-have-to-have-instant-gratification crowd.

His supporters are totally ignorant about how insurance works. What? Are they going to wait to sign up until they go to pop out the first kid and then drop out when the kid is born?

If one pays $300 a month from age 21 -65, that is $158,400. Congatulations. They have just paid enough to cover 4 1/2 days in hospital for simple cardiology proceedures -and that is it for all those years.

Nearly 30 years ago, I paid $50 a month for my employer plan. That is the equivalent of around $150-200 today. And I PAID STUDENT LOANS.

These Obama loons need to quit whining and grow up.

Public opinion is to the left of center of the Democratic Party. Obama is far to the right. So it looks like Obama has already tried to sell us our on tort reform and NAFTA.

Obama should be HRC's VP and he could carry water for the wealthy elites at the expense of working people.

If Obama wants to use the force of his personality he should go into show business. Edwards will bring much needed change, Obama will preserve the status quo. Simple economics, simple political science.

Has it occured to anyone that there is a reason Repubs want Obama to win. It will galvanize Repubs, split the Dems, southern white men will turn out in droves to vote against him, as well as many southern Dems, and the White House will go again to the Repubs. They couldnt be more obvious....nor more dishonest.....

Obama offers an unworkable 'vision' of post-conflict politics at a time when 'conflict' with the Right Wing machine is most needed. That could more simply be called surrender.

Will the Right Wing lay down it's agenda peacefully? If you think so you need to look at the history of the last 35 years. It's not some retread '60s conflict - it's economics and politics.

Obama offers Obama. The scam that 'one great leader' because he's such a charismatic fellow will solve problems with the force of his personality as the chosen one.

This isn't "The Matrix", Barack Obama's other name is not Neo.

Good for Obama, getting the endorsement of another far right wing lunatic, George Wills. And that after bagging the likes of David Brooks, Peggy Noonan and Karl Rove. I even hear that cousin Dick Cheney is going to stomp for Obama.

What could this mean? Perhaps these spokespeople of the far right have come to their senses and are now in repentance mode. They sincerely believe that Obama offers the best solutions to solve the real problems our country faces and to hell with partisan politics...they are going to do the right thing. These are people of conscience, after all. And they are speaking for the party that has a long history of tolerance for people of all colors and creeds.

Or maybe not.

A truce? I think that would be a concession by Obama indicating that Krugman was right. Terminology matters, both true journalists and propagandists know that.

How about all these Krugman bashing bloggers, I did not say commentators (because I should hope that unlike commentators, bloggers who write here should have some credentials), re-write their Krugman bashing pieces, now that Jesus Christ has conceded Krugman's point.

If he admits he made a mistake and changes it, that's a good thing. For now, I urge Obama to go on the Edwards ticket as VP. That ticket will be unstoppable in 2008, 2012 and will make an Obama presidency inevitable in 2016!
