Gov. Ted Strickland's viewpoint that Iowa is the wrong place to begin the presidential nominating process caused some angst yesterday in the campaign of Hillary Clinton and drew the ire of some voters here.

Despite saying that Iowa does not deserve its first-in-the-nation status, Strickland has made three trips to the state on behalf of the Democratic New York senator, showing up again Saturday, with no advance notice, to join Clinton for several campaign rallies in eastern Iowa.

As governor of arguably the most important battleground state in the 2008 general election, Strickland's mission was to assure audiences that Clinton can win Ohio and help ease fears by some Democrats about the senator's electability.

In an interview with The Dispatch last week, Strickland said the Iowa caucuses make "no sense." He called the GOP and Democratic caucuses "hugely undemocratic," because the process "excludes so many people." Anyone who happens to be working or is sick or too old to get out for a few hours Thursday night won't be able to participate, Strickland said.

Well, what i want to know is why we Huffpost readers are not being allowed to comment on the story of Chelsea Clinton refusing to talk to a nine year old reporter. What are the Clintons so afraid of that they need to muzzle their adult daughter. Billary is Bull!

THE TRUTH ABOUT THE CLINTONS.....Just Google...'Clinton Body Count'....then....'Ron Brown's Death'. Also, always keep in mind....the Neo-Cons literally wrote out the plan to invade Iraq, Iran and Syria back in 1992.(Google:PNAC.....Then watch a few of the videos). Each participant signed the plan....and coincidentally ended up on the Bush Administration. Like Rumsfeld, Wolfowitz, Bolton, Card, and many others. HILLARY IS PART OF THE PLAN.....which is why she is receiving more campaign contributions from defense contractors (bomb, guns, tank manufacturers, etc.) than any other candidate....even republicans....(remember Hillary was the head of her college Republican Chapter) which is why she voted to invade Iraq.....then voted to invade Iran. BUSH WANTS BILLARY TO WIN SO SHE WILL CARRY OUT THE PLAN. She is the worse choice for America !!!!.....and Edwards is a rich slick (pays $400 per haircut) trying to act like he caters to the poor....but has NEVER done ANYTHING for the poor. Barack Obama is the answer.....for the RE-BIRTH OF AMERICA !!!!

caucuses-schmaucuses...only the Media cares (and then shoves it down our throats) a few "interested pasties" deciding ..what? ..?everything? for the rest of us?? I agree the Importance of the Iowa Caucuses is way overblown (just another Poll).
Perhaps the saddest fact is that all of these candidates represent the best that the country has to offer to lead it....my God are they really the best this country can offer???

I have to say I agree whole heartedly with Ted on this one...Iowa cacuses are not really very democratic and I do not beleive their state actually represents a true cross section demographically. However, according to polls released today, Clinton still holds a narrow lead in Iowa, so it may work out well for her that Iowa is the firt to caucus or hold a primary.

I don't have a problem with the Iowa cacuses and the New Hampshire primaries---I just wish that the way they do things were replicated in more places --I do have a problem with the way the media portrays it that if a candidate does not finish win-place-or show in either or both--their campaigns are over and done with--perhaps that is one of the issues Gov. Strickland was addressing-I am from Ohio and by the time we get to vote in our primary--by the reckoning of the national media--the nominees of both parties are already a foregone conclusion.

great- here's another attempt by the media to make a turn of the phrase into another overblown news item to rip on Clinton and create a horserace. Any gotcha moment is picked up by Drudgereport and Huffpost as a headline.

Caucuses (cauci?) are idiotic political events that are one miniscule step above straw votes. They are supposed to emphasize organization and instead bow to one of the worst elements of American politics, the lowly county party poobah.

The balloting is not secret. There is pressure within families to conform to whichever patriarch or matriach is attending and possibly holding the purse strings. Small merchants or businessmen dependent on goodwill from townsfolk cannot be expected to vote or represent candidates honestly. In short, caucuses are inherently dishonest and unrepresentative of our attention. Less than 10% of Iowans even bother attending these exercises in stupidity.

At least New Hampshire has secret ballots and an open primary system. Pary lines can be crossed. While visions of candidates speaking in townsquares is probably farfetched, there is something inherently historic and very American about a group of New Englanders starting the process anew every four years and giving the nation their viewpoint.

Iowa either gets with the program or it should be dumped. Caucuses belong to the era of smoke filled rooms and party bosses choosing candidates. Direct balloting or they're finished.

I wonder if the Governor from Ohio would still feel that the Iowa caucuses are 'hugely undemocratic' if Hillary was polling at a huge lead in Iowa?

Just a thought,...

Take note Iowa. In its heart, this is what the HRC campaign thinks. Strickland just made the mistake of putting voice to their beliefs. When they come in third on Thursday, they will all be shouting this mantra.

Strickland's right. The current nominating system isn't written in stone. I think the voters in these early states take their job seriously enough, but their influence is all out of proportion to their number and demographics.

It's been pretty rare that a talented dark horse has been "discovered" by these early primaries and caucus, which was the whole point of letting tiny states go first.

Wasn't Ohio the place they found with irregularities in the polling process or something? Hmmmm......

Strickland is lobbying to be Vice President.

Although, pissing off the people of Iowa is not a good start.
