Des Moines, Iowa-- As the John Edwards campaign shows beefed-up muscle going into the last days of the caucus race, rival Barack Obama is concentrating most of his fire against the former North Carolina senator instead of confronting Hillary Clinton.

It's much more Obama versus Edwards than Barack versus Hillary.

During a Des Moines speech Sunday night to a heated crowd of 1,500 supporters, Obama vigorously rebutted statements made earlier in the day by Edwards that Obama was "too nice" to be an effective President. "I have to say, I've been doing this my whole life," Obama said, referring to his long record of personal political activism. "When you talk about change, you might just want to try the guy who's actually done it before," Obama said, implying that Edwards is a Johnny-come-lately to the arena of social reform.

Obama said that as a young man he was offered many lucrative choices but turned them down in favor of low-paid work as a community organizer and as a civil rights lawyer, a theme he has sounded repeatedly on the stump over the past weeks. For the first time, and in a direct shot at Edwards, Obama said one of the big bucks options he turned down was to work as a "trial lawyer."

Edwards has made millions as a trial lawyer and boasts of how he has used that position to take on bog corporations.

The increased friction between Obama and Edwards comes as a barrage of polls show both candidates, along with Hillary Clinton, in a virtual tie to win the first-in-the-country caucuses. Any expectations that Edwards, running third in most national polls, would eventually fade here in Iowa have dissipated as some surveys show him in the lead in the Hawkeye State.

Obama's senior campaign advisor, David Axelrod, denied to The Huffington Post that his campaign had until recently underestimated Edward's strength, especially in Iowa's rural areas. "We came into Iowa months ago knowing that Edwards had built a strong presence," he said. "Senator Edwards has been working those areas for six years. But I've been out there these last few days and can tell you our rallies are two, three times bigger than his."

On a Monday morning media conference call, Obama's national campaign manager, David Plouffe, virtually ignored Hillary Clinton in his discussion of Iowa, preferring to compare his campaign with that of Edwards. He also argued that growing crowd sizes for Obama were evidence of his superior positioning in the contest.

Admitting to "an amazing amount of volatility" in the Iowa race, Plouffe nevertheless expressed confidence that the Obama campaign was outdrawing and out-organizing the Edwards operation . "We just had the best weekend of the campaign in attracting new supporters, knocking on 90,000 doors," he said.

Plouffe excoriated Edwards and Clinton for benefiting from what he called a "blizzard of outside money," referring to independent expenditures made by so-called 527 groups not officially affiliated with the candidates. Plouffe denounced the support being given to the Edwards and Clinton effort by certain unions and women's group. "It's now one against seven," Plouffe said, portraying the Obama campaign as a David standing against special interest Goliaths.

In the past both Plouffe and Axelrod have worked for 527 fund-raising groups similar to those now supporting their rivals. While Plouffe would not say his campaign explicitly thought such 527's should be banned, he said on two different occasions during the call, that the link between some union-backed groups and the Edwards campaign "is an issue that deserves more scrutiny."

The jury makes the decision, NOT the 'trial lawyer.' Jury members don't give -&- take lobbyist or PAC money either.

Edwards '08!

Obama is cracking under the pressure. Forget the nomination for president.

I cannot in good conscience vote for someone who lives in a 28,000 sq ft compound, complete with swimming pool, basketball court and squash/racketball court.

Just heating and cooling that fortress puts him waaaaaay out of touch with the majority of Americans.

You only want to provide universal healthcare if you can raise taxes - on the Middle Class - who are being squeezed too much as it is.

You can start paying for universal health care by outlawing a record 9,800 earmarks which totaled $10 BILLION this year.

To see a democratic front runner imply that there is something shameful in being a trial lawyer is very discouraging. As Obama should know, trial lawyers are the only refuge for many workers and/or poor individuals in this country to seek justice for wrongs committed against them. Obama has taken this attack right out of the Republican playbook - a playbook designed to protect Republican interests.

Face it, the guy has practically the same voting record as Clinton - except on Iran - where Obama didn't even bother to show up on a vote that is so crucial. Obama is a moderate in progressive clothing. As a member of the radical/progressive left I see no substance to his claims that he represents progressives - at least Hillary doesn't pretend and continues to alienate us like all moderates before her. I can't believe that people buy into his rhetoric about "hope" and "change" just because he utters those words ten thousand times per appearance. It's really easy to talk about how you are uncorrupted when by the D.C. machine when you have only been there a short period of time and haven't had to comprimise to pass any truly progressive bills of your own crafting - I would like to see him tout his experience if given another 8 years in the Senate. We have other candidates who have done more and who we can look at and see how they have interacted in D.C., unfortunately the front runners were detirmined before the first debates by media attention and pundits and discussion of their records at this point is almost absurd.

Hey let’s be honest in 2004 Edwards was against Universal Healthcare now he is for it. John Edwards was a founding member of the DLC. He said "his views on trade as ''a tick away'' from those of the Democratic Leadership Council, a moderate group that has been a champion of free trade, and of former President Bill Clinton, who signed Nafta in 1993."
He was a nice moderate

Now he is angry populist
In 2001 John Edwards formed a leadership PAC called The New Optimist Pac where he poured thousands of dollars into Iowa and New Hampshire in 2002."the Optimists poured at least $288,000 into Iowa and $197,000 into New Hampshire. "

I really wish Obama and and Edwards would focus on beating Clinton. Then we will have a chance of having a Democrat as president who is not pro-war and is likely to be a change agent rather than to be the same old crap. We need honesty and change which does not sound like a Republican or a Clinton!

Obama is running for nomination on NOTHING....he's offering PIPEDREAMS to a lot of young people. For weeks now, Obama has been attacking Edwards. Time for Edwards to give Obama a knockout punch!

Obama is a MOTORMOUTH! Talk! talk! talk! That's all he does talk! He'll talk your ear off! Last thanksgiving his audience in NH walked out while he was blabbering his mouth like a tobacco auctioneer.

Edwards was on c-span this a.m.

Giving a smashing stump speech. The audience was connecting big time.

You can see how jurors were motivated to add all those 000,000's to verdicts in favor of his clients.

Reminded one of Harry Truman's stump speech in 1948, when he told folks to look in their wallets at the social security card, the GI bill, etc., and said Repigs wanted to take it all away.

Edwards of course was saying, take back country from insurance companies and corporations.

Audience was connecting big time.

Edwards could get the nomination if he keeps this up.

There is no doubt that both Obama and edwards are good, solid candidates.

I don't pay much attention to "he said this and the other said that" in some stupid speech in a God fresaken place somewhere in frozen tundra called Iowa.

Both Edwards and Obama are honorable and honest. And I have no resaon to doubt the integrity of either and, for that matter, of any other Dem candidate.

I think we should take a look at the most important issues facing our country. Then. we should evaluate how each of the candidates plans to address those issue.

That's what counts.

From what I can tell, I think Edwards has a much better approach for addressing the major issues.

I think we're all going to breathe a sigh of relief when Edwards takes the 08 Election.
I think he will empower a more progressive growth to Our Party.
1. He has promised the corporate lobbyists will not be welcome in his/our Whitehouse.

so all you dlc dems go send out your resumes:

Obama sounds like a frickin' republican. Why doesn't he just change sides?

We need a trial lawyer, and a real FIGHTER to bring about change in America, and Edwards is the honest agent of change in this election.

Obama just talks and talks and talks and never really says anything. He reminds me of Condi, just meaningless words that sound good.

Yeah, the last thing we want in the White House is someone who understands the law ... Obama should know better than to attack Edwards for being a "Trial Lawyer".

The funny thing is that everyone seems to hate Lawyers until they need one.

Straight Up, it's an Idiot's Bias.

Many of us who liked what Kucinich had to say in nationally televised debates find Edwards as the electable Kucinich.

Many of us are fed up of go-along-to-get-along bipartisanship nonsense and of band-aids for problems requiring major surgery.

Edwards has a very strong message. Excessive corporate influence on public policy is the root of a lot of our problems. And I think Edwards is dead serious and committed to changing this unacceptable situation.

I like how he thinks, and I like his approach.

Edwards is a very electable Kucinich.

If Edwards has a decent shot at winning California, I might vote for him rather than Kucinich.

Right on preemptive, glad someone tells it like it is. You have to wonder about some of these know-it-alls on here. My vote is for Edwards. My nephew is a doctor and he is voting for Edwards too.
