Des Moines, Iowa-- As the John Edwards campaign shows beefed-up muscle going into the last days of the caucus race, rival Barack Obama is concentrating most of his fire against the former North Carolina senator instead of confronting Hillary Clinton.

It's much more Obama versus Edwards than Barack versus Hillary.

During a Des Moines speech Sunday night to a heated crowd of 1,500 supporters, Obama vigorously rebutted statements made earlier in the day by Edwards that Obama was "too nice" to be an effective President. "I have to say, I've been doing this my whole life," Obama said, referring to his long record of personal political activism. "When you talk about change, you might just want to try the guy who's actually done it before," Obama said, implying that Edwards is a Johnny-come-lately to the arena of social reform.

Obama said that as a young man he was offered many lucrative choices but turned them down in favor of low-paid work as a community organizer and as a civil rights lawyer, a theme he has sounded repeatedly on the stump over the past weeks. For the first time, and in a direct shot at Edwards, Obama said one of the big bucks options he turned down was to work as a "trial lawyer."

Edwards has made millions as a trial lawyer and boasts of how he has used that position to take on bog corporations.

The increased friction between Obama and Edwards comes as a barrage of polls show both candidates, along with Hillary Clinton, in a virtual tie to win the first-in-the-country caucuses. Any expectations that Edwards, running third in most national polls, would eventually fade here in Iowa have dissipated as some surveys show him in the lead in the Hawkeye State.

Obama's senior campaign advisor, David Axelrod, denied to The Huffington Post that his campaign had until recently underestimated Edward's strength, especially in Iowa's rural areas. "We came into Iowa months ago knowing that Edwards had built a strong presence," he said. "Senator Edwards has been working those areas for six years. But I've been out there these last few days and can tell you our rallies are two, three times bigger than his."

On a Monday morning media conference call, Obama's national campaign manager, David Plouffe, virtually ignored Hillary Clinton in his discussion of Iowa, preferring to compare his campaign with that of Edwards. He also argued that growing crowd sizes for Obama were evidence of his superior positioning in the contest.

Admitting to "an amazing amount of volatility" in the Iowa race, Plouffe nevertheless expressed confidence that the Obama campaign was outdrawing and out-organizing the Edwards operation . "We just had the best weekend of the campaign in attracting new supporters, knocking on 90,000 doors," he said.

Plouffe excoriated Edwards and Clinton for benefiting from what he called a "blizzard of outside money," referring to independent expenditures made by so-called 527 groups not officially affiliated with the candidates. Plouffe denounced the support being given to the Edwards and Clinton effort by certain unions and women's group. "It's now one against seven," Plouffe said, portraying the Obama campaign as a David standing against special interest Goliaths.

In the past both Plouffe and Axelrod have worked for 527 fund-raising groups similar to those now supporting their rivals. While Plouffe would not say his campaign explicitly thought such 527's should be banned, he said on two different occasions during the call, that the link between some union-backed groups and the Edwards campaign "is an issue that deserves more scrutiny."

I don't understand Obama's position on this one. Just because Edwards makes/made money as a trial lawyer that means he can't be interested in the poor or social reform? Edwards has openly said that he wants to remove barriers established by the upper class to keep the "little guy" down. He wants to return to the American dream that allowed him to grow from the son of a millworker to a succesful lawyer. What's so bad about that? Is Obama claiming you have to be poor to help the poor? He may have turned down more lucrative job offers to pursue more personally satisfying community organizing efforts, but he certainly seems to have down well for himself. He's a sitting Senator!!! Obama needs to drop the holier-than-thou attitude on this one. Edwards isn't against people making money and lots of it actually, he just thinks more people should be given a real chance at upward social movement.

John Edwards is RIGHT! You can't sit down with the healthcare industry and make nice. They need to be treated as firmly as they treat their clients. They need to be told in NO UNCERTAIN TERMS THAT THEY ARE TO STOP THEIR consistent denial of health benefits to paying customers. My friend worked for Blue Shield; she was given strict orders to turn down every single claim that came into their office. Most people won't argue with the denial; then when there are questions, they start their seedy little game of negotiations, while still not paying the claim. They are the scum of America; the pharmaceuticals and insurance companies have brought down the American consciousness to a new level of fraud and deception. GO JOHN EDWARDS!

I find it disturbing when a Democrat uses terms from the vile pile of Republicanism's. The words "trial lawyer" now have instant meaning to just about everyone, because of the endless repetition from the neo-con right wing fringe. It means bad person. And that's the mantra that Obama is tapping into to automatically denegrate John Edwards. In other words, when you hear the words "trial lawyer" your knee jerks, a frown appears on your face, and the stereotype takes hold. Kind of like old soundbites like "tax and spend", or "frivolous lawsuit".

I find it sad that Obama feels the need to use classless Republicanism's for political advantage. For this reason (among others) I'd never vote for Obama. That said however, I wouldn't vote for Edwards either. I'd vote for Kucinich, or Nader if he runs, but the rest of the pack are not to be trusted, and as with Obama in this, will take their political advantage where they find it...in this case, in the Republican playbook.

That's it. I was on the fence between Obama and Edwards. But no more. I'm a Des Moines trial lawyer and I will do my absolute best on Thursday night to sway everybody at my caucus precinct away from Obama. Prick.

If there are any undecided voters reading these threads, which I doubt, I hope you are considering the actual history of each candidate.

John Edwards only claim to fame as a politician was to help write the legislation that took away a part of our constitution in order to enable George Bush to enter into an illegal war. If you were one of those people who could see the Bush fear "screen" to realize that the evidence was suspicious and so was George and his reasons for wanting to attack Iraq - voting for John Edwards is like voting for Bush's war.

Really. Shrum had it right when he said that Edwards sidled up to him to "confide" in him how difficult his son's death was only to find out that Edwards had told the same story to several other people along with the caveat that they were the only people he had confided in, too.

Edwards is a hypocrite who decries offshore companies and works for them; he voted for war and now apologizes for it, voted for 'no child left behind' now regrets it and, created a so-called volunteer group to rebuild New Orleans only to use it as a front to raise funds to keep his campaign presence in Iowa. He is a silver-tongued hypocrite who can't be trusted.

I want to be the first to thank Marc Cooper for giving us the inside scoop in Iowa. I hope Iowans turn out for Barack..I know our Hollywood voices won't sway them, might even offend them with all those outside calls at this point, so it's really down to candidates themselves making the sale. I pray that people really listen carefully to what each candidate actually is saying and not accept rumour mill garbage.

Obama has been blamed for being "all talk no walk" by many Edwards supporters. I don't see from Edwards background why would they think that Edwards has even walked as much as Obama has, let alone excel him in that area. The same goes about so called "foreign policy experience".

This race wouldn't even be close if the numbers were based soley on track record. This is like Luke Walton competing against Kobe for the MVP; excpet politics aren't as objective as sports--is it?

A doctor forced a Caesarian section on a woman, probably to increase his fee or to put the birth "on schedule" instead of waiting for natural labor.

The baby ended up with brain damage.

The HMO claimed in was Cerebral Palsy.
Genetic testing showed the baby did not carry the Cerebral Palsy gene. The parents hired Edwards and sued the doctors ass off and collected from the HMO.

I guess the DNA testing showing the baby did not carry the Cerebral Palsy Gene was the "Junk Science" Thurber is referring to.

The cause of cerebral palsy has not been scientifically proven to be genetic. The jury
however did not beleive the HMO and their experts. They decided the doctor screwed up and tried to cover it up with a bogus diagnosis.

Trials lawyers have to slug it out in court against well-trained opponents. They have to abide by complex rules or get slammed by the judge. And they have to present a solid case that will persuade a jury. Edwards used these skills to defend people who were harmed by powerful interests. And he won. Often.

Sounds like good training for the presidency to me.

It's ridiculous for one lawyer to slam another person for being a lawyer. Come on, Barack. You're better than that.
