Obama Camp Calls Unions "Special Interests"

Barack Obama has always excited big Labor and other Democratic constituencies, even if they weren't necessarily ready to endorse him for the presidency. Now, though, as Mr. Obama goes all out to undermine a surging John Edwards in the final days before the Iowa caucuses, that cordial relationship is being put to the test. Mr. Obama has essentially charged that Mr. Edwards is a hypocrite because, while Mr. Edwards has said he favors banning unregulated campaign money from outside groups, his campaign is getting millions of dollars worth of assistance from outside contributors -- namely unions. What's remarkable about this line of attack is that, while Mr. Obama is aiming squarely at Mr. Edwards, he also risks alienating some of the most powerful interest groups in Democratic Washington.

In case you haven't been paying attention, here's what's going on: several state chapters of the mighty Service Employees International Union have endorsed Mr. Edwards and set up an independent entity -- the kind of so-called 527 that Edwards himself has decried in the past -- to run ads on his behalf. They even hired his 2004 campaign manager, Nick Baldick, to oversee the operation. (The state and municipal workers union and Emily's List are also in Iowa, dropping a lot of cash in support of Hillary Clinton.) Mr. Obama, the only one of the three leading candidates who hasn't received a big union endorsement, has repeatedly called on Mr. Edwards to ask his labor friends to stand down. Mr. Edwards has responded by saying that he still opposes such groups in theory, but that he isn't involved in the union effort and is powerless to control it.

Voters should be wary of those individuals who would use the color of their skin to promote themselves rather than to promote the greater good.
There are some who have done this in the past for their personal advantage such as Clarence Thomas.
He has admittled used "Affirmative Action" to his advantage but thinks no one else should be able to.

Now is not the time for "Social Experimentation". Vote for ability rather than likeability.

92% of Americans receive a W-2 in the mail every year and are workers whether organized as part of unions or not.

Obama has spoken - time for the workers in America to speak.

Anyone except for Obama. Corporate thug.

I alway knew Obama was against working people.

I did not think it was possible, I am a socialist, but the DLC may get me to vote Republican.

Hey, Barack, right hand DOWN...LOL

There should be someone following these people
around with a little stick, and every time that
right hand takes flight, WHAP!

Of course, they learned that waving your right
hand around is like a power gesture...what ELSE
did they learn? What, indeed...hmmm...

I don't know, never met the guy, but something
just screams, G-MONEY!

LOL

Well I would guess that Obama's campaign sees unions as 'special interests', especially when they are not supporting, him.

Obama is being frank as always. he doesn't just tell people what they want to hear. the issue is not his committment to workers.

he tells America that obesity is one of the main causes of rising healthcare costs.

he tells automakers they need to cut emissions.

this is just Obama being Obama.

This is it for me, the last straw. Obama's a boob. He goes to the end of the list of Democrats I can support. Ahead of him are Edwards, Kucinich, Biden, Dodd, Clinton and Richardson. Oh, and fearwig? I read the post.

The media have a special power: whenever things get slow, they create candidate gaffes out of thin air.

Unions are interest groups. Why is this news?

Democrats and Republicans both realize they have to take money from special interest groups to get elected to the U. S. Presidency.
The only difference is, as recent history shows, the Republicans joyfully grant favors to these special interests because that fits their policies.
The Democrats, on the otherhand, must accept money to get elected but apply the advice given by an old time Democrat to a new electee.
Sonny boy, "If you can"t take their money, drink their whiskey, screw their women, and vote against "em anyway, you don"t belong in the Legislature".

Unions ARE "special interests". They are unique in only two ways:

1) Unions are especially interested in the well-being of many, many more people than the ordinary "special interest" that focuses primarily on moving as much money as possible into a restricted set of hands

2) Typically, all other "special interests" have destroying the "special interests" that are unions somewhere on their agenda

Did we read the post before commenting?

Did it say Obama was against UNIONS, or SPECIAL INTEREST(527s) money?

Obama is not anti-union, otherwise, the smaller unions wouldn't have endorsed him.

So you can save your collective breaths on your insinuation that he is against unions.

All you hear from Obama is basically....when I was in no position of authority and had no access to pertinent information and no input on the decision making...this is what I felt...

In otherwords...blah! blah! blah!
