Des Moines, Iowa-- Buoyed by a widening, seven-point lead in the latest and most respected state poll, the Barack Obama campaign today saw a routine gathering of volunteer canvassers mushroom into a raucous, celebratory mass pep rally for the candidate.

As the morning edition of the Des Moines Register showed Obama with a 32%-25% lead over Hillary Clinton and John Edwards standing at 24% in Thursday night's caucus, the Roosevelt High School auditorium was unexpectedly flooded with nearly 1,500 supporters who braved sub-freezing air temperatures.

A drop-in by Obama to greet the precinct walkers was long planned but no one anticipated the crush of attendees and media that overflowed the gym. He was joined onstage by wife and two young daughters.

"The polls look good, but the polls don't count," a visibly confident and jubilant Barack Obama told the bundled up crowd. "The only thing that counts is that you go to caucus, that you call your neighbors, that you knock on doors. That's the only poll that counts."

The centrally located Des Moines high school gym floor was converted into a virtual ground-war command center, with volunteer and staff campaign field workers stationed at tables for every major district in surrounding Polk County. With caucusing set to begin in 48 hours, scores of canvassers were loaded with voter- information packets and deployed to knock on doors in 15-degree temperatures.

"Each canvasser has a walking map and a list identifying each household -- which ones say they are for sure going to caucus for us and which ones are undecided. We have a different piece of literature for each one," explained 27-year-old field staffer Mario Bonifacio, who was serving in the U.S. Army in Iraq until last May.

The Des Moines Register poll carries unusual significance because it is considered not only an authoritative survey but also one likely to influence the vote. Obama's lead in the poll was fueled by a projected unprecedented turnout of young, independent and first-time caucus goers, an assumption now being criticized by the Clinton and Edwards campaigns.

But Obama took efforts at today's event to showcase the youthful core of his campaign organization. He proudly brought to the stage his top dozen organizers for Polk County. All were under 25 and dressed mostly in jeans and sweatshirts.

Obama stuck closely to the latest version of his stump speech, underscoring his central themes of hope and change. "There comes a moment in each generation," he said, provoking a loud ovation: "This is our moment. This is our time."

He devoted some special emphasis in today's address, however, to the issue of the war and related national security matters The Iowans he has met on the campaign trail, he said, "are ashamed of Guantanamo, they are ashamed of Abu Ghraib, they are ashamed of warrantless wiretaps and they are ashamed we are having a debate in this country on when to use torture." He vowed not only to end the war in Iraq but also to end "the mindest that gets us into war.

Just that sort of rhetoric is what attracted staffer and Iraq vet Bonifacio to the campaign. "It wasn't until I got over there in Iraq that I realized we weren't fighting for all the good things the politicians told us," he said as he continued to stuff the canvassing packets. "But Obama was against the war from the beginning, and he was right."

A few miles away at the downtown Obama headquarters there was a buzz of last minute activity. A midnight statewide conference call conducted right after the Register poll was released helped set the marching orders for these last three days.

One room in the chaotic jumble of rented offices is staffed only by those whose task is to solve individual logistical problems in getting voters to the caucuses on Thursday night. "We're gearing up," said staffer Bobby Gravitz. "We're calling in everybody and anybody who's ever worked for us, who's ever volunteered for us, who has ever said they want to volunteer. This is it."

I hate to admit this, but at first I was infused with enthusiasm for the Obama campaign, and later, as time wore on, I found myself more aligned with John Edwards but Mr. Obama was always a good second choice. That was until the McClurkin incident when he stated that his tent was big enough for a homophobe and the LGTB community. Evangelicals who view homosexuality as a curse that can be overcome by prayer, and those who seek to have constitutional rights extended to the one community against which it is still not illegal to discriminate. Mr. Obama is a muddled thinker. I like his youth, him persona, his charisma, but I am never sure which Mr. Obama is speaking. The one who wants to extend the LGTB community more rights or the one who prays with Mr. Mc Clurkin. As a result of all this, I find myself more attracted to Mrs. Clinton as my second choice, something, I never thought could be the case. Giordy

If Obama wins this, and IF Obama goes all the way...my prediction, and based on the last debates, is that Biden, who I absolutely love, will be in an Obama Cabinet...possibly Richardson and Dodd.

I am cautiously optimistic that we might actually get a strong egalitarian nominee, who opposed the war from the beginning.

After seeing the Des Moines Register headline my feet have barely touched the ground, I have been floating on air in the belief that my country and the democratic party are finally coming to there senses?

Obama you make us proud to be an American again, now close the deal.

You state that Senator Obama has "a seven-point lead in the latest and most respected state poll."

This statement is totally inaccurate. In fact, there is little knowledge about the pollster who did this poll that appears to have very little political polling experience. How such a pollster could be the "most respected poll" in Iowa is beyond understanding. And this is not the only poll that came out about the same time. Most of the others show Senator Clinton in the lead.

Moreover, this is not the latest poll. The latest is by Zogby, which maintains a daily rolling average that shows Senator Clinton ahead of Senator Obama by more than the margin of error. It is beyond question but that Zogby is one of the most respected pollsters in the world.

This continues a pattern with Huffington Post. It is highly biased and inaccurate, disseminating false information about Senators Obama and Clinton and related poll results.

Before you can become respected, you must get your facts right.

It's butterfly time.

It's like a NASA launch for me, emotionally. I have used my best judgement, I've measured and tested the rocket from every concievable angle. All systems are go. It's T minus 48 hrs. and counting.

At T minus ten seconds, the eyes close, the fingers cross... 4, 3, 2, 1...

"WE HAVE LIFTOFF!"

Deep inside begins the mantra, "god, if it is your will for us, let Obama win the nomination and go on to bring America back into a state of grace." (since I've never spent a day in church in my entire adult life, I have no idea where this stuff comes from, but... it helps, sorta.) Anyway...

With what I have to work with--my heart, my brain, and my soul-- I feel I've honestly made the best choice and done what I could to help my country, and my party. From there, it's outta my hands. I become Blanche in A Streetcar Named Desire:

"Whoever you are, I have always depended on the kindness of strangers." (Tennessee Williams)

"For love ye risk and hazzard everything ye hath." (William Shakespeare)

"I have a dream..." (Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.)

"It's like a roll of the dice." (William Jefferson "Bill" Clinton)

Let the good times roll.

"BONNE CHANCE" everybody.

Some folks here think the comments section is a playground to attack each other.

JohnCT, JaneC etc, you're smart people but come off as fucking retards with how much time you waste here, and "winning" an argument against an ill-informed troll is no better than being one.

Maybe more of us lurkers would actually comment (ahem, and maybe stick to the fucking topic too) if there weren't already 100 pages of stupid OT attacks.

My problem with Hillary in a nutshell:

If her last name wasn't Clinton, nobody would know who she is. Period. She has earned nothing, she married it.

If "W's" last name wasn't Bush, nobody would know who he is. Period. He earned nothing, he was born into it.

Give me a candidate who arrived on the national stage under his or her own power and I'll be impressed. Otherwise, next.

There is no doubt that there is an Obama bias here. And why not ? Just look at the other democrat candidates. Not one of them has anything to offer but going back in time.

Obama is the only democrat talking about the future.

Dems, if you want real change, vote Obama. He may be inexperienced, but he's smart enough to hire good people for his cabinet.

I don't think being Governor of Arkansas, whose economy is smaller than New Haven, CT was much of a qualification, but you dems liked Bubba as President.
