Des Moines, Iowa-- Buoyed by a widening, seven-point lead in the latest and most respected state poll, the Barack Obama campaign today saw a routine gathering of volunteer canvassers mushroom into a raucous, celebratory mass pep rally for the candidate.

As the morning edition of the Des Moines Register showed Obama with a 32%-25% lead over Hillary Clinton and John Edwards standing at 24% in Thursday night's caucus, the Roosevelt High School auditorium was unexpectedly flooded with nearly 1,500 supporters who braved sub-freezing air temperatures.

A drop-in by Obama to greet the precinct walkers was long planned but no one anticipated the crush of attendees and media that overflowed the gym. He was joined onstage by wife and two young daughters.

"The polls look good, but the polls don't count," a visibly confident and jubilant Barack Obama told the bundled up crowd. "The only thing that counts is that you go to caucus, that you call your neighbors, that you knock on doors. That's the only poll that counts."

The centrally located Des Moines high school gym floor was converted into a virtual ground-war command center, with volunteer and staff campaign field workers stationed at tables for every major district in surrounding Polk County. With caucusing set to begin in 48 hours, scores of canvassers were loaded with voter- information packets and deployed to knock on doors in 15-degree temperatures.

"Each canvasser has a walking map and a list identifying each household -- which ones say they are for sure going to caucus for us and which ones are undecided. We have a different piece of literature for each one," explained 27-year-old field staffer Mario Bonifacio, who was serving in the U.S. Army in Iraq until last May.

The Des Moines Register poll carries unusual significance because it is considered not only an authoritative survey but also one likely to influence the vote. Obama's lead in the poll was fueled by a projected unprecedented turnout of young, independent and first-time caucus goers, an assumption now being criticized by the Clinton and Edwards campaigns.

But Obama took efforts at today's event to showcase the youthful core of his campaign organization. He proudly brought to the stage his top dozen organizers for Polk County. All were under 25 and dressed mostly in jeans and sweatshirts.

Obama stuck closely to the latest version of his stump speech, underscoring his central themes of hope and change. "There comes a moment in each generation," he said, provoking a loud ovation: "This is our moment. This is our time."

He devoted some special emphasis in today's address, however, to the issue of the war and related national security matters The Iowans he has met on the campaign trail, he said, "are ashamed of Guantanamo, they are ashamed of Abu Ghraib, they are ashamed of warrantless wiretaps and they are ashamed we are having a debate in this country on when to use torture." He vowed not only to end the war in Iraq but also to end "the mindest that gets us into war.

Just that sort of rhetoric is what attracted staffer and Iraq vet Bonifacio to the campaign. "It wasn't until I got over there in Iraq that I realized we weren't fighting for all the good things the politicians told us," he said as he continued to stuff the canvassing packets. "But Obama was against the war from the beginning, and he was right."

A few miles away at the downtown Obama headquarters there was a buzz of last minute activity. A midnight statewide conference call conducted right after the Register poll was released helped set the marching orders for these last three days.

One room in the chaotic jumble of rented offices is staffed only by those whose task is to solve individual logistical problems in getting voters to the caucuses on Thursday night. "We're gearing up," said staffer Bobby Gravitz. "We're calling in everybody and anybody who's ever worked for us, who's ever volunteered for us, who has ever said they want to volunteer. This is it."

There ought to be a post on the speech Michelle Obama gave on Monday that aired on C-Span. She was incredible. She outshines the entire field of presidential candidates including her husband.

I wonder if that Des Moines poll wasn't conducted immediately following that speech.

You will love Obama,
You will hate Hillary,
You will not be allowed to see Edwards, Dodd, Biden, Kusinich, or Gravel.

According to press reports- Kucinich has asked his supporters to go for Obama as their 2nd choice- while I believe that both are good intentioned men- I do not believe that the progressive and Democratic folks are served well with a fringe left nominee in November as Obama. We have lost 2 past elections to results that are disastrous for our nation- we cannot afford another loss. I am with Hillary Clinton who will return our nation to the centrist and fiscally responsible course that we had under Bill Clinton.
Obama should focus on running for Governor of Illinois.
I have valued HF Post for the mature coverage on the Bhutto murder- but on the pulse of the nation- you just do not get it in your idealistic leftist pursuit- I, a die hard Democrat and Patriot will find it very difficult to vote for a Kucinich, Edwards or Obama. A Biden or Richardson or yes, even a McCain would be a choice for me. I believe that the heart land of America is like me

"My uncle served with distinction in the first gulf war receiving numerous commendations including the bronze star. He was put out at the end of the war before he qualified for full retirement benefits. He has been receiving a yearly stipend from the army since he got out. This apparently keeps him in the ready reserve.
Two days before x-mas he got a letter telling him to report for active duty in mid Jan
They must be desperate to draft A 50 year old grandfather back to be a sergeant. They are calling up the men at the bottom of the list. There is nowhere else to get more men other than bringing back the draft. My family is totally dumbfounded, he was about to start building his retirement home on a new piece of property they had just bought. His third child has gotten married and moved out. He runs two businesses and has for years. Now what?"

You think Obama is going to win in this Conservative state??? Iowa has the lowest turn-out voting rate out of anywhere. HuffPo needs to come to grips that koombiya Hussein Obama will never win. He shit his pants when Bhutto was killed. Ooops, that no-experience thing caught up to him again.

Can the liberals make a deal with the Bushies? We libs will forgive all of the Bush administration's crimes...of course several lawsuit are pending and Vermont is working on legislation to arrest Bush and Cheney if they go there, but... and you forgive all of the Clintons' alleged crimes and we'll start fresh. What do you say? No more blow-job jokes or Monica jokes or mention of the Whitewater scandal? Is it a deal?

So - if Obama is to get to the numbers the Des Moines Register poll predicts - he will have to turn out 45% Independents and Republicans combined to vote in the Iowa Caucus and suppress Democrats from voting (in 2004, Democrats made up 80% of the voters and in the latest DMR poll, they're suddenly down to 55%). This makes no sense.

However, if Independents and Republicans hijack this caucus from life-long and long-term Democrats for the political convenience of voting for Obama during this night, this will be a fiasco. Isn't the Democratic wing of the Democrats supposed to pick the Democratic candidate, not the independents and Republicans?

Considering that three other polls released within the last two days show Hillary in the lead...If I were Barak, I would calm down. It's just going to make him look that much more foolish when he comes in second or third:)

"I don't understand Senator Obama's confusion about the difference between special interests and ordinary American's like the Iowa voters who will caucus on January 3. He certainly was not confused when he accepted our union's PAC money and volunteers and other support in his campaigns for the State Senate and the U.S. Senate. What's more, it does not help the Democratic nominee, regardless of who she or he is, to have him criticize the activities of workers and their unions now – whether those activities are member education, 527 efforts or independent expenditures – when they'll be so critical to the outcome of the general election later.."

So what s Obama with spitting on unions as "special interests" ?

Kudos to Dennis Kucinich for asking those who vote for him to select Obama as their 2nd choice. From a Republican for Obama who will bring unity more than any other candidate.

Both Obama and Edwards represent change. Obama represents change in the way we conduct foreign policy. Edwards represents change in the way we energize the middle class against corporatism. Neither are in bed with the corporate beltway the way the Clintons are, which is why any Democrat but Hillary can beat the GOP ticket. Hillary is so disliked by the GOP and half of her own party, why would any Democrat that wants to win support her?

Please, will someone please tell me one thing that Obama did in his short political career?

He taught law as an adjunct in Chicago.
He represented clients at a law firm but now slams trial lawyers, like John Edwards.
He organized a voter registration drive.
He worked with a church group.

This is from his own website. The high points.

He tries on that same website to take credit for creating an Earned Income Credit for people in his home state. He didn't invent that or pass that or create that.

The only plan this man has is a marketing plan.
