Pakistan's election commission said Tuesday that unrest following the killing of Benazir Bhutto would almost certainly force the postponement of Jan. 8 elections, despite opposition threats of street protests if the poll is delayed.

As election officials met with political leaders to discuss a possible delay, an aide to Bhutto said the opposition leader had been planning to give two U.S. lawmakers a report accusing the ruling regime of working to rig the vote when she was killed Thursday.

In my view, I think the country would be far better off without Musharraf at the helm ... however, too many Pakistanis are frightened to speak out against him ~ & his ruthless methods ~ for fear of their lives. Things will never improve with a former military leader in control in Pakistan. They will worsen, I fear.

Bin Laden is Dead and Bhutto named his assassin
on live TV in an interview with David Frost.

Perhaps that is why she was killed?

Why delay? We know the outcome already. Musharraf counts the votes.

There are too many things wrong with this picture (so to speak) for any kind of fair or valid electoral process to occur in Pakistan anytime soon, I think. As a decent leader, Musharraf is a complete failure ~ in part, by proving he's willing to interfere with the Supreme Court, the constitution, & rule of law there by such disquieting decisions as imposing 'emergency rule' (eg., martial law, as I know it...), wrongly imprisoning/detaining those who stood up for reform, suspending the press, etc.

Add to this, the fact that there are dangerous individuals and groups ~ within & outside of the country & its government ~ who are ready to shed their opponent's blood and to commit such tragic murders as Mrs. Bhutto's recent assassination ... in order to undermine rights & legitimate competition for power.

The possibility ~ or really, the probability ~ of 'rigged elections' being held in Pakistan in the near future is just another obvious example of the failure of its government to work for the best interests of its citizenry.

Well let's be fair, they need time to readjust the rigging equipment!
