Jay Leno kept the jokes coming his second night back on the air, even as the striking writers union and his network sparred over whether he was violating union rules by writing his monologues.

The Writers Guild of America had scolded the "Tonight Show" host earlier Thursday for penning and delivering punch lines in his first monologue in two months, aired on NBC the night before.

NBC quickly fired back, arguing Leno, a guild member, was right and the guild was wrong.

"The WGA agreement permits Jay Leno to write his own monologue for `The Tonight Show,'" NBC said in a statement. "The WGA is not permitted to implement rules that conflict with the terms of the collective bargaining agreement between the studios and the WGA."

I always wondered if Leno was funny enough to write his own material--and he is! (Who knew?)

The guy paid the show's entire staff out of pocket for two months. I think that should earn him a little slack from the union.

Let's celebrate all of the workers that can go back to work and get paychecks from the Tonight Show.

While the writers are asking for more money and along with mgmt holding everything up - lots and lots of other people are suffering with no paycheck and they won't get a thing from this strike.

I don't get it... Leno openly supports the guild, writes his own jokes, and get lambasted. Letterman, go bad to work with a full compliment of writers and you don't hear squat... Man, is this Union out to lunch...

I think he should write his own material, have the show in his garage or something, I think he can be funny all by his lonesomenessness, this
is a great chance for him to show off his
skills.

Here's an angle: Have a late-night teach-in
using all the goodies he's got in his garage
to demonstrate ethanol. Wouldn't that be wild?
I think you could have some laughs around
that concept, at OPEC's expense, even.
LOL

I'm no drooling fan of Leno, however, there is a point where I think that the rights and demands of a collective should not trespass over the rights of an individual. I am also flag waving socialist (as any good Canadian should be), and I have developed an ambivalent regard for the the heavy handedness of union heads - over both their members and the public. Nobody needs to be abused to make one's wants relevant.

Once again as always:

If Leno conceives of a joke in his mind, but does not put it on paper (or the teleprompter), is that considered "writing?"

Whatever finer distinctions exist in this argument re the WGA's and NBC's interpretations of the Minimum Basic Agreement, they become moot when Jay Leno - a WGA member - crosses a WGA picket line to go to work as a writer. Whatever Jay Leno has achieved in life is now moot - he is throwing it all away. His blue-collar parents would be ashamed of him. He doesn't know it yet, but he will never be forgiven for this betrayal.

Leno, quickly running out of material, turned to the comments section of the Huffington Post for fresh material. AmmoBob, RoilingDivision, Dendroica and other posters provided all the hilarious material he needed, and best of all, it was copyright free!
