Nicholas Negroponte, founder of a nonprofit initiative to sell low-cost laptops to developing countries, lashed out at Intel Corp., which he accused of trying to undermine the project by selling its own machines in the same markets even after joining the project's board in July.

Responding to the giant chipmaker's announcement Thursday that it was severing ties with the One Laptop Per Child project, Mr. Negroponte said, "They've been doing damage in the marketplace with countries since the day we started. And after we made peace with them, they did more damage."

The two sides had been feuding over Intel's aggressive marketing of the Classmate, a low-cost laptop of its own design, in many of the same countries the nonprofit had been targeting for its own device. That machine, called the XO, uses a microprocessor from Intel's chief competitor, Advanced Micro Devices Inc. In an interview, Mr. Negroponte accused Intel of trying to talk countries like Peru out of buying the OLPC machine, which recently began shipping.

Nicholas Negroponte has created a new PC sub-market: Children in 3rd world countries. That alone is great because it has created competition for a niche that didn't exist as a profit center 12 months ago in the PC business. And it's good that Intel and other PC maker don't cooperate because that means profits and competition and a better and cheaper OLPC equivalent. Negroponte's goal to enrich the human race is a winner!

I saw this guy do an interview on TV. It might have been on PBS or 60 minutes.

The impression that I formed was that this guy wants laptops for everybody - AS LONG AS THE'RE HIS LAPTOPS.

If he really cared about the children, then he would welcome intel entering the market and participating.

Unfortunately, it seems to be all about his ego to the point that if the children can't get HIS laptops, they shouldn't get any.

Nice idea, too much hubris.

The real question is, does the Intel laptop cost more than the OLPC laptop. If the price is same or lower, than more power to Intel. If its higher, than hopefully the buyer's market will prevail and the cheaper computer will win out. But the real question will be, which computer has the better hardware/software bang for the bucks.

This is the modern equivalent for "No guns for the Indians". Technology is the tool of the oppressor. This geek should have known his project was doomed from the beginning.

cant blame the man. Intel offered to help under the guise of wanting to gather enough intel to steal the ideas and then trample him so they can have all the profits for themselves. Its called American Capitalism. The kind of modern business ingenuity that American businesses and Politicians love and support. Stab anyone else in the back and do whatever you can to win out and make that profit. Its one of the things thats made America what it is today. See, there is no reason for any laws, regulations or Gov intervention in business. Those things only inhibit good old fashion criminal activities.

Is Intel hoping to skim the city children with volume deals that leave the poor kids who live in the country permanently poor and ignorant?

Hate to ascribe honor to a corporation, but have I erred in my judgment?
