Howling winds, pelting rain and heavy snow pummeled California on Friday, toppling trees, flipping big rigs, cutting power to more than a million people and threatening mudslides in fire-scarred areas.

Flights were grounded in Northern California as gusts reached 80 mph during the second wave of an arctic storm that sent trees crashing onto houses, cars and roads. Forecasters expected the storm to dump as much as 10 feet of snow in the Sierra Nevada by Sunday.

Looks like Arianna has been doing some more censoring. There are about 9 or 10 comments missing from the botton of this page that were there this morning. How very communistic of you Arianna.

Man made global warming is a hoax and censorship will not change that fact.

All those people without power will be good for the environment. Just think how much the environment will benefit from the reduction of 400,000 carbon footprints.

The deserts in the southwest are getting much needed rain.

There's a silver lining to these dark storm clouds!

As this global cooling cycle continues, we'll hear less from the enviro/lunitic/fringe until the self loathing becomes unbearable, and the green shroud and kool aid are the only options remaining. Do it, Al will meet you later in the mother ship.

Everybody talks about the weather, but nobody does anything about it.

It was a tough day in San Francisco, probably our worst storm in about six years. Wind was the biggest problem, gusts up to 75 mph, so near Category One force gales. Trees were down all over the place and it would have been a good day to stay home from work. But off I trudged to the Presidio where it was just miserable, pretty much full force of the storm. We had some minor flooding in the office and a few tree branches blocked our door and as we tried to clear them, we had a flock of pigeons, well five, just swoop in a take shelter in our offices. It was pretty funny, the poor birds were just overwhelmed by the storm. It took us a while to catch them and set them back to the wild.

I've lived in Connecticut, Oregon, California and I can say this, California was built -- human wise -- for the climate they expect and not the weather they get.

The people I feel sorry for are the folks that were affected by the fires this past fall. This storm will bring much needed water and snow, but it will also bring landslides.

FYI, we here in Oregon are also feeling the effects of this storm. I wish I could describe to you what it feels like when your house shudders because of high winds. Or the piercing feeling of wind driven rain on ice cold hands. Or the worry of how your horse is dealing with the weather because she doesn't want to come in from it.

It's not raining down here yet. We need the rain, but I cannot say I am overly eager as I live in a burn area. I already sandbagged and helped my neighbors, so we are ready. Good luck to all Californians.

Do you know how we call such a day here in the Pacific Northwest? Friday... ;)

Seriously, I hope everything is OK.
