For Sadou Brown in a Los Angeles suburb, the decisive victory of Senator Barack Obama in Iowa was a moment to show his 14-year-old son what is possible.

For Mike Duncan in Maryland, it was a sign that Americans were moving beyond rigid thinking about race.

So wait, is this a black issue, or not a black issue.

I thought HuffPo wanted their candidate running as a ...well, candidate.

Now they want to shore up "race."

I'm not black and I'm savoring Obama's victory. We have already lost so much trying to go along with the prevailing conventional wisdom of the day. Obama may now have a chance to put some action into his rhetoric and if so things will certainly be better than they are now which is more than I can say if Clinton were in charge.

For anyone liking some history here's a free movie about America and why the Republicans and Clinton ought not be in charges of things for some time to come.

All I can say is, that if Barack Obama is the Dem candidate in '08, the Dems will, sadly lose again -though the polls tend to be on their side. Why? Because the Republicans won't attack his race, but they will attack his lack of experience -he's on his first U.S. Senate term, that is all.. this talk about 'hope' & 'change' won't make a bit of difference w/the average American voter. Another thing, his stand on illegal aliens -from the last I heard, he wanted to give them Driver's Licenses and all the benefits of legal citizens -this does not play well w/most of the country at large. He will lose, and BIG. Now, before you call me a racist for saying such things.. just take a good look at the history of the Dem party & their candidates in past elections -for that is all you will need to know.

Mr. Hall, an electrical worker who said he had changed his party affiliation from Republican to support Mr. Obama, added, "Hopefully he can win and stay alive."

He said he felt Mr. Obama was the candidate who best represented him and understood his struggles.

"You know that ceiling," Mr. Hall said. "You"re not going to see it flashing back at you, but you know it"s up there. No matter how good, how smart, how much money you have. You"re going to see that ceiling that"s going to reflect and stop you.

"It"s the same ceiling that gets poor people, Hispanic people. It"s the same ceiling. I"m ready for someone to break that ceiling."
---------------------------------------------
Wow. Took him long enough. How can you see that ceiling and KEEP voting Republican?

EVERY EFFORT
EVERY ATTENTION, BY ALL BLACK AND HUMAN RIGHTS GROUPS, MUST BE PAID>
THERE WILL BE A GREAT EFFORT TO DENY BLACK PEOPLE THEIR RIGHT TO VOTE AS NEVER BEFORE!
We have seen Jin Crow and every sort of gerrymandering since the civil war.
THIS IS A NEW CIVIL WAR.
IT WILL NOT BE SOUTH AGAINST NORTH THIS TIME.
IT IS A HUMAN RIGHTS CRISIS THIS COUNTRY IS FACING.
FLORIDA was a warm up.
BLACK PEOPLE MUST BE SURE THEY WILL BE ABLE TO VOTE IN THE GENERAL ELECTION... BEFORE THE ELECTION!!!!
Every pastor, if they can call themselves that...must insure people insure their votes will be honored or there will be riots and strife as this country has never seen.

Over the past two days here in Washington, DC I've asked every person I had the opportunity the same question.. "So, do you think we'll have Obama as our next President?"

Of the 20 or so Black and Latino people I asked, everyone of them gave the same response. They look at me kind of sideways for a moment (I'm a White guy) and then say..."nah, I don't think the country is ready yet."

I then go into all the reasons that he has a great chance to win and it seems they usually begin to have some hope that he will.

I've gotten the same response from a few White folks, but more often they seem to think he has as good a chance as anyone.

It seems to me personally that we have the best chance in a long time to have a real dialogue on race in this country. I urge everyone to take advantage of it.

as an anglo canuck living in the u.s., i have marvelled at how any african-american could muster up any degree of patriotism for the nation that continues to disenfranchise and alienate them. i've sat beside af. am. friends at football games and wondered what goes through their minds when asked to stand for an anthem that was written in and for an era when their forefathers and foremothers were still enslaved. i'm not saying canada is perfect, not by a long stretch, but the mind boggles at the continuing racism, condescension and ill-will of many white americans. obama's candidacy might go some distance in paying a debt that can never be completely discharged.

For those of you who insist on clinging to this "Hussein" slur, I am reminded of my rural Michiganian kin that continue to use the n-word through this moment to similar effect and purpose, being inversely proportional to their collective number of remaining teeth.

But one of many reasons I do not associate with them, but I do digress...

I have seen it used here with increasing ferocity, and for the same purpose: to express the desparate, stupid, white-knuckle fear that has been shoved down our throats since we can remember.

You only use it because using the n-word would get you flagged and banned. Just bloody admit it.

Unfortunately, it seriously weakens the argument of those who would use either word, because it reveals an emotional age of 14, 15 tops. And it dishonors those who want to debate in good faith.

I invite you to grow up, and quickly. We do not have time for this sort of rediculous nonsense. Hussein! Who are you kidding?

That'd be no one.

Pax,
M.

Blacks savor Obamas victory? So they should!

All I say to that, " It's about time" and Obama is someone White or Black can be proud of.

I'm not on the Clinton or Obama wagon...or any others at this point. I'm still trying to figure it all out.

I would, however, like someone to tell me about the following:

Obama went to a Wahabi School when he was young. Wahabism is the RADICAL teaching followed by Muslim terrorists.
Obama will NOT recite the Pledge of Allegiance, nor will he hold his hand to his heart while it is being recited. When sworn into office, he used the Koran and not the Bible.

I live in Illinois, and do not know of a single thing he did for the state while in office. In fact, I never even heard of him until this race. I'm not saying that he'd never make a good president, but I have questions about him doing it now. He just never made a name for himself while serving in Illinois. I would like someone with more experience and more willingness to work on the hard issues.

These are all troubling things to me and I would just like to see these issues addressed. I tried to post this on Arianna's blog, but as expected, it did not get published.

Obama and Oprah are turning around the notion that racism is a major factor in the USA.

Oprah is the richest woman on Earth.

Obama is the front runner for the job as the most powerful person on Earth.

The color of their skin did not hold Oprah or Obama back - maybe there is somthing about the content of their character that sets them apart from many of the black folk who believe they can't get ahead.

While I am not an Obama supporter and while I will not support him in a general election, I am pleased that his candidacy seems to be moving the country beyond divisive racial politics.
