Durham, N.H. -- Hillary Clinton had planned to address two of her liabilities today -- her dismal level of support among young, well-educated voters, and her image of impermeability -- by holding a Q&A session with University of New Hampshire students, but her campaign entourage was, uncharacteristically, two hours late, sorely testing the patience of the 20 or so students waiting for her.

When Clinton did finally pull into the parking lot in front of the Bagelry here, Clinton told the remaining assembled students: "I particularly want to give young voters a chance to ask the questions they have," noting that the debate tonight is sponsored by Facebook, the networking site heavily used by students.

Clinton sought to portray her campaign as a vehicle for idealism, offering young voters the chance to participate in a crusade similar to the one Barack Obama now is seen as leading: "One of the reasons I am running for president is I love this country and I don't want to see it sort of slip away from us," she said. Clinton described in detail her efforts helping to negotiate a peace agreement in Northern Ireland and her work encouraging provision of services for refugees in Macedonia.

Over and over again, the former First Lady returned to the theme of youth.

In a critique of the Bush administration's tax and spending policies, Clinton warned the gathering that "the way the Bush policies will play out, this [the deficit and national debt] is all going to be dumped on you, the young generation."

Similarly, she told the students -- far outnumbered by members of the press and her staff -- that "if you look at the income data, this is the first time young people are on a trend to not do as well as their parents....we've got to get the economy producing jobs again."

With only three days to go before the New Hampshire primary, Clinton faces an uphill struggle, with long odds against making substantial inroads into Obama's support among young voters, if the Iowa results are any guide. As an indicator of the generational divide at work, Obama got his degree from Harvard Law School in 1991; Clinton graduated from Yale Law School in 1973.

Network entrance polls from the January 3 Iowa caucuses showed Barack Obama crushing Clinton by a 5 to 1 margin, 57-11, among voters aged 17 to 29, a development that has become particularly damaging this year, with Iowa demonstrating that young voters are turning out in far higher percentages than in past contests.

I'm an old man, part of that old generation, and I am disgusted with them.

Look at all these old candidates - they are stiffs. They are running on the past because they can only see themselves as part of the past.

My generation had everything done for them. We were born into a great nation, the leader of the free world.

What did we do with it? We have ruined it. We have left a shrinking economy, a failing infrastructure, and a divisive politics, and stolen elections.

And now? This hideous illegal war in Iraq, the inhuman disaster of Katrina, self-strangulation by relying on fossil fuels, and complete ignorance of the ecological crisis heading straight for our shores.

This administration has set the pattern for the erosion and destruction of democracy all round the world.

Time for change? YOU BET - the next generation has to push my generation out of the way.

You have to take the country back, take it away from my generation. We have squandered everything that was given to us.

My generation is a disgrace.

Young people - remember how silent the Senate was when the rush to war was pounding the airwaves.

Remember how they passed the treasonous "patriot" act WITHOUT EVEN READING IT.

Remember how few spoke up at the erasure of habeus corpus and the Geneva Conventions.

Throw off the politics of hatred. The future is yours.

If I have one thing to say ... THINK FOR YOURSELVES.

Your headline implies that Hillary's interaction with the students did not go well. Did you poll them? Did you compare how they felt about Clinton before and then after the meeting? I would like to see some evidence of your claim that she "fell flat." Everything I read informs me that H. Clinton is quite engaging in small groups.

I am a high school teacher. I definitely see more excitement toward Obama than Clinton from my students. But your article seems biased to me.

The young voters in Iowa are not just Iowans. Any out of state student who registers to vote in Iowa, has their vote counted (this is not the same for most other states). It is true that a lot of young voters came out for Obama, but given the large number of students in Iowa (who are not even Iowa citizens), it seems that the number is skewed.

'"One of the reasons I am running for president is I love this country and I don't want to see it sort of slip away from us," she said.'

Has she done one thing in seven years to keep this country from slipping away from us? No. Did she ever speak out against the Bush administration, a voice that I think might have had considerable impact had it been raised? No. And Bill was off hobnobbing with Bush, Sr. in Maine!

'Clinton described in detail her efforts helping to negotiate a peace agreement in Northern Ireland and her work encouraging provision of services for refugees in Macedonia.'

How about human services for Americans? Did she show any outrage at all for the people dispossessed by Katrina? Did she make any effort to broker a peace with Iraq?

Has she got ANY idea what being President of this country is going to entail now that she has helped the Republicans loot and destroy it?

Clueless. Totally clueless. Power corrupts, as they say.

And can I second the various people who have asked what happened to #2 in Iowa? John Edwards, more than anybody else in this campaign, has been totally submarined by the press.

I believe she could have saved her candicacy if she would have had a vision different from her husbands and the current administration. As one of the first viable female candidates she offered nothing new and maybe even was seen as retro, good for fashion but not politics. She is smart but her reliance on her husband and his old advisors did not serve her well. I think most voters, young, old, black, white, rich or poor see her as Bush in drag. What the country needs now is change and hope. She offers neither.

Why would a young voter want to vote for essentially their Grandmother when they have a Obama who is part of their world to vote for?

Do you honestly think that the Clintons and the Bushes are that different? They vacation together, for christ's sake. Hillary is losing becuase the information age is catching up to the hidden establishment. Too many people know too much about how the club works, and we don't approve.

Hillary fell flat when she thought being the wife of Bill Clinton and running in NY would mean that America likes her. She never got back up from day one on this absurd quest she has been on. I am so glad she is losing.

her message to "young voters" basically comes down to, "people like me really screwed you over. get used to it. as your monarch, I will make your sorry asses work politically for magnanimous handouts. you all better start to get real about who's in charge here, or I'll draft your ass and send you to Iran."

I think Hillary has a real uphill battle with young people. First, they were not paying any attention to the Clinton Presidency unless, perhaps, Bill's fooling around caught their ear. I suspect that Hillary comes across like that teacher you had in high school that kept reminding her students that she was smarter than they were, better organized and that they better pay attention to her if they wanted to make it in the world. She just isn't all that likeable. You always feel like she is lecturing you. By the way, this is coming from someone in her so called age/gender support base. Hillary and I are almost the same age.

Too bad Hillary can't say "I voted against the Patriot Act. I vote against empowering Bush to invade Iraq. I always voted my for what I knew was right."

Democrats don't have to hate the two top candidates who don't make the nomination. Hillary and John are KNOWN commodities, and Iowa said LOUD & CLEAR...no thanks.

That doesn't mean Edwards couldn't be a great Attorney General and Hillary as Leader of the Senate.

O is more conservative/corporate but also more political than the rest - note his real belief is agnostic per link-but he joined church for contacts (called commmunity in article)
http://www.guardian.co.uk/uselections08/comment/story/0,,2235747,00.html

that political skill may well mean he is more electable once he gets buy in by the base - and it seems he's accomplished the Base getting on board part of the campaign (leading in latest ARG NH poll 38/26/20 for O/H/E http://www.americanresearchgroup.com /)

The college kids were half the crowd today in that 2000 person event - and they do not see anything other than someone younger than the average that is an obvious "change" - the lack of much political change really coming as in a non-universal universal health care with a medicare like option that you know he doesn't believe in and will toss as he claims it must go to get passage, the con of taking money from lobbyist families - just not lobbyists - etc. - all seem to flow off him like water on a duck - thanks to sites like Huff of course, but he seems as slick as Reagan - albeit without Reagan's belief in the core principles of his party's base.

HUFFPO wanted to MAKE A PRESIDENT, that's the reason their so-called journalists in this website are pulling all kinds of crap even if they knew they're lying to make Obama win. The problem is this, Obama can't win against ANY Republican candidates in general election.

Huffpo should make an endorsement for Obama, this website promotes Obama like a Messiah.

EMPTY SUIT IS FULL OF RHETORIC BUT MISERABLY LACKING IN SUBSTANCE!
