Sunday's Print Run Of Parade Intimates That Benazir Bhutto Is Still Alive

In a moment worthy of 'Dewey Beats Truman,' Sunday's Parade Magazine went out in newspapers all across the country with a blaring cover headline: "'I Am What The Terrorists Most Fear': Is Benazir Bhutto America's best hope against al-Qaeda?" Uhm...we sure hope not!

The article inside begins with an interior sub-headline that reads, "As Benazir Bhutto seeks a return to power, Tuesday's election in Pakistan could profoundly affect the fight against terrorism," and quotes supporters of Bhutto who chant, "Long live Benazir!" What it does not contain is any acknowledgment, anywhere, that Bhutto died ten days ago.

In a demonstration of why print media is dying a slow gurgling death, Parade's website does manage to acknowledge the fact that Bhutto was assassinated with the following statement, which only adds more confusion:

The assassination of Pakistan's Benazir Bhutto on Dec. 27 occurred after PARADE's Jan. 6 issue went to press.

Bhutto's murder adds more danger and confusion to the already chaotic situation in this region. Pakistan is vital to U.S. security interests and the global fight against terrorism. In late November, PARADE sent Contributing Editor and best-selling author Gail Sheehy to Pakistan to interview former Prime Minister Bhutto as she campaigned through the country. Bhutto told Sheehy that she had long been a target of terrorists as well as the Musharraf government. She knew she could be murdered at any time.

PARADE's Jan. 6 interview with Bhutto is one of the last interviews of her complex life.

After her assassination, PARADE immediately posted the entire interview online, and Sheehy appeared on network and cable TV news shows to discuss her face-to-face conversations with Bhutto.

So, Sheehy went to Pakistan back in November, the website was opportunistically updated on the day of her death, but nobody thought that the print article ought to be pulled in light of its inaccuracy? That makes about as much sense as referring to the article as a "Jan. 6 interview" in the correction.

Fittingly, one of the other heavily promoted online stories is titled, "Why Do We Forget Things?" Tune in next week, when Parade offers their expert analysis on whether John Edwards can prevail in the Iowa Caucus!

Parade magazine is Metamucil for the verbally constipated. It's Ensure for the feeble and weak; it's the equivalent of Reader's Digest: useless, pointless human interest fluff masquerading as news, as substance.

It would be great to simply see this 'insert' go bye-bye permanently.

The SF Chronicle had a small article, on the front page I believe, saying that the magazine had been printed prior to her death. I still think it was tacky that they left it as it was.

To be fair, you can't compare the speed of Internet to print. Print serves a different purpose. I will personally keep the magazine as a keepsake of this interesting and tragic time in history.

I read the whole article in disbelief. The whole thing was written as if she were still alive!. Who are these idiots to even pretend they are trying to "educate" America on world events. The week before that was the chimpie in full grin talking about his wonderful moment of the year. Of course it involved using a wounded soldier as a prop and exclaiming how he was "inspired" by the guy. "Parade" needs to be "Paraded" out of Sunday papers all across the country.

I read the article, mainly because I thought
what the heck is this, but even Parade realizes
this woman was worth covering.
Funny how no one questioned Martin Luther King
marching when he had to have known his life
could end at any moment. But Ms. Bhutto can come
back home amid death threats, greet her supporters through the roof of her car, and get
criticized for putting herself in danger. Both
people, even with whatever human faults they
may have had, believed what they were doing was
right. And we still take time to recognize MLK
every year.

Fire the editor.

What a lame, embarrassing display of someone NOT in control.

....in the age of electronic information like the Internet, is it any wonder why print media is losing readership when they do crap like this??

If it was already printed then there wasn't much they could do. But you then have to wonder how the "update" got in.

The only way anyone would know that the latest issue of Parade had pulled a gaffe would be for someone to read it. But, if you could read with comprehension, why would you read Parade? Something of a Paradox there, don't you think...but then, if you read Parade how could the term thinking come into the equation. Marilynn vos Savant? Can you help me here?

I was really surprised to see Sunday's Parade running the article but realized it was printed long ago. However... my one, big question is why didn't they (Parade) add a one-page insert acknowledging Bhutto's death and telling the readers why they chose to run the article anyway.
Would have added accuracy and integrity to this episode.

Back in 1963, the weekend that JFK was killed, Parade ran an article as if he had not been assassinated. They did not apologize, explaining that they had gone to press two weeks earlier. This is the same situation. Just because the subject of a story is killed or died, does not mean that the story is not relevant. We are not morons. We know that Bhutto was killed. we know that the information that was presented was out of date. nonetheless, the story lends some insight as to why she was killed. As gaffes go, this was not one. It was a fine story that should be read by anyone concerned with Pakistan.

What a joke the print media are! They could have dumped this preprinted Parade but didn't because truth and journalism mean NOTHING to these people.

Gaffe? Please. The article honored her memory and the power of a strong woman's passion for life and liberty.

It's not "irresponsible journalism." It is an unfortunate occupational hazard of these weekly inserts, which are written and printed weeks (maybe even months)in advance and inserted into daily newspapers printed the night before. There is no logistical way the magazine could have pulled the story. Newspapers probably were reluctant to pull the magazine because of contracts. Your readers should keep in mind that these magazines are separately written and edited from the newspapers in which they are inserted.

Those magazines inserted into the Sunday paper aren't "news" ... they're human interest. That's why we go online to get the bleeding edge news, go to television & radio for stuff we read online 2 days ago, and newspapers for 3 days old stories. The magazines? Hardly news at all. Comics and human interest. If the magazine had printed a big "she's dead", it wouldn't have been news anyways ... just human interest.
