Former Secretary of State Colin Powell appeared Monday on PBS's season premier of "Tavis Smiley" to share his views about the Barack Obama phenomenon, as well as recent global developments, including the assassination of Pakistan opposition leader Benazir Bhutto, the military situation in Iraq and social unrest in Kenya. Powell also discussed his successful recovery after undergoing prostate cancer treatment.

On the eve of the New Hampshire primaries, Powell reflected on his experience eight years ago when faced with the decision of whether or not to run for president. He told Smiley that he is "taking joy" in the Illinois senator's success, and encouraged Americans to "enjoy this moment where a person like Barack Obama can knock down all of these old barriers that people thought existed with respect to the opportunities that are available to African Americans."

The first African American to hold titles such as National Security Advisor, Secretary of State and Chairman of the Joint Chiefs, Powell offered this advice to the Democratic presidential candidate who may be accomplishing yet another first: "This argument about him not being black enough, that's just absolute nonsense. He is putting himself forward not as a black man but as an American man who wants to be president of the United States of America. We should see Barack as a candidate for president who happens to be black, and not a black candidate for president."

Who gives a double F what the self-dishonored Powell says about anything? He tossed himself on the trash heap of history when he perjured himself in order to facilitate a war---a war!---that he knew was wrong, immoral, and illegal. Self-abasement is so ugly, especially in someone who had been held in great esteem as an honorable person. One wonders how he can live with himself, but apparently he has no more conscience than anyone else on the Right.

Colin Power - knelt and kissed Zionists' feet; sold Palestinians rights; lied about Iraq - thus poured innocent US and Iraq blood for these human right abusers.

Colin Powell refuses to apologize and confess for his murderous deeds for Bush/Cheney.
Why? Should there be forgiveness without him showing penitence?

You lied to America about Iraq.
You lied to the United Nations about Iraq.

You are complicit in the death of tens of thousands of people.

You sold your soul and your credibility to George Bush for a few pieces of silver.

Go away.

If you put things into historical context, Powell was held in high regard by the citizenry of this country: that in and of itself gave his opinion great weight. No, more than that, it was HIS voice that tipped the scale in favor of authorization for war.

For all intents and purposes, it was Powell's testimony that swayed our congress to support the Authorization, because he was viewed as an honest, honorable man. If Powell said it was so, it had to be so. Turned out, he was neither. It was not the Bush, Cheney, Rice mouth-machine that gave credence to war with Iraq, IT WAS POWELL.

Why are Obama and Powell referred to as "black", when they both are as white as they are black?

I just can see Obama naming him again secretay of Defense. lololol Lord please bless America and make them wake up. If you are a true democrat and american you will vote for Edward or Clinton. But not for someone who before he ever becomes president phones Kenya and tries to intervene in their politics. This will come to haunt him once he confronts McCaine.

Can Obama epair Powell's disgraceful damage to America?

It's not his burden - no one can undo the harm that Powell's lies did to us and to the Iraqi people. The crime of Iraq is on Powell's shoulders!

Can Obama bring hope back to us? If he wins the presidency and if he surrounds himself with competent advisors of all parties, he can!

Powell was apparently involved helping cover up the infamous Mei Lei massacre during the Vietnam War as well. That was the worst recorded atrocity committed by American troops.
How does this monster still find supporters and admirers?
Who in their right mind (except a neo-con) would want to be endorced by him?

If Powell had any honor remaining he would give the full story of his involvement, including whose orders he was following and what was actual known about the intelligence, when he addressed the UN. And, do it before this administration's term expires by whatever means.
Until he does this, his opinions on presidential qualifications are about as relevant as Skillings' thoughts on the Attorney General.

To those who are still knocking Powell: he did a really bad thing in representing the Bush doctrine, but he also paid the price for it. We don't need to keep kicking him. That would be cruel on our part. That doesn't mean, however, that if it can be shown that he deliberately lied at the UN, he shouldn't be prosecuted. Please excuse the last, somewhat convoluted, sentence.

i am so damned happy to know that the same duplicitous mega-asshole who went before the U.N. and the world, waving around little vials of nothing and presenting tons of other "conclusive" evidence about WMD in iraq which he KNEW to be flimsy at best, is experiencing a bit of "joy"

that feeling of "joy" must surely be in short supply for someone who knowingly flushed his entire career, his dignity, his reputation and his morals down the toilet so that 4000 American soldiers and 600,000 innocent Iraqis (and counting) could be dead for no other reason than naked greed and warmongering hatred

enjoy your joy, colin ...

Yes but Mr.Powell you've "lied" to the public so many times in the past and on such serious and deadly issues, why should anything you now say be given any credence what so ever???

So good to notice the mood is moving on to impress those of the establishment who can truly springboard Obama's success. My guess is he isn't the only one and soon enough the news will be spilling over with other more conservative types who wouldn't want to risk being embarrassed if they were quoted about their feelings about something as noteworthy.
I just wish I could see the faces of those others who feel they need to be induldged with having their asses kissed to persuade them to do something for someone besides themselves.
From where I'm sitting they can kiss my ass cause there ain't a damn thing they can do about this historical moment to stop it. Bwahahahaha!
