In what U.S. officials called a serious provocation, Iranian boats harassed and provoked three U.S. Navy ships in the strategic Strait of Hormuz, threatening to explode the American vessels.

U.S. forces were on the verge of firing on the Iranian boats in the early Sunday incident, when the boats _ believed to be from the Iranian Revolutionary Guard's navy _ turned and moved away, a Pentagon official said. "It is the most serious provocation of this sort that we've seen yet," said the official, who spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak on the record. Defense Department spokesman Bryan Whitman called it a "serious incident. This is something that deserves an explanation."

Iran's Foreign Ministry said on Monday that the weekend incident was "something normal" and was resolved.

National Security Council spokesman Gordon Johndroe said the United States urges the Iranians "to refrain from such provocative actions that could lead to a dangerous incident in the future."

The incident occurred at about 5 a.m. local time Sunday as Navy cruiser USS Port Royal, destroyer USS Hopper and frigate USS Ingraham were on their way into the Persian Gulf and passing through the strait _ a major oil shipping route.

Five small boats began charging the U.S. ships, dropping boxes in the water in front of the ships and forcing the U.S. ships to take evasive maneuvers, the Pentagon official said.

There were no injuries but the official said there could have been, because the Iranian boats turned away "literally at the very moment that U.S. forces were preparing to open fire" in self defense.

The official said he didn't have the precise transcript of communications that passed between the two forces, but said the Iranians radioed something like "we're coming at you and you'll explode in a couple minutes."

At the State Department, spokesman Sean McCormack said he was not aware of any plans to lodge a formal protest.

"Without specific reference to this incident in the Strait of Hormuz, the United States will confront Iranian behavior where it seeks to do harm either to us or to our friends and allies in the region," McCormack told reporters. "There is wide support for that within the region and certainly that's not going to change."

Whitman said the Pentagon will work with State and National Security Council officials to determine "the appropriate way to address this with the Iranian government."

The U.S. vessels were in international waters, making a normal transit into the Gulf, Whitman said, adding that the Iranian boats were operating at "distances and speeds that showed reckless and dangerous intent _ reckless, dangerous and potentially hostile intent."

He said the episode lasted 15 to 20 minutes but wouldn't say whether officials know for certain whether the were vessels were Iranian Revolutionary Guard or regular Iranian navy. The Revolutionary Guard forces have been known to be more aggressive than the regular navy.

"At least some were visibly armed. Small Iranian fastboats made some aggressive maneuvers against our vessels and indicated some hostile intent," Whitman.

Historical tensions between the two nations have increased in recent years over Washington's charge that Tehran has been developing nuclear weapons and supplying and training Iraqi insurgents using roadside bombs _ the No. 1 killer of U.S. troops in Iraq.

In another incident off its coast, Iranian Revolutionary Guard sailors last March captured 15 British sailors and held them for nearly two weeks.

The 15 sailors from HMS Cornwall, including one woman, were captured on March 23. Iran claims the crew, operating in a small patrol craft, had intruded into Iranian waters _ a claim Britain denied.

The weekend incident came as President Bush prepared for his first major trip to the Middle East. While scheduled to meet the leaders of Israel, Egypt, Saudi Arabia and other regional nations Jan. 9-16, Bush is expected to try to bolster the troubled peace process between Israel and the Palestinians but is also likely to seek backing for U.S. concerns about Iran.

At about this time last year, Bush announced he was sending a second aircraft carrier to the Gulf region in a show of force against Iran. The U.S. Navy quietly scaled back to one carrier group several months later. But while the two were there, they staged two major exercises off Iran's coast.

The war games amounted to U.S. muscle-flexing at a time when Tehran increasingly was at loggerheads with the international community over its disputed nuclear program and threatened to close the strategic Strait of Hormuz for oil transports in case of a U.S. military strike on Iran.

Since then, there have been diplomatic overtures aimed at calming tensions.

The United States maintains nearly 40,000 troops in Gulf countries other than Iraq, with the largest group in Kuwait and others in Qatar, Bahrain, the United Arab Emirates, Oman and Saudi Arabia.

If Iran were to send two nuclear armed carrier groups to within 12 miles of our shore, what do you think we would do? I guarantee, it wouldn't be pretty.

Clearly, our doing the same to them has different rules. And this is the definition of hypocrisy, when rules applied to one, don't apply to the other. But hey, we're Americans, enough said. Our rules only apply to us, not to anyone else, unless of course, they're our allies....and they buy weapons from us.

Sorry, All. Didn't mean to repeat the post so many times. The system seems to be glitching since last night. Can't get the 'Reply' button to work, so posted fresh, but I had only hit the 'Preview' several times and it seems to have posted each time. I did report this to Huffpo.

"No, just wanted to mess with ya."

Seems you do a lot of that. Lot of huff and puff, name calling, childish, deliberately hurtful behavior. Using up a lot of space and dissipating the constructive energy. Not much substance overall. Interesting pattern... Would you, by any chance, just be here to serve as a distraction?... Methinks very possibly yes. Well, I don't plan to contribute to enabling you. Just wanted to make the others aware of this possibility.

Should read:

"American navy craps their panties after being attacked by Iranian ski-boats armed with white boxes. Then calls press make them stop".

Mahahahaha.

If a US warship is under threat than the crew have the right to defend themselves against any attack. With that said Senator Jim Webb stated several months ago there were so many battle groups steaming around the Gulf that a confrontation was very likely. Jim Webb a former Marine and Navy Cross winner, as well as Secretary of the Navy under Regan, knows what’s he’s talking about.

Another point I would add is the strafing by both Israeli aircraft and patrol boats during the 67 war off the coast of Lebanon of a US flagged, unarmed surveillance vessel, the USS Liberty, killing and wounding more than half it’s crew. By the accounts of the survivors, the US colors were clearly visible. A call for help to a US aircraft carrier, whose fighters were only 15 minutes away were ignored, yet the attack lasted for hours, while the Liberty was helpless and burning. The crew recounts to this day, the Israeli patrol boats machine gun life rafts, after they thrown over the side. The incident was covered up, the crew silenced, and the Liberty eventually scraped.

More recently during the Lebanon conflict, Israeli fighter-bombers destroyed a UN observation post flying a UN flag with 500 lb bombs killing the 3 UN observers inside. The pilots claimed that a rocket launcher was hidden behind the complex. If that were so, why weren’t helicopter gun ships deployed? A friend of mine, also a retired Canadian surveillance officer who served in Lebanon for many years knew the Canadian solider killed in the bunker. It goes without saying that he is none to happy with the Israeli air force.

Why is it when Israel attacks an US flagged surveillance vessel the incident was covered up? When a UN flagged observation post is destroyed the incident is past off as a mistake. US pilots attacked British vehicles during the opening of Iraqi Freedom; based on the radio transmissions the pilots were devastated, that’s a mistake. Why is Israel cut so much slack and Iran demonized?

The last thing the Iranians or the US need is a bloody confrontation. As such there will be no 'Gulf of Tonkin' nor will the Iranians risk an escalated response. This is just a lopsided chest-thumping competition between the greatest navy on Earth and a backwater emasculated Iranian force incapable of defending it's own shoreline.

Both the USA and Iran have unpopular leaders hoping that a war blamed on the other side will rally the citizens to the cause and keep their party in power.

Will the people be fooled again?
Alas probably.

MEANWHILE in another parallel universe the commander of an Iranian task force operating just outside Chesapeake Bay claimed that they were being provoked by the US 5th fleet.

“I just saw the video from CBS and it's so ridiculous to think that these little Iranian boats can go against our warships. I guess when you're looking to get yourself in a war, it doesn't matter if the current bogeyman has a slingshot and the other guy has a tank.”

Typical obsolete American thinking.

You feel that because we spend more on our military and defense than all the other nations of the world combined; that because we have the latest in MONSTER MILITARY MIGHT, that this makes us unbeatable. Coyote says this is a very foolish position.

Remember that snake of armored trucks and troops moving down the desert highway on its way to invade Baghdad in 2003? An awesome sight of BILLIONS of dollars worth of equipment needed to take the capital city. Remember how it had to stop and WAIT FOR THE FUEL TRUCKS TO CATCH UP?

Some of those monsters of war consumed, not 5 miles to a gallon of fuel, but 5 GALLONS TO A MILE, and the fuel trucks could not keep up demand. The entire parade had to stop and wait for fuel.

And furthermore, what did we learn in Iraq, except that a 100 million dollar war machine could be shut down with an inexpensive IED. That the best weaponry in the world cannot win the kind of urban warfare the twenty-first century will bring.

Do I need to say more, (perhaps about the Islamist's willingness to die) or are you already getting a good sense of where this is going? Future war will be based on lightweight, small, compact and disposable machines with one or two operators. The Chinese will build the armed forces of the future; ours are as heavy and obsolete as the ships sunk at Pearl Harbor were in their time.
