In what U.S. officials called a serious provocation, Iranian boats harassed and provoked three U.S. Navy ships in the strategic Strait of Hormuz, threatening to explode the American vessels.

U.S. forces were on the verge of firing on the Iranian boats in the early Sunday incident, when the boats _ believed to be from the Iranian Revolutionary Guard's navy _ turned and moved away, a Pentagon official said. "It is the most serious provocation of this sort that we've seen yet," said the official, who spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak on the record. Defense Department spokesman Bryan Whitman called it a "serious incident. This is something that deserves an explanation."

Iran's Foreign Ministry said on Monday that the weekend incident was "something normal" and was resolved.

National Security Council spokesman Gordon Johndroe said the United States urges the Iranians "to refrain from such provocative actions that could lead to a dangerous incident in the future."

The incident occurred at about 5 a.m. local time Sunday as Navy cruiser USS Port Royal, destroyer USS Hopper and frigate USS Ingraham were on their way into the Persian Gulf and passing through the strait _ a major oil shipping route.

Five small boats began charging the U.S. ships, dropping boxes in the water in front of the ships and forcing the U.S. ships to take evasive maneuvers, the Pentagon official said.

There were no injuries but the official said there could have been, because the Iranian boats turned away "literally at the very moment that U.S. forces were preparing to open fire" in self defense.

The official said he didn't have the precise transcript of communications that passed between the two forces, but said the Iranians radioed something like "we're coming at you and you'll explode in a couple minutes."

At the State Department, spokesman Sean McCormack said he was not aware of any plans to lodge a formal protest.

"Without specific reference to this incident in the Strait of Hormuz, the United States will confront Iranian behavior where it seeks to do harm either to us or to our friends and allies in the region," McCormack told reporters. "There is wide support for that within the region and certainly that's not going to change."

Whitman said the Pentagon will work with State and National Security Council officials to determine "the appropriate way to address this with the Iranian government."

The U.S. vessels were in international waters, making a normal transit into the Gulf, Whitman said, adding that the Iranian boats were operating at "distances and speeds that showed reckless and dangerous intent _ reckless, dangerous and potentially hostile intent."

He said the episode lasted 15 to 20 minutes but wouldn't say whether officials know for certain whether the were vessels were Iranian Revolutionary Guard or regular Iranian navy. The Revolutionary Guard forces have been known to be more aggressive than the regular navy.

"At least some were visibly armed. Small Iranian fastboats made some aggressive maneuvers against our vessels and indicated some hostile intent," Whitman.

Historical tensions between the two nations have increased in recent years over Washington's charge that Tehran has been developing nuclear weapons and supplying and training Iraqi insurgents using roadside bombs _ the No. 1 killer of U.S. troops in Iraq.

In another incident off its coast, Iranian Revolutionary Guard sailors last March captured 15 British sailors and held them for nearly two weeks.

The 15 sailors from HMS Cornwall, including one woman, were captured on March 23. Iran claims the crew, operating in a small patrol craft, had intruded into Iranian waters _ a claim Britain denied.

The weekend incident came as President Bush prepared for his first major trip to the Middle East. While scheduled to meet the leaders of Israel, Egypt, Saudi Arabia and other regional nations Jan. 9-16, Bush is expected to try to bolster the troubled peace process between Israel and the Palestinians but is also likely to seek backing for U.S. concerns about Iran.

At about this time last year, Bush announced he was sending a second aircraft carrier to the Gulf region in a show of force against Iran. The U.S. Navy quietly scaled back to one carrier group several months later. But while the two were there, they staged two major exercises off Iran's coast.

The war games amounted to U.S. muscle-flexing at a time when Tehran increasingly was at loggerheads with the international community over its disputed nuclear program and threatened to close the strategic Strait of Hormuz for oil transports in case of a U.S. military strike on Iran.

Since then, there have been diplomatic overtures aimed at calming tensions.

The United States maintains nearly 40,000 troops in Gulf countries other than Iraq, with the largest group in Kuwait and others in Qatar, Bahrain, the United Arab Emirates, Oman and Saudi Arabia.

Starting a war with Iran in the present situation would be like rolling the dices. They're not in the same league as the US military, that's for sure. But they have enough muscle to inflict a lot of damage to american interests in the Middle East. Unlike Iraq, Iran is not isolated. They have friends.

I think the fact that we cannot trust our government to tell the truth says more about this incident than anything. Whatever they say, I assume their lying, because there's a LOT of money to be made supplying the war machine. Hell, we spend as much on "defense" as the rest of the world combined...and yet, moron politicians (of both sides) say we're not strong enough! We're the largest weapons manufacturer in the history of the world, often supplying all sides of a conflict with the weapons required to make war easy, and somehow we're weak...but at least we have the moral highground!

This country is an ancient war whore, and it's just about as attractive in that respect as a 100 year old whore who tips the scales at 500 pounds! And yet, there are still people in this country who thinks she's a hot Mama! This is a very sick country...and there is no universal health care to fix the problem.

The new 220MPH torpedo has no known counter measure.

The Iranians have already tested it.

It is based on the Russian-made VA-111 Shkval

What are the US ships doing so close to Iran?

They were SPYING and meddling in the internal affairs of a sovereign country in order to gain some "intelligence" to be used against Iran and its people.

Whatever information the CIA/Military spies get will no doubt be turned over to Israel.

If foreign gunboats start steaming under the Golden Gate Bridge into San Francisco Bay and U.S. naval vessels immediately confront them, who should be most blamed for recklessly endangering the peace? Who then is actually most guilty of provoking a dangerous conflict with Iran when huge, powerful American naval strike forces stream through the Straits of Hormuz into the Persian Gulf? Bush and Cheney have already proven their incompetence as wartime leaders and they must not be allowed to start a war with Iran!

The skipper of the U.S.S. Vincennes shot down an Iranian airliner in 1988. The Iranians sunk the U.S.S. Stark beforehand and people were getting nervous. It happened with the Soviets where MIGs buzzed us in the Bering Strait. It wasn't even reported because it was so commonplace.

Iran admits that there was a buzzing by the speedboats. Putin has been flying nuclear-armed bombers very close to NATO-controlled space since the idea of installing the missile shield in Poland and the radar in the Czech Republic.

This is what happens when the brinkmanship escalates. The danger of a nuclear war grows each day.

When Einstein figured out that E=MC2 the human race was doomed. He told FDR that people were too stupid and lacked enough wisdom as a species to handle that kind of destructive force.

Edwards has the guts to seek nuclear disarmament
Hillary wants to nuke Pakistan. Is Obama a nuclear fan despite his let's all just get along rhetoric?

These close calls are becoming more common in this confrontation. The Middle East needs to be a nuclear-free zone. The rest of the world needs to disarm. This is "keeping alive" to have "hope."

Who is the provocateur? Those ships are based in Bahrain. Is there really a need to have a navy the world over? An air force the world over? An army the world over?

The United States is an empire and it's time the world wake up to that fact. The United States has troops in 130 countries worldwide on some 730 bases. Why?

One can make the argument that maintaining free passage through the Straits of Hormuz is a desirable goal for the world but why is it the sole responsibility of the United States to do so? Frankly, I do even buy the rights of passage argument as these international waterways have never been unimpeded.

That there are still pirates on the high seas, true enough. But pirates on the high seas do not require frigates the world over. Piracy occurs primarily in four areas of the world: 50% of it in the South China Seas, another 20% of it in the Indian Ocean off the coast of Somalia down to Tanzania. The balance of it is split between the Red Sea, the Andaman Sea, the Banda Sea, the Bight of Guinea and the Mosquito Coast.

While the US does buy oil from the Middle East, the bulk of Saudi and Iranian oil goes to Europe and Japan. Why do we not see European fleets based in Bahrain, Kuwait, Qatar or Oman? Only the US has bases in all of those four nations.

If the goal is preserve the freedom of the seas shouldn't that task by done by United Nations rather than unilaterally assumed by the United States?

The Bush Regime has another year left to start more wars, bring about more death, suffering, and misery. Don't count them out.

My unfortunate recollection is that each of the top 3 Dem candidates previously chanted the Aipac mantra that they thought the real danger came from Iran -- apparently understanding that a willingness to nuke Iran is one of the prerequisites for running for president.

So let's see how this shakes out. Hillary already voted for war against Iran. What will Obama do? He's running big on the fact he opposed the attacks on Iraq. Will he stick with his principles and oppose a war against Iran? Do any of these politicians have any principles? And what about Edwards?

We know all the Republicans would love another war. War creates fear creates a willingness of the public to take away everyone's rights, and to want to vote for little fascists for president. Which means vote for Republicans.

And then there is George W. Bush's bff Osama bin Laden. Do we think Rove has some "message" from Osama, saying American should support the Democrats because they're weak? It's a long long way to November of 2008. This is fun so far, but I hope it doesn't end in another tragedy.

I just saw the video from CBS and it's so ridiculous to think that these little boats can go against those warships, unless all those idiots are ready to do suicide missions. I guess when you're looking to get yourself in a war, it doesn't matter if the current bogeyman has a slingshot and the other guy has a tank.

Hey, how do WE deal with the Iranian war ships that Patrol the waterways of the great lakes?
Do we ever get too close to them or freak out when they get too close to strategic areas?

Doh! That's right. There Aren't any!
