From Brian Williams' NBC News interview with Barack Obama:

BRIAN WILLIAMS: So many discussions of you come back around to the ugly topic of personal safety. A lot of the young people in your crowds don't know the fear, American crowds-- guys our age, do you find yourself ever looking for a face in the crowd? Is it-- is it an issue that's ever-present in your life and in-- in your marriage, in your relationships?

BARACK OBAMA: Well, it-- it's not something that I think about on a day-to-day basis. Now, I-- I have a-- a Secret Service detail at this point. So it-- it's hard to pretend that you don't have--

(OVERTALK)

BRIAN WILLIAMS: There's a reason--

BARACK OBAMA: --big guys-- who are packing-- around you at all times. You know, but it's not something that I-- that I am thinking about on an ongoing basis.

I think that every presidential candidate, certainly every president these days-- is a potential target. And that comes with the job. And you take the precautions that are necessary and then you go about your business.

Why is it that the innocent have to be afraid? Obama has Secret Service protection for a reason - a sad commentary on America. The Blessing is that Obama's legitimate candidacy is a proud moment in American History. We were due for a proud moment.

I see your sexist heckler, and raise you threats against my personal safety.

Really, is debating the real issues that face everyday americans that scary? I don't think Obama is going to be dragged behind a pickup truck in Texas anymore than Hillary is going to be intimidated by any sexual harrasment. Maybe she will get a neck rub from George Bush, but the real threats the country faces are from the corporations that fund these candidates.

The giggling murderous scoundrel in the White House is more hated right now!

Exxon and Mossad are on it.

I think the Obama team is more aware of the possible danger than any of us. I try not to worry about it (although I am sure they do).

But anyhoo, that is a terrible question to ask Brian Williams.

He will be saved.

Hillary would be facing the same danger. It is scary, but President Bush is probably the most hated person on the planet and they've been able to protect him (although living in a bubble isn't Obama's style.) We can't let crazy weirdos scare us into only electing white southern men. It's just another reason I admire Barack and Michelle.

If history has shown us anything, it's that seeing that lone face may let you know it's coming, but not from which direction. The lone gunman has almost always been a myth.

let's hope Oprah has put her money to good use and assembled the best damn security team out there.
I'm not so sure I'd leave it in the hands of the Secret Service.

Those of you who think that we southerners are busy diddling our cousins and whipping slaves are wrong. African-Americans have come a long way since Jim Crow and it's getting better. It will get even better when we regain control from the Republicans, which can't come too soon.

The color of his skin and the simmering racism in America is just the most obvious threat for Obama - but it is certainly not the only or perhaps even the most dangerous.
The picture above and hundreds like it illustrate the most dangerous thing about Obama. He has power. Bringing out crowds like he does - not to mention donors and voters - is an example of a real and significant power. The power of a leader who inspires.
Power like that always makes some people nervous. It means he is less controlable, less buyable. He may very well win the White House with far more than 50%+1 as we have seen the past 2 decades. That will mean he is less beholden to others to keep power for him. And that makes him threatening to many people.

Do none of you live in the South or have none of you ever lived there? Clearly, you don't know the level of hatred Southern whites have against Obama simply because he's Black. My family can't even conceive of this man being in the WH. He's black. They are all from the South. In their minds, he is the man they are GENERATIONALLY conditioned to despise.

Thus, the question was perfectly justifiable.

What is America's history regarding Blacks.

What happened in the 60s with respect to Black vs. White violence.

When midwestern Obama visits Southern states who do you think is going to be there, aiming weapons at him, if only in their minds.

Obama has a security detail surrounding him because VERY EARLY on he received death threats. This is a HUGE deal. We have our Bhutto campaigning right now. Let's hope that Fate will preserve him for the WH, unlike what happened to her.

If not, we get more of the same. And America can't withstand much more of what we have right now.

If I believed in a god I would implore It to preserve Obama. Because he's going to be our next President.

Too many are reading too much into this.
My take is that Brian Williams is just lazy. This is a throwaway question. Any candidate running for president has to have considered the possibility, especially after Bhutto as the most recent example.
Was it intended as an ambush? I think not, more likely an unthinking automatic; like we know that Russert always asks Senator/Governor X two years before an election, "Will you, run for President (re-election) in (whatever date)?"
These guys are old, contrived, unoriginal.
So much easier than working.

Are you freaking kidding me with this? These are the questions that he gets???? COME ON!!! Even the most unbiased observer can see that the questions that Hillary gets are completely different than the ones that Obama gets.

I"m surprised Brian Williams didn"t follow-up with, "How do you manage to be so wonderful?"

if you have feelings of concern for the safety of obama (or any other candidate) there is something you can do

take a moment to visualise an invisible wall of protection and goodwill surrounding him (or her) with every step they take and every breath they breathe

anybody can do this regardless of religious beliefs or the lack thereof - thoughts are things we create that have a life after their creation

i know, i know ... tin hat, take my meds, blah blah blah ...

Look at how the press if playing the fear card, literally every which way you turn. What a tool Brian Williams is, I have no more respect for him than I do Faux News. He shouldn't be allowed to call himself a "journalist". More like tabloidist, definitely a shill. No wonder these nightly news programs have a consistent trend of loosing viewers, it's not because of the Internet like they are always whining, it's because these guys are worthless corporate mouthpieces for the status-quo, Brian Williams sold his soul to the devil (Cheney) a long time ago. These "news" guys have no backbone and don't serve the interest of the public AT ALL. I hope it all backfires on them in a big way. I hope the trend in declining viewer ship continues until there's nothing left to loose.
