Wall Street skidded lower in another erratic session Tuesday as investors worried that the tumbling economy may not only cripple mortgage lenders like Countrywide Financial Corp., but also create problems for other companies like AT&T Corp. The Dow Jones industrials fell more than 200 points.

Investors tried to take the market higher at many points during the day, but eventually succumbed to another stream of bad news. All three indexes are down substantially so far this year, having been pummeled since Jan. 1 on worse-than-anticipated readings on the economy.

That could mean that fourth-quarter earnings reports, which start pouring in later this week, may not meet already lowered expectations.

great, here comes another rate increase. They just raised rates back in july of 07, and at least once again since then. Im sure this will be a great reason to raise them again. And if you live in an area where you have no other option for phone except maybe cable , your stuck with ATT. You cant even get vonage because you need internet connection, and you cant have that without a phone line {unless you want to really get raped and go with cable} So you really have no choice but ATT and they know it. The Monopoly once again, and this time no one will stop them.

Figures, Clinton left the economy in such a bad state that George Bush still hasn't pulled it back up. And now that the democrats look like they have a chance at winning the presidency the market is pre-emptively reflecting the poor economy that will return.;)

I get the uneasy feeling these guys trying to salvage our economy are huddled in a bunker.

With hostile forces advancing on the city at rapid speed to collect on debts.

Maybe they can negotiate a surrender deal?

A few more days like this and the Dow will be back around the point where Bushy took it over.

The reason the market is falling is lack of buyers. It seems the populace is way ahead of the Wall Street Wisdom. Many held on until Jan 1 just to postpone their taxes after the Santa Claus rally.

At this point what could give the market a reason to rally ? Sure doesn't seem like many of those Wall Street bonuses are going into the market. I see more of the same decline ahead with some buying on oversold positions.

At this point the Hedge Funds and trading desks are competitng against each other for ever smaller crumbs.
