In 1972, Republican voters in Michigan decided to make a little mischief, crossing over to vote in the open Democratic primary and voting for segregationist Democrat George Wallace, seriously embarrassing the state's Democrats. In fact, a third of the voters (PDF) in the Democratic primary were Republican crossover votes. In 1988, Republican voters again crossed over, helping Jesse Jackson win the Democratic primary, helping rack up big margins for Jackson in Republican precincts. (Michigan Republicans can clearly be counted on to practice the worst of racial politics.) In 1998, Republicans helped Jack Kevorkian's lawyer -- quack Geoffrey Feiger -- win his Democratic primary, thus guaranteeing their hold on the governor's mansion that year.

With a history of meddling in our primaries, why don't we try and return the favor. Next Tuesday, January 15th, Michigan will hold its primary. Michigan Democrats should vote for Mitt Romney, because if Mitt wins, Democrats win. How so?

Crossover sabotage only works if you think your party's nomination is in the bag.

This year is the first time in 80 years that there is no incumbent -- either prez or vice prez in the race. So, gimmicks like this could bite you in the ass.

Irresponsible. Wacko. Megalomaniacal. Meddling idjuts! Thinking you're "smart" is so bloody deadly. A little "power" and KABOOM, somebody who thinks they are smart and is itching to weild the wand of all that power leads a whole tribe off a cliff. DAMMIT. This is frickin insane. I need a good joke after this...

Any chance this is how Obama lost NH? Republicans voting for Hillary to goof up the race and give them the candidate they believe they can win?

Yeah, I don't get this.

First off, I would feel like I betrayed my country voting for this Douchebag, knowing how bad he'd be for the country. What if, God forbid, he actually won the generals? I think I would have to kill myself.

Second, If you are actually going to do this (and sleep at night), why not vote for Huckabee, the one candidate who will ensure a Democrat in the WH?

Why would you lift the campaign of the best funded candidate on any side? How much is Mitt paying Kos. This is a dumb idea.

Michigan is an open primary and voters there need only ask if they want a Democratic ballot (only Clinton is on the ballot because the Democratic Party does not recognize the results as valid) or a Republican one. I wholeheartedly disagree with the Daily Kos on this. It is irrational to argue that we are better served by voting for Romney in order to break the Republican party further. The GOP is capable of inflicting its own damage on its own. Rational Democrats should vote for McCain or Huckabee or even Paul.

I am not a Huckabee supporter but I am more than willing to offer him this advice. Huckabee should do two things:

1) he should go to Flint Michigan and deliver his populist message. He should rail against free trade and he will find ample support.

2) he should go to Detroit's Chaldean community and tell him that he as a Christian will protect Iraq's Christian community. Michigan has the nation's largest Arab community and they are largely Iraqi Christians.

McCain will likely win Michigan but Romney and Huckabee are running neck and neck. If Huckabee can do these two things he will find ample support. Perhaps not enough to overcome McCain but enough to give Romney his coveted bronze.

Funny stuff but it ain't gonna happen. The Dems are in a tight race of their own and no one is going to abandon their candidate to do a cross-over vote.

This stuff is not that unusual in states with open primaries, though. McCain even campaigned to Michigan Dems in 2000 to try to get cross voters.

More recently, one of the theories for Hillary's win in NH is that since Obama had it all locked up (due to the polls) a number of Obama independents used their vote for McCain.

Outstanding.

Refreshingly strategic.
