Stewart vs. Matthews Round 2: Jon Calls Chris Insane

Last fall Chris Matthews appeared on the "Daily Show" to promote his book Life's A Campaign. During a painful interview, Stewart called the book "a recipe for sadness" and wildly disagreed with its contents for several minutes. Matthews in turn exclaimed, "This is the book interview from hell! This is the worst interview I've ever had in my life!"

Last night on "The Daily Show" a writerless Stewart played a clip of MSNBC's Matthews and sidekick Keith Olbermann making Lawrence of Arabia metaphors to describe Hillary Clinton the night of the New Hampshire primary. He then mocked it with a metaphor of his own. If you can't watch the clip, know that it ends with Stewart saying of Matthews, "That guy is insane."

After a clip from MSNBC's New Hampshire coverage, during which Chris Matthews gives a lengthy analogy about Hillary Clinton and Lawrence of Arabia, Jon Stewart called Chris Matthew "insane". I think it was a funny piece on a show that makes fun of people. Matthews has I think been off lately, I mean genuinely off, like not well. Sometimes he can be fun to watch. This is an example of where he really lost his thread and kept trying to catch it I think, instead of folding his tent. (get it? it was a subtle.)

The serious thing here, and there often are serious sub-texts as we all know to Jon Stewart's show, is that most of the media were doing something like this during the run up to the primary. They were all over the top on one candidate's ascendency and on one's supposed demise. And, they totally ignored another unless there were a gotcha moment to be had. By their choices and comments so rises and falls the fates of candidates (and our country I would add!)

As Tom Brokaw observed, that's not their job -- to push voters one way or the other with breathless commentary and over the top predictions. That was the meta meaning if I have my meta's right, not really about Chris Matthews as an individual commentator so much as the whole darn thing going on on cable in particular. Which is a core theme after all of Jon Stewart's show.

I saw the clip on first broadcast EDT and I thought to myself, this guy Matthews is insane.
Three seconds latter, Stewart said the same.

he has one thing common with Arrianna - hatred for the Clintons. I dont care much for the Clintons but I think Chris and Arriana openly show their hatred. But there are people who remember Bill doing a great job with the Economy and are attracted to them. I would vote for her but her stand for Iraq. That will keep me from voting for her. Obama is fresh, untested but we have to take our chances. We did with Bill and the Republicans did with Bush. Bill delivered and Bush screwed up.

I have problems watching Hardball with Chris Matthews. Perhaps it's my ADD, perhaps I just don't care for his "roundtable" where there are 4 people trying to all talk at the same time. Didn't he used to appear on the McLaughlin Group occasionally?

I've always preferred the Daryl Hammond version of Mathews on SNL.

Stewart is right. Matthews is insane, ... not of sound mind. He is always using movies as his source of information or Churchillian stories, etc. He is just unintelligent, and undereducated and over-ranked, over-compensated, etc.. Shouldn't be on TV. I quit watching cable news largely because of Matthews and of course Fox. I have no respect at all for Chris Matthews.....obviously.

There is nothing funnier then seeing Jon Stewart humilliate Chris Matthews. He did it last year to that smug, fat, loser....and he just did it again last night. Poor, Chris, he just can't catch a break:)

Personally I like Chris Mathews. He has a right to his opinion just as everyone else. If you notice many politicians don't answer direct questions. By his pushing for details Chris gets them to answer the questions the American people want to know the answers to. I appreciate the fact that he has people of all perspectives and spectrums of politics discussing their views. So what if he voted for Bush? That's his right under the constitution. However much you agree or disagree with his point of view, hardball is the best place we have to get real discussions so be can do our best, as viewers to make the most informed opinion as possible.
Why is there so much hate towards those that disagree with you? Be real careful before closing your minds completely, you may start sounding like a Republican.

This is all very interesting to me. I watch both Hardball and Countdown w/ KO on a regular basis. I happened to tune into MSNBC on Tuesday (for the majority of the evening) and the running joke with all their guests that evening was how many analogies Chris and Keith would use to describe what was going on. I like Jon Stewart, but if he watched the entire night he would have seen Chris, Keith and their guests using all types of weird analogies to explain what the hell happened that night. If you are not a Hardball viewer, this would NOT be the first time that Chris has made reference to Lawrence of Arabia. If you hate him that much, don't watch the show. And if you don't watch the show, criticize with the full story, not with the comments of a man who is less funny without his writers. Colbert is far more appealing without writers than Jon is.

The look on Keith's face is hilarious, he can barely keep it together. Chris Mathews is insane. John needs to put together a reel of Chris's on air man-gasms. He is now fantasizing about Obama dressed up in desert garb, riding on a wild stallion, with a big sword...eeeehhh. I think Keith just keeps his distance.

Good. Someone has to stand up to Chris Matthews. Keith Olbermann won't do it. In fact, he's falling in line with him.
