Fred D. Thompson tried to salvage his faltering presidential campaign at a debate Thursday night with a barrage of sharp attacks on the "liberal" policies of Mike Huckabee, the fellow Southerner whom he clearly sees as a rival in the South Carolina primary.

The performance by Mr. Thompson, which including several pointed one-liners, capped a debate that showed the altered terrain of the Republican field as it moved beyond contests in Iowa and New Hampshire.

Mitt Romney took on Senator John McCain, the victor in New Hampshire, over economic issues in an effort to sway voters in Michigan before its primary on Tuesday. Mr. Huckabee and Mr. Thompson tussled over South Carolina voters. And Rudolph W. Giuliani took a muted swipe at Mr. McCain in an effort to win over security-minded voters before the Jan. 29 Florida primary.

But it was Mr. Thompson's performance, in which he shook off the laid-back style that has defined his candidacy, that provided some of the liveliest moments of the debate in Myrtle Beach, S.C..

"Austin NAACP President Nelson Linder, who has known Ron Paul for 20 years, unequivocally dismissed charges that the Congressman was a racist in light of recent smear attempts, and said the reason for him being attacked was that he was a threat to the establishment."

Ron Paul from the debate:

"¦why should we not be talking about foreign policy that used to be part of the Republican party? Mr. Republican Robert Taft didn"t even want us to be in NATO, and you"re saying now that we should continue to borrow money from China to finance this empire that we can't afford?!

Let me see if I get this right¦.

We borrow 10 billion dollars from China and then we give it to [Gen. Pervez] Musharraf, who is a military dictator, who overthrew an elected government, and then we go to war? We loose all the lives promoting democracy IN IRAQ?!

I mean, what"s going on here?

And you"re saying that this isn"t appealing to Republicans? Where did this come about? I think this is a Republican message, I defend the platform. We used to say "get rid of the department of education". It does not say that now. Now Republicans double the size of the department of education, so, WHERE HAVE WE GONE?!

I think we have lost our way. And you make the insinuation that I am less Republican?"

Paul Warns Against Rush To War With Iran, All Other GOP Candidates "Ready To Attack"

Last night, Fox News anchor Brit Hume kicked off the network's South Carolina GOP debate by asking the candidates if "the American commander in the Strait of Hormuz the other day [made] the right decision by responding passively when approached aggressively by Iranian fast boats believed to be from the Revolutionary Guards."

Why is it that the few candidates actually willing to debate substance get no press? (that's rhetorical)

Ron Paul is full of faults as a president, no question, but at the very least he is willing, able, and eager to actually debate. You never hear him trying to get in a zinger and then smirking (as McCain did in that debate). He is consistently polite. And he tries to stay on topic.

We don't need Ron Paul as president, but we sure as hell need candidates who behave on the campaign trail like he does.

A whole article about the debate and not one mention of Ron Paul. Yet another example of the media deciding who we are allowed to see and hear. While I'm not a Repub and would not vote for Paul, it was clear to me that out of all of them, he was the only one willing to say "The emperor is buck naked folks." It's no wonder he has so many followers. Keep on keepin' them honest, sir.

I only saw a little of the debate because it seemed they were repeating stuff they had said previously and I turned it off.

The national stage is proving a bit large for Huckleberry.

Thompson comes alive because he feels comfortable in the South. That is not a good sign. He is the rear guard that would be running for a Bush third term on the southern strategy platform. that'll come up short in November 2008.

Romney has no political touch. Otherwise, Romney could probably succeed at anything he puts his mind to. I wonder if he would not have been better off running honestly as a Schwarzenegger surrogate.

Hard to see how McCain wins on a war platform when 2 out of 3 Americans are unhappy with our presence in Iraq. Most likely he is counting on a mud fight with hippie Hilary to get the moral majority hackles up. With all other candidates having problems, McCain's easy, breezy been-here-done-this-and-love-it
attitude may snag him the nomination before setting out on his final bombing mission.

Giuliani looks weird up there. Conservatives are probably wondering what they need him for.

Once again Ron Paul wins the debate and the poll, but once again FOX tries their best to cover it up. I find this whole dynamic fascinating even though Ron Paul isn't my first choice

What an enertaining debate! The Fox Focus Group seemed by a majority to like Fred Thompson. In my opinion, Fred coulbn't win an election for Federal Dogcatcher. However, perhaps he has a future in SC politics. McCain came out relatively well in spite of his 100 Year War and being an old neo-con, and so did Huck in spite of his shortcomings in nearly all areas. Mitt looked like a real smug jerk who would smirk once in a while. Rudy as us was Mr. Mayor, egomaniac, 9/11,Israel's friend, etc.

Ron Paul as usual was the only truthful one in the pack, telling people what they don't want to hear. In many respects, he's right on target with the war, economy (including the recession), foreign relations, etc. He suffers alot of derision from his fellow candidates and FOX.

Again Ron Paul made the rest of them look like idiots, but then again that was easy, they are!!!. Bret Hume tried to call Ron Paul on the carpet for this response about the Iran gun boats, what a jerk. When they allowed a side by side shot of Mitt smirking when Ron Paul was talking, I thought that was just Fox Noise letting the rest mock Mr Paul, bad show. Just goes to show that Mr Ron Paul has class, the rest do not.

Ron Paul was the only one who spoke the truth last night. The others only pushed for the same old tired ideas and policies that make me physically ill to listen too. Of course Mr. Paul hasn't got a chance in hell of being the president. The GOP wants one of those tired, disgusting creeps and we Dems are going to get stuck with another weak candidate. Its going to be a very close race with a lot of shenanigans in the electronic voting booths. We are all so screwed.

For those who think Ron Paul has anything to offer beyond his anti-war stance, you better read up on him a bit more. You would find the truth about this guy! Peace not at any price-not Ron Paul!

You believed it, didn't you?

I did not watch the debates, but I saw enough exerpts to know what you believed. As we pathetic liberals always believe.

We are America. We are the world's most revolutionary people. There is a precise, textbook definition of revolution. And we revolt, with great regularity.

The American Revolution was a true revolution, throwing off feudalism in favor of capitalism. The Civil War was true revolution, as we continued to throw off feudalism, this time by ending slavery. But ending chattel slavery just resulted in serfdom, a different kind of slavery. In the United States, we called our serfs "sharecroppers." By the end of the 1960s, this form of slavery was effectively dead. Revolution! The labor movements of the late nineteenth century, and the 1930s was true revolution, taking wealth and power from the capitalists, and giving it to the people. The civil rights movement was true revolution, as we threw off the caste system. Freedom for blacks, ethnics, women, gays, and everyone else. Throw off the caste system, revolt! The educational reforms of the last several decades is true revolution, as the people seize power from the capitalists, who believe if you were born poor you should be poor your whole life. Once upon a time, only the rich kids could count on college, now any kid who works and studies can go. Revolution, as we throw off the caste system.

And in listening to the exerpts from the debate, I was struck by how many times one or the other of the Republican candidates mentioned the Reagan Revolution. There never was a Reagan Revolution! Revolution is the transfer of wealth and power from the few to the many.

What Reagan foisted on the United States was counter-revolution, pure and simple. Counter-revolution, the transferral of wealth and power from the many to the few. The rich get richer, and the rest of us suffer!
