As the political world holds its breath to see if Michael Bloomberg will make a long-rumored run for the White House, those familiar with the mayor's thinking and those charting a possible bid say a decision could be as much as two months away.

On Friday, the New York Times higlighted that New Yorkers, many media outlets, and even members of Bloomberg's administration have grown impatient with the mayor's prolonged flirtation with the 2008 race.

"Bloomberg's dalliance with the idea of running for president has stretched on and on, with his enthusiastic approval despite the public denials," the Times reported. "But even before actually entering the contest, Mr. Bloomberg may have already risked losing something: people's patience."

And yet, all signs suggest that voter tolerance for Bloomberg's indecisiveness will likely be tested even further. According to those with direct knowledge of the mayor's decision making, it is highly unlikely that he will launch a presidential bid without first seeing which candidates emerge from the Republican and Democratic primaries. The more "divisive" the field -- see: Sen. Hillary Clinton and former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee -- the more likely it is Bloomberg offers up his name. Those close to the mayor say such a scenario comes up frequently in conversation.

"I think that [impatience] is a view that a few people hold, but not many," said Doug Bailey, a longtime Republican consultant and former head of the centrist organization Unity08. "There may be some frustration in the parts of the media, but I don't sense it on the part of the public... [Bloomberg] should make a decision in mid-February based upon having seen the results from February 5th [the super-primary] and some assessment as to the nominees of each party."

But, as Bailey notes, Bloomberg may not have time to waste in order to build an effective infrastructure should he choose to run for the White House. Fundraising is not a problem for the billionaire mayor. But getting on state ballots, researching voter issues, and organizing campaign advisers, operatives, and a running mate all pose formidable tasks. Bloomberg is reportedly investing money into conducting national polls, and the Huffington Post previously reported that the mayor has conducted foreign policy tutorial sessions with former Clinton administration official Nancy Soderberg.

"As a practical matter the Mayor ought to make a decision based upon as much knowledge as he can collect," said Bailey.

Added Carey Campbell, national chairman of the Draft Michael Bloomberg Committee: "It's at least two month before it's appropriate for him to make a commitment. We have to produce the grassroots effort that would convince him he is needed on the ballot."

On Friday night, Bailey and fellow Unity08 founder Gerald Rafshoon, a former official in the Carter administration, left the organization to start their own 50-state signature-gathering operation on behalf Bloomberg. According to Elizabeth Benjamin of the New York Daily News, the move was approved by the mayor's staff.

Campbell said that he hoped to combine forces with the Bailey and Rafshoon to launch the ballot drives and political organizing needed to convince Bloomberg to run. That process, he said, will take some time.

"It's our job to leave Mr. Bloomberg's jobs open," said Campbell. "It isn't time for Mr. Bloomberg to commit yet. There is a whole lot of work that remains to be done before that. Those of us who want him to run have to continue the network we are trying to build. We need to go out there and get the signatures to put him on the ballot."

I am surprised about the hostility. I am a guaranteed GOP vote unless it is Huckabee, in which case there is no chance in hell I vote GOP. Personally, I would embrace a Bloomberg candidacy because I will trade free market concerns for social ones if they come via Huck. Hopefully, however, this scenario never occurs.

WTF-so what? Mike must be trying to run for POTUS on the cheap & after all but 2 candidates from each party have dropped out. Who cares? Mike's much delayed candidacy will evoke yawns, & not get votes.

If elected, Bloomberg promises to direct the CDC to investigate "Little Man Syndrome".

b) Our streets are caving in all over.
c) Corruption is out of control. The development of lower NYC, under Bloomys watch, has resulted in rampant contractor fraud, shell corps set up collecting funds but cutting corners/not doing the work of safe rebuilding, and this has resulted in the death of 2 beloved firefighters. Companies have collected on the 9/11 funds & tax incentives, but skipped town quietly, resulting in taking the $ & jobs with them. Bloomy still runs his mega-corp & news biz, albeit quietly & through cronies. He has made deals with every corporate player in NY. If he makes President, he's going to owe ALOT of people. Expect more rampant corporatism/tax cuts & favors.

3.He speaks of greener tech & making changes to protect the environment but he takes his helicopter to sports games. He is trying to institute a massive toll to cut down on traffic congestion in NYC. You guessed it, the poor & middle class commuters can no longer drive in NYC. You'll be seeing alot more Benzes & limos in NY. Just like Bloomy wants it. The poor & now the middle class in the dilapidated subways.

4. He's mayor for $1 a year. The oldest neo-con trick in the book. See Blackwater for examples of privatization of government functions & what it results in.

5.Immigration. Bloomberg supports immigration as long as it keeps wages down & undermines unions. He had a hand in defeating bills that provided them with medical care, rental subsidies, and basic services. He didn't get to be a billionaire by being generous, SOMEONE has to do the slave work.

He's a sham

His Pros:
1. He instituted the 311 city info & services system. Works well. Now I know who to call when the sinkholes swallow yet another car.

His Cons
1.He loves the Patriot Act. He's in bed with the telcos in NY.
2.He thinks Iraq should have no time line for withdrawal.
3.Under his watch, corporate accountability has been demolished. ie:
a) Our electrical services are in such a state of decay many people have been zapped just walking down the street, some fatally, and blackouts/surges are common. There have been explosions in NYC from poor oversight of our major electrical corp Con Ed. He says they're doing a "great job." The CEO of Con Ed earns 12.7 million a year. We're getting another rate increase.

Talk about a fairytale candidacy.

Bloomberg is a sham - Every neo-con in the US will be voting for him and trying to take unsuspecting Democrats & Independents with them. He's Bush if Bush had a brain and a billion dollars.

He's demolished the middle class in NY and still is. As a long-suffering NYC resident under the Bloomberg admin, this guy turned NYC into a nightmare for working families. Middle class flight turned into a mass exodus thanks to his admin and it's getting worse.

in other words, if hil gets the nomination, he goes for it...she is centrist and any republican has the right...so he figures he gets the moderate to liberal vote so long as barack is not the nominee...

He's obviously no one's favorite and is just waiting to play the spoiler role. I know the right has no leaders, thus the opportunity for blooper, but he's not showing much leadership either by waiting to for someone else to test the waters first. Chalk him up as another conservative 'loser'.

Bloomberg hasn't done 1 thing since coming to office. People talk about him cleaning NEW YORK up???? ARE YOU KIDDING?? Everyone from NY knows that Rudy Guiliani made New York what it is today. I used to not even go out at night because of all the crime. Rudy cleaned it up. I despise him but NYC owes him alot. Bloomberg is a joke. Plain and simple.

Doug Bailey, a longtime Republican consultant and former head of the centrist organization Unity08

These guys are Centrists like Lieberman, pro wars of agression, torture, and domestic spying. Bloomberg and Lieberman would be Centrists in the old USSR.
