The Weinstein Company, one of Hollywood's biggest independent film companies, has completed a separate agreement with striking writers, according to Harvey Weinstein, the company's co-founder.

Mr. Weinstein said Thursday that his New York-based company had come to terms with the writers guilds on a deal similar to the one reached last week by United Artists, the first independent movie company to reach an interim contract with the writers, who have been on strike since Nov. 5.

I suggest that George Clooney pay attention to these exemptions before he talks about mediating in the WGA strike. Better yet, why not get ready for the SAG strike that's probably going to happen soon?

Oh I see what they're doing now. Pretty clever.

You realize all these independent deals is going to mean the end of the union eventually. The same thing happened here in New York with the musicians local 802. One of the results of the last "negotiation" ended in only about 10 percent of the establishments that host live music even recognize the existence of a union. The rest would laugh at the idea of paying scale. Many would laugh at the idea of paying anything at all.

Now if the big production houses start offering better deals than the union is going after, soon membership will be pointless for those that can find the work. The rest will just have to take what they can get.
