Daniel Daylewis

The Observer:

Daniel Day-Lewis is brewing up in the homely basement kitchen of his country house in rural Ireland. 'Actors,' he muses as he pours the boiling water on to the tea bag in the mug, 'should never give interviews. Once you know what colour socks they wear, you'll remember it next time you see them performing, and it will get in the way. It is not in anyone's interest.'

As the preamble to an interview it is not promising, but Day-Lewis has been in the film business for more than 20 years since he first made headlines as the gay hoodlum in My Beautiful Laundrette in 1985, and so knows that, as part of what he labels 'the fatuous science of marketing', talking about himself goes with the territory.

I want to thank Daniel Day-Lewis for sharing his gift with us. When he is in a film I can trust it to be good and I've never been disapointed in what he does.

Total non-sequitir, but it does seem like the Irish have produced an awful lot of very good actors, musicians, and authors, for such a small country. Maybe there is something in the soil.

He is really amazing and recalls the craft aspect of acting not just the banal celebrity-dom we are inundated with.

In my opinion, Daniel Day-Lewis is the single most remarkable actor alive. His performances are nothing short of transformative. That he should also be so humble mannered is near-cause for sainthood.

That said, seeing DDL on the same story elevation as Britney Spears, well, that just about summates diametric opposition on every level. They couldn't have less in common if she were a frog.
