Johnson

Robert L. Johnson, the billionaire founder of Black Entertainment Television, injected himself into the middle of a flaring campaign controversy on Sunday. During an appearance with Sen. Hillary Clinton, he seemingly raised the specter of Sen. Barack Obama's youthful drug use.

Speaking to a crowd in Columbia, South Carolina, the African-American business tycoon chastised Obama for a memo his campaign put together documenting instances in which Clinton or her surrogates made allegedly racially-insensitive statements.

"I am frankly insulted," Johnson declared, "that the Obama campaign would imply that we are so stupid that we would think Hillary and Bill Clinton, who have been deeply and emotionally involved in black issues since Barack Obama was doing something in the neighborhood - and I won't say what he was doing, but he said it in the book - when they have been involved."

The comment was greeted with ire by the Obama campaign. In the past, Clinton surrogates have raised the drug issue. Hours later, Johnson claimed he was simply referring to Obama's work as a community organizer.

The episode illustrated just how charged the Democratic primary has grown in the wake of Obama's victory in the Iowa caucuses and Clinton's win in the subsequent New Hampshire primary. It also threatens to bring wider scrutiny to Johnson's political activism, which is highly controversial in Democratic circles.

To be sure, Johnson is a major figure within the black community, a key voting bloc in the upcoming South Carolina primary. He also has been a big-time contributor to Democratic causes and candidates. According to the Center for Responsive Politics, he's offered up more than $1.5 million in donations since 1992; with $4,600 going to Clinton on March 6, 2007 and $2,100 to Obama on May 31, 2006.

But, over the past few years, Johnson has waged political battles that put him drastically at odds with Clinton, the candidate he now supports.

Johnson served on President George Bush's commission on privatizing social security. In January 2005, he convened a summit whose stated purpose was to raise and answer questions about the African American community's political affiliations, but whose true design, critics claim, was to peal black voters away from the Democratic Party.

He has repeatedly called for the repeal of the estate tax, saying that the policy is propagated by "a liberal, noblesse oblige attitude that they have probably had in their families for generations."

He even called Republican Alabama Senator Jeff Sessions to express his concerns on the issue.

There are certainly issues that bind Johnson and Clinton. One of those is Johnson's service as a member of Bill Clinton's Global Initiative in 2006.

In addition, Johnson's Liberia Enterprise Development Fund has worked with CGI to promote business ventures and entrepreneurship in the West Africa country.

There are political and policy agreements as well. And in the wake of his controversial comments, Johnson was forced to reiterate those.

"My comments today were referring to Barack Obama's time spent as a community organizer, and nothing else. Any other suggestion is simply irresponsible and incorrect," said Johnson in an email statement. "When Hillary Clinton was in her twenties she worked to provide protections for abused and battered children and helped ensure that children with disabilities could attend public school. That results oriented leadership -- even as a young person -- is the reason I am supporting Hillary Clinton."

In a statement about Johnson, Obama spokesman Bill Burton said, "His tortured explanation doesn't hold up against his original statement. And it's troubling that neither the campaign nor Senator Clinton -- who was there as the remark was made - is willing to condemn it as they did when another prominent supporter recently said a similar thing."

When our country needs change as much as it does, I welcomed the idea of Obama. But after seeing the mud the Clintons started to sling and getting bombarded by the Obamam bashing e-mails, I'm beginning to realize how racist this country still is. Being a white male and believing we had come far enough to look at a person based on their beliefs and convictions rather than the color of their skin, disappoints me. As soon as the Clintons started loosing in the polls, they immediately went for the throat. They give us an idea of what we will be getting once Clinton is elected. Allot of the same old bull. I find it hard to believe we could ever vote for a smart, well thought person. We always seem to go with the person that does the slinging rather than the person that wants to run a clean campaign.

The Democrats are the party of the rich, race doesn't matter only money.

The Obama camp is really getting desperate. Playing the race card against the Clintons. He may win South Carolina with these vile tactics but it will definetely hurt him in the long run as the dust settles and people have time to reflect on all that the Clintons have done for minorities in their many years fo public service.

I am extremely sad to see the prominent divide that we are promoting in the democratic party. I think the Clintons should be careful who they choose to drive home their message. Bob Johnson is no paragon of virtues, as the head of BET, I am truly insulted as a young black woman to see the garbage that BET promotes as Black Entertainment. He seem to have some vested interest in the Clinton prospective presidental run as a business man. He is even further promoting the division of blacks in this country. For that he looks stupid and I am insulted. A little bit of hope and change could help Bob Johnson.

Besides if she gets behind again, she can always pull out the "poor little" hilly routine and shed some more alligator tears. The MSM is so stupid that they ate it up the first time, why not try it again.

I feel sorry for the Clintons. This blantant race baiting by the Clintons themselves as well as their campaign, advisors, and supporters---such as the infamous media whore Bob Johnson---is beyond offensive and pathetic. I hope that the black community brings about a reckoning if she is successful in her electronic vote tampering and injection of racial division to steal the democratic nomination. I say it here and I will say it everywhere there is a black pair of ears to hear me. If she gets the nomination in such an unscrupulous and Bushian manner, blacks should vote with all the might and power of their constituency for either Huckabee or Bloomberg. If they can't hold their noses long enough to vote republican, then stay at home on election day in November and don't vote for Hillary at all. MLK and supporters eventually took a stand and stopped riding the bus when forced to sit in the back and black people should not stay on the racist, electronic vote tampering Hillary train in the general election. The Clintons are expecting that no matter what racist, divisive tactics they use against Obama, blacks will have no other choice but to vote democrat; however, there is another choice and it is to not vote for Hillary or at all in a general election. Now is the current generation's time to make a stand against this kind of racism and oppression that the Clintons are harkening us back to. Make a stand against supporting her ilk in November if she steals her way to the nomination with the most deplorable racial tactics.

The HRC campaign knows only another black person from the "outside" can get away with this since she has already vowed to fire anyone in her campaign who brings the drug use issue up again. But why not then talk about Whitewater? Monica? If she can't control her own husband how the hell is she going to run the country. Besides she wants to take credit for the "good things" that happened during the Clinton presidency, why not also take credit for the bad?

Hillary Clinton yesterday: "You know, I think that we don't want anyone, any of our supporters, anyone--and that's why in my campaign, any time anybody has said anything that I thought was out of bounds, they're gone, you know? I have gotten rid of them, I have said that is not appropriate in this campaign."

Her campaign today about Johnson's claim that he had been referring to Obama's community organization: "that's what he (Bob Johnson) said and we accept it."

Just think if Obama had been doing that in a video, as a youth, it would be in a BET video. This ahole is a hypocrite.

Johnson and his media empire have done nothing for society and in particular for the African American Community. He is part of the vulgar entertainment industry.

HOWEVER; this entire "controversy" is a created diversion and non-issue designed to keep the masses from thinking about real issues of importance and consequence.

Don't fall for it.

That embarrassment Bob Johnson doesn't speak for or represent me as an American Black man.I'm personally ashamed that we share the same skin color. How dare he make any attempt to refer to Senator Obama "teen drug use" when Bob Johnson is founder of BET, one of the most destructive forms of media introduced into the Black community. It's sad to admit but the Willie Lynch prophecy still remains true among some Blacks, Bob Johnson (Billionaire) is one of those Blacks. Will Senator Clinton ask Bob Johnson to disassociate himself from her campaign as she said she would do to anyone who mentioned that subject.

I think that what we have to understand, certainly anyone running for President has to understand, is that Trash Talk is the means of participation by those of us who chose not to run for office. Politics and football would be pretty boring without a little trash on the side.

So now mentioning the stuff in Obama's own memoir is off-limits? Is he now denying his admitted drug use? If he thinks Johnson's remarks were rough -- they weren't -- just wait till the repugs get ahold of Mr. Kumbaya's drug reminiscences. Hell, they'll probably scour the back alleys for dealers who'll say they sold Obama crack, or addicts he supposedly used with. If the 'pugs could turn a war hero into a pariah, they can sure as hell turn a confessed drug user into a strung-out crackhead.

HOLD UP! This is the SAME man that introduced African Americans as gun toting thugs with half dressed women shaking their asses around a luxury car to America! Does he REALLY have the right to throw that spade card considering that he didn't portray African Americans in the best and positive light?

BET was and still is a substandard cable network at best. One of the most commonly-heard complaints is the fact that BET's programming is mostly geared towards ad sponsorship and does not focus on the public affairs of the black community. Therefore, I ask you…what is so great about the greatness of Robert Johnson? Nothing….Robert Johnson if anything used the black community to garner his wealth without any regard to the plight of African Americans…instead he harnessed that negative image and expounded upon it – thus helping to further the stereotypical generalizations America sees in the Black community!

So…As an African American I am insulted that the Clinton campaign and Robert Johnson would imply that WE are so stupid that we would think that they were only speaking of Obama’s community service from years past. GIVE ME A FREAKING BREAK! Just like Robert Johnson felt we were stupid enough to accept those disgusting images of African Americans, he thinks we are stupid enough to fall for this crap! He’s got another thing coming…believe that.

I haven't read all the posts, since they devolved into exaggerations and insults. What I wish to point out is that voters may not hold it against Obama that he has smoked pot, or that he snorted some cocaine powder many years ago. Obama will know from experience that that the marijuana laws are counter-productive. Cocaine is not cool, but Obama did not become addicted and did not damage himself. He is clearly a brilliant man. Aside from the more urgent issues facing this nation (our very survival as a constitutional democracy) I would love to see marijuana legalized for adults, and for us to evaluate the harm done to our people and South America by our cocaine laws.
