I Like ItI Don’t Like It
Johnson

Robert L. Johnson, the billionaire founder of Black Entertainment Television, injected himself into the middle of a flaring campaign controversy on Sunday. During an appearance with Sen. Hillary Clinton, he seemingly raised the specter of Sen. Barack Obama's youthful drug use.

Speaking to a crowd in Columbia, South Carolina, the African-American business tycoon chastised Obama for a memo his campaign put together documenting instances in which Clinton or her surrogates made allegedly racially-insensitive statements.

"I am frankly insulted," Johnson declared, "that the Obama campaign would imply that we are so stupid that we would think Hillary and Bill Clinton, who have been deeply and emotionally involved in black issues since Barack Obama was doing something in the neighborhood - and I won't say what he was doing, but he said it in the book - when they have been involved."

The comment was greeted with ire by the Obama campaign. In the past, Clinton surrogates have raised the drug issue. Hours later, Johnson claimed he was simply referring to Obama's work as a community organizer.

The episode illustrated just how charged the Democratic primary has grown in the wake of Obama's victory in the Iowa caucuses and Clinton's win in the subsequent New Hampshire primary. It also threatens to bring wider scrutiny to Johnson's political activism, which is highly controversial in Democratic circles.

To be sure, Johnson is a major figure within the black community, a key voting bloc in the upcoming South Carolina primary. He also has been a big-time contributor to Democratic causes and candidates. According to the Center for Responsive Politics, he's offered up more than $1.5 million in donations since 1992; with $4,600 going to Clinton on March 6, 2007 and $2,100 to Obama on May 31, 2006.

But, over the past few years, Johnson has waged political battles that put him drastically at odds with Clinton, the candidate he now supports.

Johnson served on President George Bush's commission on privatizing social security. In January 2005, he convened a summit whose stated purpose was to raise and answer questions about the African American community's political affiliations, but whose true design, critics claim, was to peal black voters away from the Democratic Party.

He has repeatedly called for the repeal of the estate tax, saying that the policy is propagated by "a liberal, noblesse oblige attitude that they have probably had in their families for generations."

He even called Republican Alabama Senator Jeff Sessions to express his concerns on the issue.

There are certainly issues that bind Johnson and Clinton. One of those is Johnson's service as a member of Bill Clinton's Global Initiative in 2006.

In addition, Johnson's Liberia Enterprise Development Fund has worked with CGI to promote business ventures and entrepreneurship in the West Africa country.

There are political and policy agreements as well. And in the wake of his controversial comments, Johnson was forced to reiterate those.

"My comments today were referring to Barack Obama's time spent as a community organizer, and nothing else. Any other suggestion is simply irresponsible and incorrect," said Johnson in an email statement. "When Hillary Clinton was in her twenties she worked to provide protections for abused and battered children and helped ensure that children with disabilities could attend public school. That results oriented leadership -- even as a young person -- is the reason I am supporting Hillary Clinton."

In a statement about Johnson, Obama spokesman Bill Burton said, "His tortured explanation doesn't hold up against his original statement. And it's troubling that neither the campaign nor Senator Clinton -- who was there as the remark was made - is willing to condemn it as they did when another prominent supporter recently said a similar thing."

So Racist remarks are permissible if they come from a black man and are targeted at another black man.

Are sexist remarks permissible if we can find a woman who is willing to direct sexist remarks towards another woman?

Isn't Hillary invoking a double standard here? I'll raise the spectre of Obama's race using my black surrogate (Uncle Tom?) BET CEO but raise the spectre of my being a female touting myself as a feminist while trying to get elected by attaching myself to the coattails of my hubby and you're a baddy, a sexist pig, a misogynist. Go ask Erica and Gloria.

Johnson, former BET owner, has made his billions by peddling smut, sex and violence on his tv programs which has had a profoundly negative and damaging effect on our youth both in America and other countries which airs his shows. Obama has been trying to get rappers to put out postivie messages for our children and to denounce the negative and demeaning messages todate. I do not think he will miss Johnson's endorsement and would rather not have it.

Interesting that liberals carped on W's cocaine use constantly, but now that Obama is running, you all make excuses for his drug use.

Obama's campaign is tearing the Democratic Party apart because his followers are so vicious and hypocritical. He's the Spoiler, not Edwards. He should have waited for 2012 to run when he had more experience. The fact that he decided to inject the race card into national politics at a time when the country can't stand another special interest president says a lot about his character.

on the mlk issue, clinton hit it right on the head. it was our fore fathers that set-up this nation for the inequality of people in general [ blacks, Jews, Irish, etc.]. and it was up to the leaders of the country in the 60's to undo it. mlk knew this. you can scream from the top of the mountain all you want, but if the powers that be don't listen, and don't care, its a waste of energy!!! mlk knew this, and started working with the powers. its from this experience that some of the candidates today should learn.

I'm a Clinton supporter, but I like Obama too. If Obama would issue a firm and emphatic statement, "I do not believe Hillary Clinton is a racist," he would be my hero. But he won't, because he's not "above the fray." None of them is and that's just reality.

Obama disclosed drug use.
Just because he disclosed it himself, it appears he thinks that's all fine. Not everyone is sanguine about drug use. It does seem that even though this man didn't specify drug use, the Obamaistas freak out. If Obama's o.k. with his use, and how he walked away from drug use, then it's up to him to quell these inner belly aches from his supporters.
This is cry baby stuff.
If Hillary didn't instigate those comments, it sure isn't HER problem.

Clinton practices the democratic party paternalistic racism that says you poor black slaves must come to the Clinton's for handouts. The Clinton's will give you more handouts than any other Republican or Democrat. Vote for the couple who will grease your palm.

They should have joined with blacks based on agenda and educating the voters. Having trained them to only vote for them because they will give them cash leaves the black vote vulnerable to leaving the Clintons for a black man who just might give them MORE cash....after all, who will be more sympathetic to the plight of all those slave people than a black man? Forget the fact that there are no black slaves in the US and no one here has even met a slave.

Obama comes speaking hope and change and the old line of "Bill Clinton was a black President" doesn't resonate so well in the Black community.

I heard a poll come out today that indicates that the bulk of blacks are now swinging to Obama. They are fleeing Billary.

Maybe Hillary can use her new voice to cry in a black church?

This kind of crap is a big turn off to the American People, we got enough of this crap during the Clinton Administration, the Republican party investigations of the Clintons. A Witch Hunt.

I don't know who's behind it, but the media really needs to shut up, they are all a bunch of right wing idiots, attacking the Democrats, or trying to start shit between the Democrats.

I still don't get the Fairy Tale, Clinton was talking about the Iraq War. Is Hillary beginning a Karl Rove smear campaign or is the Republican Party behind it. Karl Rove Op-ed was so racsist, but the Media doesn't attack him, now do they?????

Maybe this is a sign to vote for Edwards, whom the media gives no air time at all. Not even Huffpost. The U.S. is in a very serious and dangerous time right now and we don't all this gossipy bullshit in an election.

I like Hillary and I really like Obama, but I am sick of the attack modes, spin cycle, media smear campaign, there stupid little sound bites, and manipulation of the facts.

"He has repeatedly called for the repeal of the estate tax, saying that the policy is propagated by "a liberal, noblesse oblige attitude that they have probably had in their families for generations."" - this nut job obviously does not understand the basics of the estate tax.

Trying to portray Hillary Clinton as some kind of racist is as stupid as condemning Obama for a youthful indescretion with drugs. This has really gotten out of hand and it's going to hurt democratic chances of winning the general election.

I am quite sure that it was not Obama who spread any rumors it was the Clintons as evidenced by what happened with Johnson ... which was so so horrible ...
