Johnson

Robert L. Johnson, the billionaire founder of Black Entertainment Television, injected himself into the middle of a flaring campaign controversy on Sunday. During an appearance with Sen. Hillary Clinton, he seemingly raised the specter of Sen. Barack Obama's youthful drug use.

Speaking to a crowd in Columbia, South Carolina, the African-American business tycoon chastised Obama for a memo his campaign put together documenting instances in which Clinton or her surrogates made allegedly racially-insensitive statements.

"I am frankly insulted," Johnson declared, "that the Obama campaign would imply that we are so stupid that we would think Hillary and Bill Clinton, who have been deeply and emotionally involved in black issues since Barack Obama was doing something in the neighborhood - and I won't say what he was doing, but he said it in the book - when they have been involved."

The comment was greeted with ire by the Obama campaign. In the past, Clinton surrogates have raised the drug issue. Hours later, Johnson claimed he was simply referring to Obama's work as a community organizer.

The episode illustrated just how charged the Democratic primary has grown in the wake of Obama's victory in the Iowa caucuses and Clinton's win in the subsequent New Hampshire primary. It also threatens to bring wider scrutiny to Johnson's political activism, which is highly controversial in Democratic circles.

To be sure, Johnson is a major figure within the black community, a key voting bloc in the upcoming South Carolina primary. He also has been a big-time contributor to Democratic causes and candidates. According to the Center for Responsive Politics, he's offered up more than $1.5 million in donations since 1992; with $4,600 going to Clinton on March 6, 2007 and $2,100 to Obama on May 31, 2006.

But, over the past few years, Johnson has waged political battles that put him drastically at odds with Clinton, the candidate he now supports.

Johnson served on President George Bush's commission on privatizing social security. In January 2005, he convened a summit whose stated purpose was to raise and answer questions about the African American community's political affiliations, but whose true design, critics claim, was to peal black voters away from the Democratic Party.

He has repeatedly called for the repeal of the estate tax, saying that the policy is propagated by "a liberal, noblesse oblige attitude that they have probably had in their families for generations."

He even called Republican Alabama Senator Jeff Sessions to express his concerns on the issue.

There are certainly issues that bind Johnson and Clinton. One of those is Johnson's service as a member of Bill Clinton's Global Initiative in 2006.

In addition, Johnson's Liberia Enterprise Development Fund has worked with CGI to promote business ventures and entrepreneurship in the West Africa country.

There are political and policy agreements as well. And in the wake of his controversial comments, Johnson was forced to reiterate those.

"My comments today were referring to Barack Obama's time spent as a community organizer, and nothing else. Any other suggestion is simply irresponsible and incorrect," said Johnson in an email statement. "When Hillary Clinton was in her twenties she worked to provide protections for abused and battered children and helped ensure that children with disabilities could attend public school. That results oriented leadership -- even as a young person -- is the reason I am supporting Hillary Clinton."

In a statement about Johnson, Obama spokesman Bill Burton said, "His tortured explanation doesn't hold up against his original statement. And it's troubling that neither the campaign nor Senator Clinton -- who was there as the remark was made - is willing to condemn it as they did when another prominent supporter recently said a similar thing."

Good for Johnson. It is despicable the way Obama is using made up charges of "racisim" to try and scare or manipulate African-Americans, in a meager play for their votes.

Obama could care less about his own people other then getting them to vote for him. On the other hand, the Clinton's been helping Blacks and other minorities for years. Obama is using the race card, Clinton is using the experience.electability card. The latter is far more honorable.

Actually, I think it is telling that Johnson is obviously trying to sink Obama. He's afraid of him and afraid that there is no way that he would be able to get influence in an Obama administration. So he's playing his race card and throwing an elbow Obama's way. The Clinton campaign should immediately and forcefully distance herself from him. He is playing a clever game and her campaign should be able to see through it and protect themselves -- unless they like this sort of thing.

One of the biggest arguments against an HRC presidency is just this kind of thing, plus the rerun of "them." Incidentally, if HRC is interested in integrity she should immediately distance herself from such comments. Something like: "I appreciate his support. I disagree with him on many issues and he knows that I do. I also disagree that any allusion to youthful behavior has no part in my campaign."

If I was from the DNC, and I was paying attention to the negative interplay between the various factions in the Democratic Party, I'd be nervous.

As polarized as the various groups are, I don't see Democrats coming together to support the nominated candidate anymore than I see the Republicans unifying behind a single candidate.

There is too much bad blood between the camps and the Democratic Party is edging towards an internecine war.

If a third party emerges to pick up the voters who are alienated by the nominating process, I wouldn't count on a Democrat in the White House.

Now that we have descended into the Race and Sex mud pit ... there is no reconciliation moment for the Democrats in the future.

Does anyone really believe that there can be a Clinton/Obama or Obama/Clinton ticket now? I don't think so.

Hillary was never presidential material in the first place. She has the charisma of a wet mop and makes John Kerry look like a vibrant personality.

Politics is not about trotting out laundry lists of market-tested and triangulated positions but about inspiring people. Hillary couldn't inspire your dog to jump up after a long day alone in the apartment.

Hillary's toast. Deal with it.

The GOP would never use Obama's admitted drug use and lack of experience against him in the general election! OF COURSE NOT!

Everyone in America loves his special story! He's the perfect candidate; no record, and with a race baiting fire-wall that protects him from real criticism. (Watch out, you could be labeled a racist if you cross him!)

Ahhh, the great uniter candidate!

Personally, in my opinion as a proud American; Obama will be convergence of the racial divide that prolonged decades and decades of despondence.

Obama as the next President of the United States will be the triggering point of global enhancing of American Image. So be it! Shining start..

Go Obama.. American wishes are with you!

Here's a good question: "Will Hillary Clinton give more hand-outs to blacks than Obama". To me that seems to be the case she's really trying to make. That she will assure the black community that she will continue the time honored practice of buying the black vote and that Obama can't be trusted to do that.

Isn't that what is really happening here? I think so.

The Clintons are taking a calculated risk knowing they have lost much of the black vote already.

The idea is to disenfranchise voters, drive a wedge between us democrats, and keep us away from the polls.

Hillary says she's about change, while she votes middle right to innoculate herself against attacks from Fox News. How long will that have to go on before she feels its safe to show some backbone?
