Johnson

Robert L. Johnson, the billionaire founder of Black Entertainment Television, injected himself into the middle of a flaring campaign controversy on Sunday. During an appearance with Sen. Hillary Clinton, he seemingly raised the specter of Sen. Barack Obama's youthful drug use.

Speaking to a crowd in Columbia, South Carolina, the African-American business tycoon chastised Obama for a memo his campaign put together documenting instances in which Clinton or her surrogates made allegedly racially-insensitive statements.

"I am frankly insulted," Johnson declared, "that the Obama campaign would imply that we are so stupid that we would think Hillary and Bill Clinton, who have been deeply and emotionally involved in black issues since Barack Obama was doing something in the neighborhood - and I won't say what he was doing, but he said it in the book - when they have been involved."

The comment was greeted with ire by the Obama campaign. In the past, Clinton surrogates have raised the drug issue. Hours later, Johnson claimed he was simply referring to Obama's work as a community organizer.

The episode illustrated just how charged the Democratic primary has grown in the wake of Obama's victory in the Iowa caucuses and Clinton's win in the subsequent New Hampshire primary. It also threatens to bring wider scrutiny to Johnson's political activism, which is highly controversial in Democratic circles.

To be sure, Johnson is a major figure within the black community, a key voting bloc in the upcoming South Carolina primary. He also has been a big-time contributor to Democratic causes and candidates. According to the Center for Responsive Politics, he's offered up more than $1.5 million in donations since 1992; with $4,600 going to Clinton on March 6, 2007 and $2,100 to Obama on May 31, 2006.

But, over the past few years, Johnson has waged political battles that put him drastically at odds with Clinton, the candidate he now supports.

Johnson served on President George Bush's commission on privatizing social security. In January 2005, he convened a summit whose stated purpose was to raise and answer questions about the African American community's political affiliations, but whose true design, critics claim, was to peal black voters away from the Democratic Party.

He has repeatedly called for the repeal of the estate tax, saying that the policy is propagated by "a liberal, noblesse oblige attitude that they have probably had in their families for generations."

He even called Republican Alabama Senator Jeff Sessions to express his concerns on the issue.

There are certainly issues that bind Johnson and Clinton. One of those is Johnson's service as a member of Bill Clinton's Global Initiative in 2006.

In addition, Johnson's Liberia Enterprise Development Fund has worked with CGI to promote business ventures and entrepreneurship in the West Africa country.

There are political and policy agreements as well. And in the wake of his controversial comments, Johnson was forced to reiterate those.

"My comments today were referring to Barack Obama's time spent as a community organizer, and nothing else. Any other suggestion is simply irresponsible and incorrect," said Johnson in an email statement. "When Hillary Clinton was in her twenties she worked to provide protections for abused and battered children and helped ensure that children with disabilities could attend public school. That results oriented leadership -- even as a young person -- is the reason I am supporting Hillary Clinton."

In a statement about Johnson, Obama spokesman Bill Burton said, "His tortured explanation doesn't hold up against his original statement. And it's troubling that neither the campaign nor Senator Clinton -- who was there as the remark was made - is willing to condemn it as they did when another prominent supporter recently said a similar thing."

Today on Meet the Press Hillary confirmed for us what her detractors were saying all along: She is a real bee-otch!!!

In a speech tonight Michelle Obama twisted the "fairy tale" comment for political gain:

***Greeted by a standing ovation when she took the stage at the opening of the Trumpet Awards — an event celebrating black achievement — she went on to criticize anyone who would "dismiss this moment as an illusion, a fairy tale" in an obvious reference to comments made by Bill Clinton, the spouse of her husband's main rival for the Democratic presidential nomination, who used the term "fairy tale" to refer to Obama's characterization of his position on the Iraq war.***

The tide is turning, Obama is rising, Hilary is fading. The voters are finally starting to realize that Hilary is poison. Sen Claire McCaskill (D-MO) today endorsed Barack Obama and said Hillary is "fatal" to the Democratic party.

The Clintons need to bow out gracefully and let the country move on.

The Clintons are PROUD Supporters of that age old soft paternalistic racism of the Democratic party. The poor black man must be a democrat and must come to the White democrats for hand outs because they so suffer from having been slaves.
Vote for a democrat, keep the hand-outs flowing to the blacks. How do democrats judge themselves? On how much money they give black people!

If you think that Dr. King's dream was restricted to the Civil Rights Act of 1965, then you might need to take another look at the man you THOUGHT you knew. You can't summarize the great Reverend in a nutshell like that.

Gut instincts tell me that many of these Clinton bashing posts are being written by clandestine Republicans pretending to be blacks who are following the slime your opponent tactics of previous campaigns. There seems to be so much more Clinton bashing-hatred that is way out of line. My other hunch is that a lot of this venom-filled anti Hillary Hatred is coming from men who are angered a powerful woman would even attempt to run for president... and some male-identified females who fall into the "jealousy category".

Ahh, see, Hillary at Church. I thought you atheists progressives hated people who say they are Christian and go to church.

I guess you figure Hillary is just lying to get votes from stupid people so it's ok for a democrat? Ok to PANDER to the SUPERSTITIOUS?

Now that's what I call leadership. Why she's every bit as black as Bill Cliton. She could be the nations second black president!

The Clintons keep saying the MLK comment was taken out of context and mediamatters.org is reporting that newspaper articles are being misleading because they are not quoting her entire statement. But does it really make a difference?

She didn't make those comments in a vacuum like some random musing on civil rights history. It was her response in the back and forth w/ Obama about her being a doer and Obama just being a talker.

She is saying her way (LBJ in her example) is better than Obama's (MLK) and, in that context, she is diminishing MLK. I don't believe that was her intent or her feelings on MLK. She just needed a quick comeback to Obama's very good response to her "don't raise false hopes" argument and didn't think it through.

Having said that, I really don't like the way she's explaining/handling it now.

I would be more impressed with Obama and his campaign if he was not turning out to be so thin skinned. If Obama becomes the Democratic candidate; does he plan to complain to, and request from the Republicans not to use the race card, but rather to be civil and work in the spirit of bipartisanship during the elections? Obama makes nice speeches for the pulpit but; if as he claims, he has enough experience I would have expected him to be inured to his opponents using the race card. Democrats do not need a fight over race or gender. The country needs somebody that will start repairing the crash-landing of a mess that the republicans have so far left in our country.

I saw as a bad omen that he got and accepted the endorsements from senator Kerry and the other fainthearted democratic senators. If he wins, I hope he does not follow their advice. Kerry had a good shot at winning, but instead of fighting like a cornered animal, the accusations and framing of the republicans, he chose instead to ride his sail boat, and worse in plain view, giving the repubs more ammunition to frame him as a weak flip flopper. What a disaster that election was for Democrats.

Obama needs to grow thicker-skinned if he plans to go through that Republican meat grinder. Clinton may not be the best candidate, but so far she is fighting

THE CLINTONS AND BOB JOHNSON NEED A BLACK REALITY CHECK

Unfortunately for Bob "All About the Money" Johnson, many African Americans feel and know he has insulted them for over 20 years with low quality stereotypical "Black" cable television programming. Before this former chief executive hustler of Black trash TV throws stones, he should know that many who expected better over the years realized that BET was an abbreviation for brain empty television.

Though he sold BET to Viacom ("The Man"), his legacy of disinformation and ignorance lives on in its continuing lack of substantive daily U.S. and global Black news or political coverage --- on a so-called Black oriented television network. Get real Bob, being Black is also about the content of YOUR character and deeds too.

Moreover, if Bob Johnson wants to be the last Black man standing on the Clinton political plantation, that's his right and choice. Just respect the fact and reality that the rest of us who are aware and informed prefer to be the ex-slaves moving forward with someone of real integrity and vision.

Someday before the end of 2008 or the 21st century, Hillary and Bill Clinton will realize that the vast majority of African Americans are definitely not naive, uninformed, shallow, dazzled, or just plain stupid.

When you operate and think from the paradigm of someone that believes they are entitled, dillusion usually follows. Blacks rarely dillude themselves about the motivations of White politicians (Liberal, Conservative or otherwise), regardless of what they want to believe about us.

With over 200 years of experience embedded in our consciousness, we have seen, overcome and moved past the likes of the Clintons before. We think and decide substantively like an American as well as a Black American, with little confliction in our convictions.

I don't think anyone should be advocating against voting. If anyone wants to send Hillary a message, vote for Cynthia McKinney, who is trying to raise funds to get on the ballot, I believe for the Green Party. Too many of the wrong people benefit when we don't vote at all.

Hillary Clinton and Bill Clinton are going to destroy the Democratic party. We will be divided in a few weeks. They are using bigotry to split the Democratic vote. The use this tactic before when Bill Clinton ran for president.
