Pro-Obama Flier Urges Republicans To Switch Parties To Block Clinton

A campaign flier created by a precinct captain for Sen. Barack Obama urges Nevada Republicans and independents to switch party affiliations "for a day" and caucus in the Democratic primary in order to defeat Sen. Hillary Clinton.

The flier, which was distributed in the Reno area, calls on voters to support Obama "if you think a Democrat will win in November and you don't want Hilary [sic]." It criticized Clinton for having "voted for the war when it was popular," and for taking "money from the special interest groups." Her nomination, the piece concluded, "will continue to polarize the country."

The flier was put out by Bob Buchanan, a volunteer organizer for Obama in Reno. Buchanan, who insists that Obama's campaign had no connection to the literature, said he distributed approximately 100 copies of the flier before rewriting it, replacing criticism of Clinton with compliments of Obama.

"If you think a Democrat will win in November and you may have said anyone but Hillary, we would rather focus on Obama," the new version reads, according to Buchanan. "He spoke out against the war when it wasn't popular. He refuses to take money from special interest groups. He would unite rather than polarize the country."

According to Nevada state law, voters can switch party affiliations on the day of the primary to cast their ballots for candidates of another party.

"I want to get them to the polls," Buchanan told the Huffington Post, after confirming that the flier was legitimate. "See, right now you have a number of Republicans not happy with the Republican Party. And most people here are independents. So how do they vote? They might not know they can switch parties. This hopefully will get out the vote."

Buchanan says the decision to create the flier was his own. The Obama campaign, he said, refused to even read the two-page handout. Ben Labolt, spokesperson for Obama, also asserted that Buchanan was operating as an independent agent. "This is not a campaign document," Labolt said, "and our campaign had no knowledge of it before it surfaced in the media."

As for why he changed the tone, Buchanan remarked: "As I reflected on it. I said, 'you know this would not be reflective of Obama, this is not his campaign.'"

Update: Buchanan tells Salon that, in the wake of the backlash against his flier, he could be parting ways with the Obama campaign. "I may have to resign as precinct captain or something," he said. "I don't want to screw his campaign up."

I think the guy who reported this crap needs to get a real job. This is high school shit. Give me a break! Since when is it a crime to ask anybody for their vote. I was a precinct captain and believe me, I knocked on every door in the precinct and ask for every vote in the precinct. We had 15% of the republicans switch over and vote for us. Now I thought that was the whole idea of campaigning. We won by a 21% margin and were damn proud of it.

Who would the GOP rather run against? I say Obama! They don't want to run against Hillary as she is wise to their dirty tricks! I will vote for Hillary, as she is the only one who can beat the GOP!

Scary - but then Obama is funded by the wall street crowd , while calling non corporate Dims ' fuzzy headed liberals"( an early quote from one of his speeches) .
I think he sees the country club repug as his most obvious supporter.

The Obama campaign's true character is starting to show. He's been called "too nice to fight back," but he's clearly not too nice to fight dirty.

When I read these truly nasty comments about the Clintons, I have to believe that most of them come from republicans. As we all know, the Clintons were totally hated by the repeblicans, but has anybody really thought out why. It's not for moral purposes, or ethics or any other rhetorical theme the republicans use.We all know there just as bad or worse. It's because when the Reagen Revolution took over, the republicans won 3 straight presidential elections by landslides, and believed they were invincible. Then along came Bill. The machine was stopped in it's tracks for 2 straight elections. Now the venom is coming out again, because: They're baaack.

I am growing tired of both of these campaigns.

A pox on both their houses.

I respectfully submit that both of these candidates should withdraw for the good of the party and the election in Nov.

both have such glaring flaws and both are polarizing.

they should get out of the way and let wiser and more viable candidates prevail.

Even an edwards/biden ticket is more palatable than either of these two egomaniacs

"Buchanan tells Salon that, in the wake of the backlash against his flier, he could be parting ways with the Obama campaign."

WANNA BECOME AN OBAMACRAT?!!!
By Obama Florida 2008
Published: April 24, 2007

Tens of thousands of people in Florida are already supporting Barack Obama for president.

But, you know what? You won’t be able to vote for him in the all-important Florida Primary next February unless you are a registered Democrat, or unless you re-register as a Democrat.

See, Florida law mandates a “closed primary” for presidential primaries. Even if you’re an independent, these archaic laws will not let you vote in either major party primary.

Put another way — you have been legally disenfranchised.

That’s why “Democrat for a Day” was launched this spring by ObamaFlorida2008. Using the official forms provided by all Supervisors of Elections offices, you may re-register as a Democrat for that one day — when the primary is likely to be held — on February 5, 2008. You must do so before the end of 2007, to make sure it is done 30 days before the primary.

But this is not about some “hard sell” to recruit voters to become permanent Democrats. Not at all. After the primary, you may re-register back to the
Republican or Libertarian parties, or revert to your previous status as an Independent! There will be plenty of time before the general election in November 2008.

ObamaFlorida2008 recognizes and respects all citizens who have varying points of view. We just want to make it make it possible to vote for Barack Obama in the primary — or for that matter — anyone you wish.

Duval, Hillsbrough, Pinellas, Alachua, Leon, Volusia, Nassau, Clay, Okaloosa, Polk and St. Johns voters are already re-registering in the “Democrat for a Day” program.

And, from the standpoint of the Obama campaign, it is a win-win situation! For example, how many Republicans do you think will re-register to vote for our respected opponent Hillary Clinton? That’s right … virtually no one.

Don't forget McClurkin! Obama did not cut times with him despite his anti-gay rhetoric. I guess Hillary is responsible for everything her supporters say, but not Barack "The Uniter" Obama.

The media has been succefully muzzled, and now gives Hillary Clinton a free pass on her hateful rhetoric. It is a travesty to the honesty and open debate American voters need and deserve. How could you put clinton in white house when they are so desperate to be there by any means.

No dirty campaigning here, it's an appeal to voters. Obama is trying to attract Republican voters, what's new about this.

Why is this news that a politician is appealing to a group not tapped. This is stupid article, no news here.
